CHEYENNE, Wyo. — Yellowstone National Park was jostled by a host of small earthquakes for a third straight day Monday, and scientists watched closely to see whether the more than 250 tremors were a sign of something bigger to come. Swarms of small earthquakes happen frequently in Yellowstone, but it's very unusual for so many earthquakes to happen over several days, said Robert Smith, a professor of geophysics at the University of Utah.

"They're certainly not normal," Smith said. "We haven't had earthquakes in this energy or extent in many years."

Smith directs the Yellowstone Seismic Network, which operates seismic stations around the park. He said the quakes have ranged in strength from barely detectable to one of magnitude 3.8 that happened Saturday. A magnitude 4 quake is capable of producing moderate damage.

"This is an active volcanic and tectonic area, and these are the kinds of things we have to pay attention to," Smith said. "We might be seeing something precursory.

"Could it develop into a bigger fault or something related to hydrothermal activity? We don't know. That's what we're there to do, to monitor it for public safety."

The strongest of dozens of tremors Monday was a magnitude 3.3 quake shortly after noon. All the quakes were centered beneath the northwest end of Yellowstone Lake.

A park ranger based at the north end of the lake reported feeling nine quakes over a 24-hour period over the weekend, according to park spokeswoman Stacy Vallie. No damage was reported.

"There doesn't seem to be anything to be alarmed about," Vallie said.

Smith said it's difficult to say what might be causing the tremors. He pointed out that Yellowstone is the caldera of a volcano that last erupted 70,000 years ago.

He said Yellowstone remains very geologically active _ and its famous geysers and hot springs are a reminder that a pool of magma still exists five to 10 miles underground.

"That's just the surface manifestation of the enormous amount of heat that's being released through the system," he said.

Yellowstone has had significant earthquakes as well as minor ones in recent decades. In 1959, a magnitude 7.5 quake near Hebgen Lake just west of the park triggered a landslide that killed 28 people.

build grid around earth with cities, tourist attracttions. Stop making war with ourseleves over religious nonsense. start living in space, make it the next super resort. Check out mars, the moon other planets. We can do it if we focus our efforts, we have no choice if we want to continue the human species. Recent geological discoveries have shown how dangerous our planet really is. Any movie producers out there? I think it would make a great subject for a movie.

Given what we know about human history, I would postulate that exerting such effort to "continue the human species" is not justified. Nature may be better off without us.

We're definitely going to have to expand civilization into the solar system and beyond if there's to be any hope for long term survival. Provided we do it before some disaster strikes.

It will take some genetic and/or biomechanical changes to the human form. We're just not built for low (or very high) gravity, exposure to high linear energy transfer radiation, etc.

What irony. If the supervolcano blows, millions of Americans will be fleeing to Mexico, only to be turned back just as the Mexicans were when they were looking for a better life!

i've been saying the ancient people weren't as stupid as everyone wants to think.there were things that are out of man's control that will destroy our planet,it's all natural ,and cleanses itself and then starts over again is the cycle, and were very close to that cleansing cycle, and 2012 is it .I've known about 2012 for years it's amazing people are just finding out about it.

I don't know if ancient people were as stupid as "everyone wants to think" but I'm pretty sure they weren't as stupid as the modern people who believe in these ridiculuous predictions for 2012. What's amazing is that there are actually modern people dumb enough to buy anything.

The problem with people like you ,is thinking humans are so superior therefore nothing like this will happen, but the planet doesn't take orders from us.

As much as it comforts you to think that nature works on a schedule based on a calendar invented by a primate species with a freakishly over developed frontal lobe that marks time from the virgin birth of the flesh incarnate son of their God and his subsequent execution and resurrection from the dead, the fact is that all is random and our insignificance is only exceeded by our colossal conceit, our complete self delusion and a truly frightening imagination..
In uncertain times apocalyptic psychosis increases. The Yellowstone super volcano may well erupt on an apparent 600,000 year cycle but that has nothing to do with anything but the amount of time it takes for sufficient geological stress to build. Relax. We still have a huge inclination and plenty of opprotunity to off ourselves if chaos doesn't get us first.
By the way, it's 640,000 years since the eruption.
Don't worry, Be happy.

2012 is more far-fetched than Y2K. It's the last day of the Mayan calendar that is based on the wobble of the earth for which each cycle lasts about 26,000 years. December 21, 2012 right? Do you think it's a coincidence that that's the winter solstice? It's just Mayan astrology.

