CAIRO, Egypt — Somali pirates seized an Egyptian cargo ship and its 28 crewmembers on Thursday while a Malaysian military helicopter saved an Indian tanker from being hijacked in the new year's first attacks by pirates in the dangerous Gulf of Aden. Fifteen armed pirates snatched the Egyptian vessel, called Blue Star, after the ship exited the Red Sea and entered the gulf, carrying a cargo of 6,000 tons of fertilizer, according to Egyptian Deputy Foreign minister, Ahmed Rizq.

The pirates then steered the ship toward the coast of Somalia, Rizq said.

He said contacts were under way with "international and regional parties" to get the ship released _ which likely meant there were attempts to negotiate with the pirates.

In the other attack Thursday, a Malaysian military helicopter saved an Indian tanker carrying a full load of oil when it was attacked by two skiffs, one of which carried seven pirates dressed in military-style uniforms, said Noel Choong of the International Maritime Bureau's piracy reporting center.

"They came close to the ship and started firing machine guns, hitting the bridge and the accommodation area," Choong told The Associated Press. The pirates, believed to be Somalis, tried to board the vessel several times while "firing repeatedly" but failed, he said.

The captain increased the ship's speed to maximum, made evasive maneuvers and sent an SOS, which was received by a Malaysian frigate, KD Sri Inderah Sakti, 15 nautical miles away, he said.

The frigate sent a light military helicopter, which arrived within minutes, and the pirates stopped firing and fled, said Choong.

There were no injuries to the crew but the tanker sustained some damage, Choong said, adding that if the Malaysians hadn't arrived the tanker "would have been certainly hijacked."

It was not clear how far apart in distance and timing the attacks on the Egyptian and Indian vessels took place. The Indian tanker had been heading into the Red Sea toward the Suez Canal when attacked.

The attacks come as more countries are sending warships to join a multinational naval force to protect commercial vessels passing through one of the world's most important sea routes. Another Egyptian ship was saved on Christmas Day by a German helicopter in a similar fashion as the Indian vessel Thursday.

The Malaysians, who are part of the multinational task force, also saved a Chinese ship less than two weeks ago.

Cmdr. Jane Campbell, a spokeswoman for the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet in Bahrain, said the Indian vessel used measures recommended by the multinational force _ including evasive maneuvering and sending a distress signal.

"It seems the very appearance of a helicopter finally caused the pirates to abort their attack," Campbell said. She added that details of seizure of the Eyptian ship were not immediately known.

"But it does appear to have been a very active day for the pirates in the Gulf of Aden," Campbell told The AP.

More than a dozen warships are now patrolling the vast waterway between the shores of Yemen and Somalia. Countries as diverse as Britain, India, Iran, the United States, China, France and Germany have naval forces in the waters.

According to the International Maritime Bureau, pirates attacked 111 times in the Gulf of Aden in 2008, successfully hijacking 42 ships. Of those, 14 ships are still in the hands of pirates with more than 240 hostages, Choong said.

The pirates have been given a free hand to operate because of more than a decade of turmoil in Somalia. The nation of about 8 million people has not had a functioning government since warlords overthrew a dictator in 1991 and then turned on each other.

I don't think that they will ever get their own "Pirates of Somalia" ride at Disneyland.

Am I the only one that cheers for the pirates?

The international community has been looting Africa for over 400 years and now that the Africans want to loot them everyone's in an uproar?

Africa has been looted for everything from gold to diamonds to cobalt to plants to animals to PEOPLE. The Arabs, the Europeans, the Americans, the Turkish, the Indian, the Christians, the Muslims, etc.

The looting of the sovereign fisheries continues to this day, not to mention all of the unfair contracts used to exploit mineral rights (like treaties w/ the American Indians). So now they've decide they're tired of being bent over and the want to do some bending - I'll keep cheering for them.

Reminds me of Mugabe nationalizing the lands of white farm owners who monopolized Zimbabwe's land since colonial days, while his the people lived on scraps (although I certainly can't defend most of his other actions). As long as they don't turn into murderers, I'm on the side of Robin Hood.

Well hold on a minute there. I dont think you'll find anyone who will disagree with you that Africa has (and in many ways still is) been looted by all the mentioned parties but to substiantiate the acts of PIRACY simply as a means of balancing the "equation" doesnt help anything either.

And youre also saying that because they are "tired of being bent over and they want to do some bending" that that is the reason they conduct piracy?? You dont think that maybe they do what they do because their country is in complete anarchy? You think they do what they do out of a sort of quasi-revenge for the past injustices done to Africa? Wake up! Their doing it because they think they can get away with it and make a quick buck. Simple as that.

They are absolutely...POSITIVELY...not Robin Hoods in ANY way. You think that twenty or so pirates who steal a multi-million dollar oil tanker, and who miraculously get their ransom, will distribute the spoils with the people???? HAHAHAHAHA wake up! They do what they do because its 1.) easy and 2.) profitable. If those idiots saw an AFRICAN tanker they would do just the same

I didn't say it was out of revenge and frankly I don't care. World history shows that people won't lay down and take poverty and exploitation forever, look at the French revolution, the American revolution. How do you think England characterized the perpetrators of The Boston Tea Party? Yet in America they are considered heroes - is this any different?

It doesn't matter which country, which "race" of people, which political and economic philosophy or which religion is practiced - people will not lay down and take poverty forever. Not when rich people are all around them ignoring their condition.

