Rod Blagojevich's choice to fill Barack Obama's Senate seat, Roland Burris, helped raise money for the governor on multiple occasions.

Blagojevich's choice is already being met with a steep wave of skepticism, because the embattled Illinois Governor was caught by the feds allegedly trying to auction off the seat to the highest bidder. Burris' ties to Blagojevich, despite his recent criticisms of the governor, seem destined to tarnish his appointment even further.

The former Illinois Attorney General gave $4,500 to Blagojevich's campaign fund in the form of personal donations and donations from -- what appear to be -- him and his wife, according to Illinois State records. The most recent donation came on June 27, 2008, when the governor was knee-deep in charges of ethical misconduct.

Burris also attended high-end Blagojevich fundraisers on at least three separate occasions, according to a review of newspaper filings by the Huffington Post. Most recently, in July 2008, he was in a crowd of 1,000 at the Chicago's River East Art Center when Blagojevich -- beset by ethics scandals -- hosted one of six events to raise money for his campaign fund (which had suffered because of mounting legal bills).

In April 2006, Burris hosted a 3,000 person event in the main hall of Chicago's Field Museum. That event saw Blagojevich soliciting donations of $1,000 for "sponsors" $2,500 for "patrons," $5,000 for "benefactors" and $10,000 for "co-chairs," according to the invitation.

In July 2005, Burris was one of more than 1,000 people who attended Blagojevich's annual political fund-raiser. That year, the governor -- who had defeated Burris in the gubernatorial primary just three years earlier -- raised a reported $4 million.

That Burris showed up at these events and donated to the governor's campaign would not, under normal circumstances, be remarkable. Neither is the extent of his own donations, which are relatively paltry by Illinois standards. After all, Democrats help fellow Democrats. But Blagojevich was mired in ethics complaints at the time of the latter fundraisers. Moreover, the governor stands accused of attempting to sell the Illinois Senate seat in a pay-for-play scheme. To achieve complete legitimacy, anyone appointed to take Obama's seat will need to have offered no financial help whatsoever to the governor.

Burris, as noted, has been a recent critic of Blagojevich, calling on the governor to relinquish his post in light of his recent arrest. But he wasn't always that much of a thorn in his side. In March 2006, as the Chicago Sun-Times was reporting on growing criticism of the governor's political tactics, the former A.G. was quoted as saying:

"I can't see how anyone can say he is not governing," Burris said. "I think he is doing a helluva job."

UPDATE: ArchPundit has more on the donations made from Burris to Blagojevich's campaign fund. In this case: more than $10,000 was donated from the former A.G.'s consulting and lobbying shop, Burris & Lebed, to the governor. The site also has a rundown on the state contracts that Burris' firm has received.

Burris, in his introductory press conference today, dismissed a question about the money he has raised and donated to Blagojevich, saying that the total figures seemed too high for his firm's budget.

If all he has done is raise money for Blago at the Field Museum, that is great for Chicago politics. I do not buy Harry's rationale that any appointee will be tainted because of Blago. So I guess Mosely-Braun is also tainted if she was appointed. It seems that Burris is a long time politician who is widely respected state-wide. Seems like a good choice. But then again, if this were NY, he is not a celebrity.

As a citizen of the great state of Illinois, I fully support the short-term appointment of Burris to finish Obama's term. Burris is a well-respected, long-term public servant of Illinois and, although it is a controversial move by Blagojevich, it is the Constitutional one. Remember, although there are ALLEGATIONS against Blagojevich, until he is tried in a court of law and found otherwise, he is innocent until proven guilty.

I agree. The news is much ado about nothing. Let's move on. There are many more issues that deserve the people's attention. Politics of distraction rears its ugly head.

Good post. I don't know much about Burris - but from what I hear - he seems to be a decent man (who is also not interested in running for re-election). The senate should be able to separate Blago from Burris - and judge Burris on his qualifications.

The only problem with that scenario is Harry the wimp already threw down the gauntlet. How is he going to back track without looking weaker than he is seen already?

You are absolutely right. Sam Stein's post (and most of his posts for that matter) are clearly biased. The dirty campaign against Blagoevich should be ignored. The main activity of ALL politicians in this country is to raise money from donors. That is how our political system works. Pretending to suddenly discover how awful that process is (which may be the case) is underhanded.

I said this in another post...the intention appointment was so suspect...blago pulled the race card and is allowing the AA politicians in IL to come to his aid (although Jesse White may not) in support of the appointment.

If Blago had appointed an equally qualified white man, everyone would be ahootin' and ahollerin' all about how tainted the appointment is. but since Burris is a black man, everyone is sooo afraid of calling the race card out on this one.

but let me say this: Jesse White claims he will not certify the appointment. Pres-Elect does not support the appointment either. Of course we all know politics is dirty...why it's called politics. But geez, blago was so blatently dirty about it. Unfortunately, Blago does not wield the kind of power or clout, nor does he have the teflon coating of Mayor Daley. This will stick, he will go down and will. Regrettably, Burris will be a casualty in this as well.

Blagojevich is stirring the pot because this might cause problems in the black community if Burris is replaced. This man is so arrogant and need to be replace immediately.

Every citizen has a right to give money to the candidate of their choice. Someone needs to be seated and everyone needs to chill out. I gave money to Obama , does that mean that he can never appoint me to a position in his cabinet?
This is just stupid.
Slow news cycle until Obama takes office.

Just watched Rachel Maddow's interview with Burris and I think it is a brilliant move by Blago. This guy (Blago) is truly a piece of work. The absolute perfect choice for him. A reasoned, dedicated, almost crystal clean former attorney general who knows the law and will fight this to the Supreme Court. And if Blago's pick is allowed to serve - what exactly is he guilty of?

Amazing.

no it won't, at least not in Illinois. It doen't mean that Burris shouldn't be seated but I don't think the AA community will rally around him. What, is he running for gov in 2010. Will he try to run for the Senate.

Blago's approval ratings in Illinois are 8%. To put that in perspective, Dubya is 4 times as popular as Blago is.

Burris is 71 years old for crying out loud. He has also been a long-term public servant for the state of Illinois. Trust me, it's not a power trip for this guy - this was a very SAFE appointment for Blagojevich.