This is not a Mayan only thing ,their are predictions from 3 different ancient peoples who had no cummunicating with each other and didn't know about each other, and the all came to 2012 ,very interesting,so I have a feeling something will happen before or around 2012 with the planet is in charge not us !

It's not really as funny as some of you want to make it. But I guess childish comments is what you can expect from people who have been fed lies by the Bush administration for 8 years. For more on the Yellowstone Supervolcano, visit this:
http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence/supervolcano/supervolcano.html
and,
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supervolcano_(docudrama)
Very educational.
And whether or not the volcano will go off in 2012 (debatable) is discussed here:

Oh, and if you think you're going to be safe from the effects? Read Carl Sagan's original Nuclear Winter essay here: http://www.cooperativeindividualism.org/sagan_nuclear_winter.html

I don't think people are being funny about this at all.... but if you know that there is nothing you can do about an impending eruption it won't serve to run about like your hair is on fire...

The people on this site haven't believed the lies told by the Bush Administration. And being high-and-mighty isn't going to help you face the Maker. I mean, honestly! Everyone handles threats in a different way. If I want to laugh in the face of danger, how is it your business to tell me no???

Greetings from ground zero. Bozeman Montana here. Life expectancy after the main eruption, several minutes maybe. Next symptom to watch for is elevation changes within the caldera. They have been monitoring a bulge on the bottom of Yellowstone lake for a couple of years now. This Quake swarm was localized near the north west end of the lake, well within the caldera. The university of Utahs online quake monitoring website has gone offline. Anybody know why?i was gonna check to see if the swarms were continuing.
If she goes quick I'll do a little the play by play until the house melts but then I'm checking out. Don't like the idea of breathing microscopic ground glass and those full death casts from Pompey give me the creeps.
If it blows ash for a few days I'm heading north by north west.
But I'll probably end up going to work Monday after my vacation ends and immediately start breaking my New Years resolution to stop eating the office donuts. Sigh.

Hey, Bozeman - I read about the bulge about 5 years ago, and am a big fan of Discovery and NetGeo channels. I find Earth Science fascinating, no matter what happens. I tell you what, I think I'd prefer a quick death in a geothermal blast to a long painful one in a nuclear winter/ice age, so am considering moving closer to the action!!

And it shall be a great day at the time of my coming, for all nations shall tremble. But before that great day shall come, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon be turned into blood; and the stars shall refuse their shining, and some shall fall, and great destructions await the wicked. ................
............... Sounds like a volcanic eruption to me?

A natural disaster would certainly get in the way of all the plans which our mad-men Bush/Cheney/accomplices have for us as they will soon involve the US (openly) in the Israeli-Palestinian war.
All of the intellectualizing and manipulation of man-made disasters/killing/wars to build empire can not rival those of nature to wham us.
We will never learn to get along in peace, conserving and living wisely, for nature will deal us, as a people, enough crises to test all our strength and all resources.

For those of you who are grossly uninformed the Yellowstone Caldera which is from 50 to 70 miles wide is a Super Volcano which if it erupts would disseminate the United States and cause most likely a "nuclear winter" or mini ice age that has never been seen during record time...

There are two cycles to be concerned with one 70,000 years the other approximately 160,000 years...

I'll try and illustrate, anthropologists found prehistoric rhinos from the era of one of these Super Massive eruptions 1,500 miles away from the "hot spot" of Yellowstone buried under 50 feet of ash...!

That's 50 feet deep of ash 1,500 miles away from the eruption...

Earthquakes are the precursor of eruptions we have learned in recent years, and an eruption of Yellowstone will destroy directly at least 2/3rds of the U.S. mainland...

I have banged away at times at our government from the Pentagon as well as Homeland Security and FEMA directly as to what our plan if any is in the event of a Yellowstone Super eruption...?

Apparently there is none but in the lite of this if these eruptions are larger than the usual ground tremors measured there frequently we had better recall our National Guard and as many forces as possible from these stupid expeditions in Iraq and such and prepare for the worst disaster in recorded history...

The alignment in December of 2012 may trigger our demise due to Yellowstone erupting..

America's Achilles heel..!

It would "disseminate" the United States? I suppose it would spread a fair bit of it about, in a literal way...

We've known about this for a long time here in Jackson Hole, Wyoming as we are only about 60 miles south of the south edge of the caldera. We would be some of the first to go. Just the concussion of the event would be enough to wipe all life out in our area, let alone the smoke and ash.
