Mickey Rourke: Sean Penn A "Homophobe" And "Average" Actor

In a private text message obtained by The Daily Beast, Mickey Rourke bashes Sean Penn--his chief rival in the Oscar race--as a "homophobe" and an "average" actor.

Whistleblower has learned from several entertainment industry sources, that Mickey Rourke--whose extraordinary comeback performance in The Wrestler is garnering him early praise as a shoo-in for a best actor Oscar nomination--is trash talking his likely toughest competitor, Sean Penn, whose acting in Milk has earned rave reviews.

After his December 23 appearance on David Letterman, Rourke told someone backstage that he was surprised that so many people seemed to think that Penn was his Oscar competition since "I'm not even sure he'll get a nomination."

Poor Mickey. He is so pathetic. If he does get nominated he should enjoy it very much. I don't think they'll be knocking at his door with new scripts after that. Whatever he did to himself, is so awful. I remember him in 9 1/2 and he was very handsome. What happened? And as for Sean Penn, he is brilliant. No matter what Mickey says Sean Penn is not even in his league. I wonder if he is doing this just to get some attention. Good Luck to him, because the only part he would play would be "The Hunchback of Notredame" the movie.

I do not know who Penn's competition is. I checked his IMDB, and quite surprised, he'd been acting even before I was born. I 've seen Penn's movies many times. Great, great actor !

Ok - for 'what-his-name guy - oh yeah -- - - - Rourke, his IMDB list movies I already have. I played 3. Now, his face is familiar, but I really never bothered to even check his name. He played Billy in Once Upon A Time in Mexico with Banderas, and Johnny Depp. In between the lines of his bio, I sensed a belligerent person, he calls spade a spade. That's not exactly way of Hollywood, no wonder he gets those minor roles, but he gives life and memorable performances even with those minor roles.

'wonder how he get the lead of this critically acclaim role of a washed out wrestler. Someone may actually believed in him. But getting an Oscar for this role - uhmmm i don't know. He is not A-list. HW is always kiss behind culture.

Shame for this 'what's his name actor' . Oh yes, Rourke, Mickey Rourke.

Both Penn and Rourke have been around a long time. I think Penn is the better actor. He was great in "Mystic River."

So Sean Penn is a homophobe? Wow, he is an even more brilliant actor than I thought. I find it really hard to believe that gay director Gus Van Sant would hire a homophobe to play one of the most revered icons of the gay rights movement. Considering that I can't find one public statement from anyone, anywhere to support loony toon Rourke's opinion, could it be a case of sour grapes colliding with years of drugs, alcohol, boxing and bad plastic surgery? As far as that Oscar goes, anyone but Rourke as far as I am concerned. I walked out of "The Wrestler" less than 30 minutes into the film (which, admittedly, I was dragged to by a friend who made it all the way through but still can't figure out what all the fuss was about). Like almost everything Aronofsky does, it is wildly overrated. From what I saw, the movie is just a "super sized" episode of a bad VH1, E! or Bravo reality series given some measure of cred by that core audience of critics who go ga ga for any movie that makes you want to open a vein in a tub full of hot water.

I don't like Sean Penn's politics, but as an actor, I think he is one of the best.. Mickey Roarke couldn't act his way out of a paper bag.. I hope Sean does win the Academy Award.. Think of Sean in "I am Sam" and in "Carlito's Way". What a wide range. I doubt if Mickey could pull that off!!!

Penn who supposedly is a homophobe but is getting accolades for portraying a gay man.
Seems Penn comes out on top to me either way -- whether he loves or hates gay people.
