In this Thursday, Sept. 27, 2007 picture, Mychal Bell, one of the Jena Six, appears at a news conference after leaving LaSalle Parish Courthouse in Jena, La. Bell, 18, was arrested Christmas Eve and booked on a shoplifting charge, police said Monday, Dec. 29, 2008. He was freed on $1,300 bond following his arrest at a mall in Monroe, La. He also was booked on charges of resisting arrest and simple assault. (AP Photo/Kita Wright)

NEW ORLEANS — One of the central figures in the 2007 Jena Six civil rights case never gave up pursuing his football career, even after his well-publicized run-ins with the law.

Mychal Bell, an 18-year-old high school running back, clung to the hope that he could earn a college football scholarship. Then came another legal scrape this Christmas Eve.

After news broke of his arrest on a shoplifting charge, Bell shot himself in the chest Monday with a .22-caliber handgun. He remained hospitalized Tuesday but police said his chest wound was not life-threatening.

"When it was broadcast that he was charged with shoplifting he just felt that the whole year had been wasted and that he had worked all of that time for nothing," said Louis Scott, who represented Bell in the case where Bell and five other black teenagers were charged in the 2006 beating of a white classmate.

Bell's grandmother, Rosie Simmons, and mother, Melissa Bell, told police that "Mychal had made comments over the past two days that, because of the current media attention he had because of the shoplifting arrest, he didn't feel like he could live anymore," Monroe Police Lt. Jeff Harris said, reading from a police report.

Bell and the other members of the "Jena Six" once faced attempted murder charges in the beating at Jena High School, in north central Louisiana's Lasalle Parish. The charges for all the defendants were eventually reduced. But the severity of the original charges brought widespread criticism and eventually led more than 20,000 people to converge in September 2007 on the tiny town of Jena for a major civil rights march.

After being sentenced to 18 months following his guilty plea to juvenile charges, Bell moved from Jena to Monroe, where he was in foster care. He was released from state supervision on Dec. 4, said Bill Furlow, a spokesman for Reed Walters, the district attorney for LaSalle Parish.

A football star at Jena High until the Barker beating, Bell had hoped to play for Monroe's Carroll High School, where he is on track to graduate in the spring. But the Louisiana High School Athletic Association wouldn't grant him a fifth year of eligibility to play. Bell had spent 10 months in prison awaiting trial after his 2006 arrest in the beating case.

"He had kept his grades up and he had worked out the whole year even though he couldn't play. He had dealt with the fact that the state athletic association would not let him play high school ball," Bell's lawyer, Louis Scott said Tuesday.

It was unclear whether his dreams of a college football career were realistic. According to Scott, family members believed Bell was having encouraging discussions with the University of Louisiana-Monroe.

The school's director of football operations, Peter Martin, said in an e-mail that the school had not evaluated Bell as a prospective student-athlete and would not speculate on his potential at the college level.

Police said Bell's Christmas Eve arrest came after he allegedly tried to steal several shirts and a pair of jeans from a department store and fled when a security guard and off-duty police officer tried to detain him. After they found him hiding under a car, Bell "swung his arms wildly" and one of his elbows struck the security guard with a glancing blow, according to a police report. He was freed on $1,300 bond.

Scott said he believed the arrest likely resulted from a misunderstanding.

"I would be very surprised if he was shoplifting," Scott said. "I had seen him working out every day even though he knew he wasn't going to be able to play high school football."

Monday's shooting was reported at 7:40 p.m. According to the police report, Bell was staying at his grandmother's home and his mother was visiting at the time. Melissa Bell told police she and Simmons heard a gunshot coming from Mychal's room. They found him on his bed, wounded in the chest. It was not clear Tuesday who owned the gun.

Getting caught up in the Jena 6 affair may have not entirely been the young man's fault, but, if he was shoplifting, nobody made him. Still it's not time to give up. There is a long life ahead that can be good.

This is truly a tragedy. His family needs to get him out of that H.3ll hole and send him to a place more tolerant of people of color. He has too much to offer the world to allow the media and the popos to define him. My prayers are with him.

This is a tragedy, but it seems to me that Mychal has chosen this himself. No one forced him to go along with 5 other youths to beat another teenager. No one forced him to shoplift. When will society hold individuals accountable for their actions? After the beating and the subsequent reduced sentences, Mychal should have been celebrating that he got away with the crime of his life. That was his cue to turn his life around. He was placed in foster care and apparently was working out a lot so that he could perhaps be a college football player...so far so good. So what happened to make him think that shoplifting would be the answer? Sometimes there are people who are willing to change, and there are people who CANNOT change!

Why are rich celebrities arrested for shoplifting treated crying out for help?

If Mychal is to be held accountable for the assault, which he was, and for the shoplifting charge, which he may be held accountable, when will the people who assaulted him be held accountable at the same level? Is pointing a shotgun at someone assault with a deadly weapon? Attempted murder?

My prayers are for the REAL victim, the kid who was savagely beaten. It adds insult to injury I'm sure to see all the brain-dead nitwits praying for this delinquent.

Mivote, How about actually help him take personal responsibility for his action. Before it's too late. And you trying to let him off the hook does not improve his chances. On the contrary.

