Mickey Rourke: Sean Penn A "Homophobe" And "Average" Actor

In a private text message obtained by The Daily Beast, Mickey Rourke bashes Sean Penn--his chief rival in the Oscar race--as a "homophobe" and an "average" actor.

Whistleblower has learned from several entertainment industry sources, that Mickey Rourke--whose extraordinary comeback performance in The Wrestler is garnering him early praise as a shoo-in for a best actor Oscar nomination--is trash talking his likely toughest competitor, Sean Penn, whose acting in Milk has earned rave reviews.

After his December 23 appearance on David Letterman, Rourke told someone backstage that he was surprised that so many people seemed to think that Penn was his Oscar competition since "I'm not even sure he'll get a nomination."

They are competing for the Golden Globe Best Actor Award. They are competing for Oscar Best Actor nominations. Trashing one's competition is a way to hold down votes for him. The fact that it doesn't work very well, doesn't stop some people from trying it. Read the article next time.

I did read the article, and am at a loss as to why you would think that I didn't. It's like you said, the fact that it doesn't work very well, etc.... In fact it doesn't work AT ALL as evidenced by all the comments here, which bring me right back to my initial statement. Mickey has nothing to gain by trashing his competition so there's a possibility that what he's saying is true. He is after all talking about a man who has a rather short fuse, and Rourke has more to lose than he has to gain from making these remarks.

You probably answered your own question here, but Hillary and Sarah and John and Barack and Joe lie because they have something to gain by doing so. Rourke on the other hand has absolutely nothing to gain. These remarks would not endear him to anyone, not the public, not the Academy. In view of this obvious hole in the sylogism, I can only assume that he spoke his mind with no ulterior motive.

Here's news from a movie producer's ex-girlfriend. Mickey Rourke has been offered the part of Berenger in the film adaptation of Eugene Inesco's "Rhinocéros". It's a remake of the 1973 film starring Gene Wilder as Berenger and Zero Mostel as Jean. Word from the street has it Sean Penn has been pegged to co-star as Jean. The targeted release date is 12-21-2012.

Penn did visit and show support for the Castro brothers and Chavez, who have persecuted gays in their own countries. He has written about how much he admired them.

Whether that affects your impression of him is up to you.

I will add two things: Cuba decriminalized homosexuality many years before most of the USA did. And, while it's no picnic to be gay in Cuba. It's a lot worse to be gay in Starke County, IN.

Second, Penn has good instincts; but, he doesn't have that necessary streak of obnoxiousness that one needs to be a good journalist. I believe what he write is accurate as far as it goes. And, it is far more accurate than the crap we're served up in our MSM. But, Penn often misses the "hard follow-up questions" that provide a fully rounded picture. For instance, he neglected to ask about the many, many Chavez family members in important government positions. I think he has 10 siblings, cousins, parents, etc in positions like regional governor. Also, Penn is first and foremost an artist. His emotions have primacy. because of this, he can be manipulated by a clever crook. Chavez is a clever crook. But, he is Valenzuela's duly elected clever crook and not our problem.

Also, perhaps investigating other political and economic systems is more important to him than gay rights, since we are obviously in economic trouble in this country. Granted, the Venezuela and Cuba have big problems and I cannot support their leaders. Still, Penn is obviously educated and open minded and I respect that.
