I Like ItI Don’t Like It

With the death of 115-year-old Maria de Jesus on Friday, 114-year-old American Gertrude Baines has become the world's oldest person.

Ms. Baines voted for Barack Obama in November, saying "the Republicans want everything for themselves." When asked why she was voting for Obama, whose name she struggled to pronounce, Ms. Baines said "'cause he's for the colored people." When someone else asked if she'd ever imagined a black man as president she said "I sure didn't."

"So I'm glad I'm here. I don't care if I live a hundred more," she said, laughing. "I ain't done nothing but eating and sleeping."

She also decided to remove a photograph of George and Laura Bush from her wall.

It's hard to imagine being born before automobiles or roads to drive them on, before the Wright brothers flew, when telephones were just invented, before women could vote, before the world blew up during WWi. She survived the Great Depression the New Deal, she saw this country rise to greatness, the development of the great industrial age and National Parks, and buildings grow tall - then taller, the atomic bomb and aircraft carriers, and probably cried when the Titanic fell to an iceberg. She saw typewriters turn to computers, then stenographers replaced by tape recorders, she saw the beginnings of refrigeration - and microwaves replace toaster overs (which were also invented during her lifetime). She's seen bank failures and credit cards take over from a trip to the bank and she's seen the hell of WW11, Korea, Vietnam and Iraq. She's seen the invention of synthetic fibers for clothes which she used to iron with the old black iron heated on a black stove - now she doesn't need to iron her clothes. She's seen the growth of the movie industry and obscene salaries paid to athletes and movie stars. And don't get me started on all the modern computer gadgets. She must have some amazing memories and I'm so proud that she had the wisdom to vote in this historic time after seeing the trouble of the segregation years and the hippie era.

May your god bless you my dear lady!!

The interesting thing is that, as incredible as it is to realize how far we've come in the past century, the next few decades are going to bring vastly greater changes.

ummm,

Centuries = 100 years

3 centuries = 300 years

She's lived in 1 century + an additional 14 years.

1895-1995 = 1 century

1995-2009 = 14 years

Sorry, had to straighten that out, but it's great to see that this little old lady has even lived this LONG, WOW. I hope I look like her when I get to be her age!

I think OBAMAthePRESIDENT means Ms. Baines has lived in 3 centuries because:

1895-1899 =19th century

1900-1999 = 20th century

2000-2009 = 21st century

Amazing to think that at the time she was born she wouldn't have been allowed to vote due to her race AND her gender. Looking at how far we've come in the last century sure does help put today's struggles into perspective.

But you know the tro//s are coming to condemn her for just voting for Obama because he's black. As if she hasn't earned the right to do just that. Born in 1894???

Of course, for 200 years white people voted for white people because they were white, for the last 100 men have voted for men because they were men, so the argument is just silly!
