60 Minutes has a report that seems like science fiction: mind reading for real. Neuroscientists at Carnegie Mellon University used a computer and a functional MRI to read the mind of a CBS producer.

Will this help find out if those who voted for Bush 2x even had a brain?

If they scanned Bush's brain the computer would be speechless.

This will be an amazing advancement for people who have various disorders. It will be freeing if those who have no control over their bodies or voices can have a computer understand that they want to read a book, or eat something, or go outside. Amazing.

The machine is right, it is always right, so your are guilty - execute the command "Exterminate, Exterminate",....! Talk about an invasion of privacy - wow, brain hacking, mental waterboarding, don't get that MRI, somebody maybe listening! ha!

My Daughter has a degenerative genetic disorder, Episodic ataxia 2, which causes atrophy of the vermis. Communication and movement gets more difficult as years pass, she is 15 now. I hope developments like this may help her communicate in the future.

Kudos to all Scientists...

This must seem very promising for you and your daughter. I hope it continues to advance and becomes useful for her and others.

I can think of many applications for this. Especially in brain injuries and disorders. Perhaps even autism.

I second the kudos to science!

this is the scariest thing i have ever seen. i hope i die way before this technology is perfected. if anyone knew what i was thinking half the time...sometimes i fear god can read my thoughts and that's almost too much.

Megan Frank has really hot brains.

Scary stuff. Scary as in:

"Lie Detectors are very reliable and we'll tell you if you are a liar or not"

or

"God reads your mind and will punish/reward you as he sees fit due to your thoughts"

Lie Detectors and g*d are full of shift. We KNOW that. It's 2008, remember? Both of them are useless (useless and yet VERY dangerous TOOLS), except for the brain dead who insist it/they work despite NO evidence.

Same goes for this. I'd be very skeptical. Prove it. I can see many flaws in this TINY, made for the brain dead masses, TV clip. We shall see. Prove it and I'll believe.

I would love it if they could do this to Bush. Would the computer blow up unable to read a single thought?

I could say it's frightening, but I will reserve judgement to see what medical or surgical benefits can arise from this technology.

Otherwise, Big Brother OWNS you.

Medical or surgical benefits from reading someone's mind? Can't think of any....unless the person is thinking of committing suicide or killing someone...but we all know how fallible "Minority Report" turned out to be....this is just plain creepy.

Or people who have brain disorders that affect movement areas, like the cerebellum. My Daughter has such a disorder. Atrophy because of a genetic mutation is robbing her ability to put words together and get them out...