You, like most others, refuse to see things from their vantage point - so you call them pirates and criminals and "idiots". Typical. Like I said - I'm cheering for Robin Hood and the reporting shows that's exactly what they are....

Treat them like the pirates they are place enough armed men aboard merchent ships to fire on,sink ,and kill all vessels who approach, take no prisoners. Once the word gets out among thieves, the high jacking will stop.

Yes, Africa has been looted. However, much of the looting was allowed by the patriarchal system that exists on the entire continent. During colonial times they didn't have a choice so I'll grant Africa that. You can't have a civilized society if warlords continue fighting for thousands of years and females are rap*ed, pillaged and thrown away like trash. When will there ever be a generation of success?

exactly. They need to start helping themselves (i.e. stopping their idiotic warlord wars, raping women, PIRACY) before anything can be done. Idiots keep expecting the West to bail them out. I, as an American, would be more than willing to support this but not before they cut the crap they do everyday in their backward society.

You wouldnt repaint a house if it were on fire would you?

My first suggestion is stop relying on western media to tell you about Africa. With 53 countries in Africa, none of them have a higher crime rate per capita than the U.S. or U.K. Most people naively think both countries are safer and they are wrong.

http://www.nationmaster.com/graph/cri_tot_cri_percap-crime-total-crimes-per-capita

http://www.nationmaster.com/cat/cri-crime

There's a greater variety of news about the U.S. - celebrities, holidays, elections, economy, sports, movies, parks and zoos, traffic accidents, weather, hi-tech gadgets, etc. All the media focus on Africa is negative - at least 95% of it.

Don't believe the lies, everything they taught us about Africa is a lie. Talk to people who've actually been there or people who are from there. Not saying you can go anywhere, anytime, but I wouldn't suggest that you hang around Forsythe, GA at night either.

As far as the answer to your question, it depends where you are talking about, you can't lump all 53 countries into one - there are stable countries w/ long standing generational success like Gabon, there are countries like Namibia that are peaceful, but have only been independent since 1992 and then there are countries like Rwanda.

Look at country like Namibia - the Caucasian leftovers from Germany's colonial rule make up 5% of the population - but own 50% of the land. This type of inequality is prevalent all over the continent and leads to pirating and instability.

AFP is reporting today that the French Navy captured 8 Somali pirates who were attempting to take the Panamanian-flagged cargo ship S. Venus.

The French were heading for the Somali coast to hand them over to "the authorities," according to Navy Captain Christophe Prazuck, spokesman for France's general staff. The pirates had their 2 watercraft and 7 weapons confiscated. That will sure teach them a lesson.

Wait. If the "authorities" they are handed over to are collaborating with the pirates, this may not be so effective. If the justice system isn't working properly, or if the jail is full, couldn't these same pirates be back out at sea tomorrow, trying the same thing, as long as the boss who gave them their other boats and weapons can come up with new ones ?

I'll have to wait and see what happens with that. When food and clothes are shipped over there from large countries, war*lords take what they want and let the rest rot on the dock knowing there are starving people.

If I was writing a novel I'd have an unmarked aircraft launch a laser guided missile in to that ship full of fertilizer (remember the Oklahoma City bombing?) and the big boom would slow the piracy game down for awhile . Of course no one would claim responsibility for the explosion and the collateral damage would be horrendous but they it's only a novel.

The issue of Piracy in the east coast of Africa cannot be stopped without addressing the root course.
In the past 20 years Greek/South Korean and Japanese Fishing Trawlers have been illegally over- fishing in the western and eastern coast of Africa.

These countries do not have powerful navies to ensure that international maritime boundaries are respected as a result coastal towns and villages along the coast of east and west especially have become ghost towns their traditional livelihood for centuries have disappeared right before their eyes due to illegal fishing. China and India should use their navies to ensure that their citizens do not fish illegally in the waters of other countries or even in international waters without proper control.

The pirate in somalia are ex-fishermen who have lose their traditional means of substinance due to these illegal activities. This is happening all over fishing communities in africa

What's a fisherman to do? C'mon!!!! Thats the most idiotic thing I have ever heard. They have plenty of fish there and big ones too!!! This is about tribal power not fish. We were there, they didn't like us and were not friendly, we left. (Thanks Bill) Let the U.N. earn their keep on this one and let the U.S. sit it out. We need some quiet time anyway.

you don't think that your average run of the mill Somali Pirate makes bunches of money do you? The big money goes to the big bosses..end them end piracy. The eye in the sky can see the big new homes being built with the ransom money.

All it would take to stop this is letting ships register a 50mm machine gun on the top of their ship and allow them to hire 5 armed security. The pirates are hijacking these ships with 9mm pistols, plastic cheaply made ak-47's and small homemade explosives. They are just easy targets because they are not allowed to be armed. These ships were not taken at such a high rate when they used to allow just 2 armed security on each ship because the pirates knew there was a risk boarding the ship. It is a simple situation.

One of the problems with the weaponry available to the Somalis is that a lot of it is good Soviet-era weapons and ordinance left over from when Somilia was a Soviet client state. These weapons are designed to withstand much abuse and neglect and still work, and to be operated by someone with a 3-rd grade education.

We are going to be dealing with the fall of the Soviet Union and Iraq, which allowed gazillions of weapons loose on the world, for a long time. Whatever happened to those suitcase nukes, anyway?