Thank you to all who posted positive messages about this boy's situation. After the Jena 6 event and all the media attention, did anyone stick around after to help him cope. Having already experience jail - he was scared. Who knows why he was shoplifting. The school denies an extra year to play when he sat in jail for a year? To take a gun and shoot yourself in the chest and not mortally wound yourself - is a HUGE cry for help. He did not want to die, he wanted someone to help him decide what he should do to move forward, maybe he needed to know he mattered!

good thoughts. i seriously hope that he gets the help he needs.

i'm sure that each and every person on this site has shoplifted at one point in our life, but it seems that this young man hasn't gotten the message...

Positive thoughts sometimes aren't enough, especially when those positive thoughts are unwelcomed. After all of the support that he and the other members of the infamous 'Jena 6' got, and after all of their sentences were reduced (let's not forget that this was 6 on 1) these boys should have thought about leading the noble path. But the actual problem that I see is that with the rallying of people behind the 'Jena 6', in which they got a lucky break, they may feel that they can do no wrong! They can go on committing other crimes and society will rally behind them once more. Looks like they learned absolutely nothing, and it is our fault for allowing them to do so.

didn't this kid have a long history of being in trouble with the law before the beating? i think this was partly the reason why such stiff charges were brought against him - a scared straight type of a deal.

hopefully he will learn...

No he didn't have a long history of trouble...the trouble was there that they expressed their equality. Read.

Yes, he did have a history of violence although most of the media kept that part of the story quiet in order to milk more coverage from the story.
Todd Lewan did an AP story on Bell and Jena back in Sept. of 2007. The story was titled, "Black, White, shades of gray in Jena." It's worth looking up.

Guys, face it; not every black kid who gets in trouble is misunderstood or a victim of racism. This kid was on probation for TWO violent crimes already when he and five other kids threw a kid to the ground and then stomped him until he needed emergency treatment. That's NOT a "schoolyard fight"; that's a mugging. Then he sits in jail in spite of the fact that PLENTY of money was donated and available to make his bail; Eric Clapton donated $10,000.00 himself. Mike sits in jail and meanwhile his mother is driving a new BMW. That's not white racism, that's Mom not caring. Then he thinks that because he can run with a football, he should have a different set of rules than the other kids; he should be allowed extra eligibilty. And THEN, when he KNOWS he's got to do right or else, he goes shoplifting for fancy clothes at the local mall. The kid obviously thinks being a football star makes him immune to the rules, and all calling him a victim does is reinforce that in his mind so his behavior doesn't change. Mike Bell's problem is Mike Bell, plain and simple.

I don't have any details on the circumstances. He also was an honor roll student.

What was the extent of the other person's injuries? People get taken to the Emergency Room as a precaution for a lot of reasons, including school yard fights.

What circumstances led up to the fight? What charges were filed against the White people involved?

No one is saying that an assault should go unpunished. We are saying that justice should not depend on skin color and that the punishment should fit the crime.

OK, you shoplift, you are caught, you pay the price. If you don't understand that, God help you, because it's unlikely that society can.

National radio personality, Michael Basiden, who spearheaded the charge to bring the "Jena Six" to the nation, and raised money to defend Bell, sounded very sad today reporting this story. The only thing Basiden and et al asked of Bell: "to make something positive of your life."

Bell just let THOUSANDS of people down! People across the country donated money to his defense and traveled to LA for the march.

He is a kid. He is a kid who has been subjected to all kinds of horrors. He didn't owe anything to you or anyone else. If you actually care about him, then keep him in your prayers.

maybe he shouldn't have been assaulting other people, or shoplifting, that'd probably left him with a slightly lower profile.

This young man is much too young to try and live his life as a symbol . He has been used as a symbol of oppression to blacks and of evil to whites. No wonder he cracked. He needs compassion and guidance , given the things he has tried to weather at such a young age.

Two million people a year are detained for shoplifting in the U.S a year.
400,000 of those actually face arrest charges becaiuse usually stores do not even call the police.
This is a misdeameanor - not worth attempting suicide over ,but the press is crucifying him.

Please is there not some kind strong older black man who can take him and set him right.?
He has been used and abused enough.

The poor child- what a life.
I kinda thought with all the pubicity maybe some organization might have helped him with college scholarship or some kind of life help.

So everyone, press, politicians etc descended on that town, did their outcry, and then did nothing to help? Knowing how upside down the lives must become?

why doesnt that surprise me?

Nothing in the article about how to help him.
If anyone knows of anything already set up I hope you post it here.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:05 PM on 12/30/2008

why on earth would somebody help him with a scholarship?? I've never assaulted anybody and I don't have people lining up to help me. Let's help those who deserve it.

Watch Slumdog Millionaire to get an idea how life is when all the cards are stacked against you. I'm not sure I wouldn't have done the same thing as this young man. In my experience, when people are in pain they often express it in unhealthy ways because they don't know that there is another way. Imagine how much pain you'd have to be in to shoot yourself. Blessings and healing for Mychal Bell.

In early 2006, former White House aide Claude Allen was arrested for an alleged return scam at a Target store in Gaithersburg, Maryland.

Jean Eaton, while mayor of Albert Lea, Minnesota, was accused of stealing hundreds of dollars worth of clothing from Marshall Field's .Eaton later reached a plea agreement with Olmsted County prosecutors to have the charges dropped,
