Recession-wary Americans embraced the virtues of thrift this Christmas, with stores reporting a clear rise in the popularity of piggy banks.

"We have been selling coin banks really well," said Laura Kellner at Kikkerland Design Inc. in New York City, whose stylish chrome pig is priced at $31.

U.S. savings levels have increased markedly in recent months as households adjust to a yearlong recession and the worst financial crisis since the Great Depression.

Yeah, well, things are booming in my neighborhood. Just took a bike ride down the street with my son and we found two $5 bills just lying in the street with tire tracks on them. Of course, we also found a nearly empty bottle of rum, a champagne cork, three beer cans, and a red plastic cup. There's probably a complete story here.
We're putting the $10 in his savings box from Wells Fargo ~ he's been saving money to open his own account since his class took a tour of the bank last month. No pricey piggy bank necessary.

I live 8 miles from 2 casinos. They are always sending coupons so I've been going and getting the cash when I run my errands. The amount varies - this week it will be $70.

The economic disaster was caused by the Fed's manipulation of interest rates and money supply. There is no painless way out of the mess. Massively pumping money into the economy will only prolong the agony. We should let wall street and the troubled banks fail, otherwise we are rewarding failure. Borrowing from China to bail out poorly run banks, companies, and the rich only debases our currency, punishing the poor and the innocent.

Right you are, but be assured that the financial junkies are set upon a "stimulus".... but be of good cheer, as eventually, the more and more monopoly money is printed up, more and more fixes will be required...and then the junkie will either either die or go crazy... its called "bottoming out" or "Depression".

The only way to get out of this depression-like economy which is, right now, in a death spiral, is to relieve the average wage earner of their fears that they are not going to lose their jobs or if they do, the government will find them a job quickly. But I dare say the economists and the Southern Senators have never heard of John Maynard Keynes.

No. They have and they hate him.

They long for the days of Victoriana and the Edwardians, where the rest of us were dirt under their feet and they lived like royalty.

The Chicago Boys policies can give them back the old days. And they are destroying the US for that pipe dream.

This probably is a better investment than Wall Street.

$31 for a bank??? Really?? you could stick that $31 in an envelope or in a sock in your sock drawer. Spending $31 on a chrome piggy bank is NOT being frugal. NOT spending money on a piggy bank IS being frugal.

waste of money. i have been known to use a plastic bag, jar, tin and currently a plant pot. I'm more than frugal, I'm cheap.

My spare coins always end up in a rinsed-out spaghetti sauce jar,...

I don't get it either.

Shop at Goodwill. Most of the stuff is junk, but you can find at least some decent things from time to time and at killer prices.
