I Like ItI Don’t Like It

The Wall Street Journal reports that former Attorney General Alberto Gonzales is writing a book:

Alberto Gonzales, who has kept a low profile since resigning as attorney general nearly 16 months ago, said he is writing a book to set the record straight about his controversial tenure as a senior official in the Bush administration.

In his interview with the paper, the disgraced appointee expressed frustration that "for some reason, I am portrayed as the one who is evil in formulating policies that people disagree with."

"I consider myself a casualty, one of the many casualties of the war on terror," he added.

Apparently, the book's publication has already hit a few snags.

Mr. Gonzales, 53 years old, doesn't have a publisher for his book. He said he is writing it if only "for my sons, so at least they know the story."

The chapters on the Bush administration's surveillance program, which involved eavesdropping without court warrants, and other controversial aspects of his work, remain blank. That is in part because he remains under investigation regarding allegations of political meddling at the Justice Department.

Another reason he might be writing the book: he can't find a job. Gonzales has had trouble getting employment since resigning from the Justice Department. In July, he suddenly began appearing in D.C. again after months of absence -- leading the Washington Post to speculate that he had landed a gig. Read more about Gonzales here. is there any way to re-name ALL such (possible) books: "IF I DID IT: the so-and-so story"...

If Alberto Gonzales tells all he knows, the book should be less than 2 pages.

This guy was awful.

Not as bad as Janet Reno, but still awful.

Please go away, sir.

Certainly Reno had her flaws, but you must be joking to suggest she was worse than Gonzales. On what basis do you make the remark? As part of the Bush Administration he facilitated torture, illegal wiretapping and the politicization of the Justice Department, all grievous and systematic violations of the law. Your observation reminds me of Chris Wallace saying it was unfair to Bush to compare him to Nixon. In fact, Bush makes Nixon look like a Boy Scout.

Reno's biggest crime was her complicity in the fire-bombing of the Branch Davidians compound in Texas. She either condoned it or turned a blind eye and deaf ear to it.

*In his interview with the paper, the disgraced appointee expressed frustration that "for some reason, I am portrayed as the one who is evil in formulating policies that people disagree with."*

For some reason? He's not serious, is he? Violating the Constitution, shredding the Bill of Rights, and he is trying to portray himself as a victim of bad press? I would say I'm tired of these whiny criminals against humanity and wish they would go away, but I would rather see them on trial.

Let's put him on Federal welfare; and pay for a nice cell for him with meals and public shower facilities.

This book would be found in the fiction section? A tell all book by a cretin who is constitutionally incapable of being honest about anything, um, let's see, perhaps it will need to be in the comedy section.

I hope the publisher actually reads the book before shilling out the dough.

If it is anything longer than "I don't recall", he could be prosecuted for lying to Congress.

More likely it will be a pamphlet entitled "I Don't Recall"

Excuse me if this has been said already, but Gonzo's book ought to be short, given that he cannot remember anything. I think his wife sews his name in his underwear, in case he forgets it.

"I consider myself a casualty, one of the many casualties of the war on terror."

Nice guy, asking for the world to think of him as being no different than our young men and women killed in this "war", or the Iraqi babies who were Bush's "collateral damage".

If there is a pathetic irony in this administration it has to be Alberto Gonzales. He thought that if he did the president's bidding with unwavering zeal, unscrupulous dedication, and ruthless amorality he would have a lock on being named to the Supremes by GWB in his second term. Instead he is an unemployed book hustler trying to blackmail GWB into a pardon.

"...an unemployed book hustler trying to blackmail GWB into a pardon."

Your analysis is spot-on! If Gonzo really wanted to write the book, there'd have been a fairly detailed outline (if not a first draft) being circulated among the publishers and they would be bidding on it.

Because he isn't in that position, and because he claimed under oath to have no recollection of, well, his entire freakin' tenure as WHC and AG and so can't tell much without putting himself in jeopardy of prosecution, he's likely bluffing about actually wanting to write the book.

But can Chîmpy take that chance?

I wonder if he can find a publisher willing to print a 400 page book with 350 blank pages and 50 pages of fiction.

"I consider myself a casualty, one of the many casualties of the war on terror." -- Former Attorney Generalissimo Alberto Gonzales.

That, my friends, is the new classic definition of "chutzpah." It replaces both "d*mp on someone's front stoop and then ringing the doorbell to demand toilet paper" and "m*rdering your parents and then claiming you're entitled to mercy because you're an orphan."
