I Like ItI Don’t Like It

10 year-old student journalist Damon Weaver has already talked with "My Homeboy" Joe Biden, but with the gift of inaugural tickets from his congressman and $8,000 in donations sending him to DC, he hopes to interview Barack Obama and is continuing his media push to help his cause.

He's made a pitch video, included in the clip below, and went on MSNBC Friday with his teacher to talk about why he wants to talk to the President Elect.

Asked his feelings about Obama, Weaver said, "I'm very excited because he's the first black African-American president in the history for America."

He added that his fellow students in Florida want him to land the interview and are "very excited to see the first black president in the chair."

Give it a break. There are lots of young people who would appreciate the opportunity to interview President Elect Obama. Right now, the media hype would be a circus and there are far more pressing concerns than this.

He probably would have had a better chance, if it hadn't become so public. I don't know if this is about him or the teacher. hmmm...maybe he should have asked to interview the kids.

It's the media pressing Obama in many ways they would not have considered appropriate to pressure a white President.

I am a African American female and a mother. I can't help but be slightly irriatated by this. Obama is being put on the spot and I think this is being used to Damon and his teacher's advantage. Who wouldn't want to interview Obama? Why is this kid any different from any other kid out there? Why does he deserve this special priveledge? There are so many people who would also be well deserving of such an opportunity. It's not like there was a national contest to win a chance to interview Obama. What's next, "I to spend the night at the White House Mr. Obama please?" Give me a break.

Take a step back!!!! I think this kid is great regardless of ANY intentions on the part of the instructor. I watched him interview Joe Bidden. He deserves a try for the gold ring. By the way as an AA mother aren't you proud of the intelligence, positivity, and poise of this young man?

Don't be so quick to put things down. You NEVER know when your kid will have an opportunity to reach his/her dream and you'd want support

Sorry to play the odd woman out. I love kids. I have 3 of my own including one who is the same age as Damon. However, I think Damon has been horrible wtih the interviews he has held so far. No special talent there. I agree with those who think it is time to end this circus. Most 10 year olds are more articulate than he is. He really needs to go back to school and concentrate on improving his grades and communication skills before looking for a big time interview. First things first, please.

I have to agree with you CNFK. I applaud the child for wanting to do interview the president elect, and asking. but there are others behind this push and constant media hype over it. Like I said in an earlier post, my daughter says she would love to interview Obama or his wife or daughters for her school paper which she works on, and she , like Damon, is intelligent too. In fact, she is in the gifted program and excels in languages and math, wins awards and more. Im very proud of her, as i am my other 2 daughters. ( one of which is gifted with math and sciences, and the youngest has not been tested yet) But does that mean that I would plaster them on every and any media outlet that will promote them? No. I wouldnt let a teacher do it either. If she wants to , I would support her, but she would be doing the interviews on her own, and no teacher would be there to answer for her or interrupt to take the lime light away from the her. Like I saw what this teacher doing on more than on occasion on more than one media outlet over the last week. I feel sorry for Damon because it appears that he is being used for others gain.

My daughter wants to interview Obama too. Can I get TV and media time to shill my cute daughter and see if I can get support for an Obama interview? Please, I can understand him asking , I can understand him getting a little coverage, but this is a little out of control. I dont know if its the media looking for anything to fill the 24 hour news time, or his teacher, who is on tv with him trying to get into the lime light, but enough is enough. Damon, your a great kid, and you have great admissions , but dont let others push you for their own gain. I am sure you will get some kind of media deal out of this, and you and your teacher will have your 15 minutes of fame turned into 30 days , ending in disappointment when your canceled because your no longer news. That is just life. You will be used for profit and gain by others, and dropped the minute they can squeeze anymore out of you. Do this yourself, dont let your teacher or others handle you like they have been. You can do this for yourself, not for others.

Maybe we need to look at it in a more positive way. So when his 15 min or 30 days are over he can set a new goal.
Remember excellence is not an event, is a behavior.

Great job Deamon. My congratulations to the teacher and everyone supporting Deamon. That is what this country needs more of, encouragement to our young kids to reach their dreams.

You can tell his teacher is very confident of his student.

I saw him and his teacher on one of the news programs the other day. Someone should slap the teacher for using this kid to try and increase his popularity and begging Obama to come talk to a poor black child. Its really pathetic what I saw. I can understand asking once or even twice in letters, phone call, email, ect.. but when he pushes this kid on a media campaign, you know there are other motives going on here. Why dont we all take a kid and do the same thing ? You think Obama would talk to each of us and we can use it to further our careers or popularity?

How can you accuse a this teacher of trying to increase his popularity?......all his is doing is helping an very smart curious kid become probably a great journalist one day. And what is wrong for going ofter the one person you want to interview.....that is real journalism. Both the teacher and the student are to be commended for setting an example to children all over about going after what you want.
The idea you have of "other motives going on here" only speaks of the way you live your life...I mean you are probably the kind of person who does everything with an ulterior motive and therefore you think everyone acts the same way........or maybe you are just jealous that a 10 year old kid is brighter and more driven that you are.....what ever the case might be you are pretty sad!!!!!

Its easy, he is. the kid has great ambition, but is only one of thousands who want to do the same. He is being promoted by the teacher. I dont have a problem with Damon asking for an interview. I have a problem with his teacher doing the talk show circuit with him.

I think its pretty sad you try to judge me without knowing anything about me. I wont even justify your comment as its just asinine.

Go Damon!!! You have the intellectual curiosity and support to make it happen! Much success!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:01 PM on 01/03/2009

There's no there there. What does the kid want to know? To ask a question you need a question which means you need intellectual curiosity. I know this sounds cynical but being a 10 year old kid is not so unique that it merits you being rushed to the front of the press box.

Now if a meerkat came on television and expressed a desire to interview Obama that would be unique.

"To ask a question you need a question which means you need intellectual curiosity."

And your measure of his "intellectual curiosity" is... his age? Are you kidding me? There are plenty of young people who have more marbles than some adults I know. There is absolutely nothing wrong with his intellectual curiosity to me. Perhaps there is something else you're looking at that gives you that impression, could it be...nah, I won't go there.

It seems pretty simple you know: he wants to interview Obama because he's curious about how he will function as the president of the most multi-cultural America ever; he's curious about what type of world it will be at the end of his presidency; he's curious about how it feels living in The White House (the most famous piece of architecture in the world), a building constructed with slave labor.

And if he were reading your post, I'm sure he'd wonder why you so clearly (and with example) stated that he does appear to be very bright, and that a meerkat (a F%@&IN Meerkat!) interviewing Obama would be more "unique" than a young, articulate, aspiring, intellectually curious TV reporter from Florida.

So now you want to use a ten and a seven- year- old? These girls deserve to be left alone.
