In a statement released Friday, Gov. Sarah Palin called the birth of her first grandchild an "amazing, joyful blessing," but noted that, "When Bristol and Levi first told us the shocking news that she was pregnant, to be honest, we all at first looked at the situation with some fear and a bit of despair."

The statement from the Alaska governor's office came almost a week after the birth of Tripp Johnston on December 27, and was prompted by "the high volume of press inquiries, along with some erroneous information that was published," according to Gov. Palin's communications director.

Also in the release, the governor's daughter, Bristol Palin, is quoted saying she "obviously discourages" teen pregnancy and that "Teenagers need to prevent pregnancy to begin with - this isn't ideal. But I'm fortunate to have a supportive family which is dealing with this together."

Governor Sarah Palin Welcomes Her First Grandchild

Governor Sarah Palin has welcomed her first grandchild, Tripp Easton Mitchell Johnston, born to Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston on December 27.

"We are over the moon with the arrival of this healthy, beautiful baby," Governor Palin said. "The road ahead for this young couple will not be easy, but nothing worthwhile is ever easy. Bristol and Levi are committed to accomplish what millions of other young parents have accomplished, to provide a loving and secure environment for their child. They are both hard workers, they're very strong, and have faith they've made the right decision in setting aside their own interests to make this child their highest priority."

Palin added, "When Bristol and Levi first told us the shocking news that she was pregnant, to be honest, we all at first looked at the situation with some fear and a bit of despair. Isn't it just like God to turn those circumstances into such an amazing, joyful blessing when you ask Him to help you through?"

Bristol Palin said she "obviously discourages" teen pregnancy and knows that plans she previously made for herself will now forever be changed. "Teenagers need to prevent pregnancy to begin with - this isn't ideal. But I'm fortunate to have a supportive family which is dealing with this together. Tripp is so perfectly precious; we love him with all our hearts. I can't imagine life without him now."

Bristol begins her final semester of high school next week where she'll get her last credit needed to graduate. She looks forward to continuing her record of good grades and high achievement. Levi is continuing his online high school work in addition to working as an electrical apprentice on the North Slope.

Bill McAllister, the governor's office communications director, adds: "The governor's office previously declined to comment to honor the family's wishes that the event remain as private as possible. However, the high volume of press inquiries, along with some erroneous information that was published, prompted the governor to make a statement."

I just registered on this site so I could comment about articles and read what "The other side" is up to and how they think.............................WOW! Most of the comments are unbelievably ill cincieved and irrational. Let me list a couple of categories.:

1) "Prosecution" of Bush et al over "Lies to get us into war". Get over it...........it ain't gonna happen. If
anyone wants to put money on that, I'll take all bets PERIOD....just let me know.

2) Sarah Palin.........Hmmmmm, better get over that one too. She will be a force to recon with in future GOP politics. Once all you lefties get a gutfull of Pres. Obama I think you'll be ready for a change in 2010. And you can take that to the bank.

Cheers all!

Sarah Palin has made a mockery of the Republican party. She will never be a contender in 2010. However, you did give readers a good laugh. Why don't you watch her on SNL again.

Bristol says "Teenagers need to prevent pregnancy to begin with - this isn't ideal.",

Unfortunately thanks to her mother, the other safe, smart and intelligent methods of preventing pregnancies are not taught in Alaska schools.

Sarah, listen to your daughter, many families don't have the financial means or support that yours does, which is great for you. But the ones that don't will become a burden to your state, unless your christian values don't allow for that either.

I am not a biblical scholar but I don't think Jesus wants baby's to go hungry and since when did feeding the poor become a burden to Jesus.

Of course they Sarah Palin and Bristol discourage Teen Pregnancies. They are in the "Abstinence Only" Program that has worked numerous times over and over again in helping young people not only get pregnant but pass on venereal diseases..

This is a program that says we will ignore our hormones be pure sexual beings and perhaps get carried away only once in a while..... Works every time !

It's sorta an open secret that they really encourage this behavior under the guise of "preventing" with abstinent only "education." All the states that lead in teen births are in the south. Seems to me an attempt to breed a class of soldoers for the American Empire, that is, to address the "Birth Derth." It's a way of creating an undemocratic Sparta.

Did you ever wonder why the Caroline Kennedy articles are hard to find today yet the bashing of Palin abounds? It is that shallowness of the left and of the Huffington Post.

Have none of you had a daughter, sister, niece, cousin, friend's child who got pregnant?

And do any of you live in a family where no teen pregnancy (or college pregnancy) happened?

Look at the pregnancy stats!!!

(And note - Bristol Palin has what lots of girls/women do not seem to have - a supportive family and - so far - a boyfriend who is staying the course with her!!!)

In the 1960's - the sexist comments about Sarah Palin & her family (including the ad hominen sniping about this teen pregnancy) would have properly been denounced.

Lots of girls/women (per Planned Parenthood's own comments are being shoved into the "antichoice" of abortion because of no emotional and/or economic support- or a lonely struggle as a single mom if the male abandons them -
But this teen couple has a chance to make it -

Their baby - no matter what - has an extended family to lean on!

And yet some readers cannot separate their political views from normal human kindness towards this teen couple and their child!!!

Go Tripp Johnston!!!

I noticed you have taken up Bushie's favorite Hobby as well... being a 'cheerleader'

Your enthusiasm is rather ' misguided and mis-placed'... ya think?
You are exhuberantly cheering for a little baby........try that in about 15 years from now.... after his Mom starts teaching him about abstinence.

Do your little cheer for Bristol Willow and Piper first.....
and stay away from the Koo-aid

The hypocrisy of the women is the problem, not her daugther's pregnancy. If my teen daughter were pregnant and wanted to have an abortion, Palin's very political stance would make that impossible. It's so nice that Bristol has an extended family that can help her nuture and provide for her child, and the $300,000 for pictures is a real step-up for a couple of 18 year-olds. However, that is not the reality for the average single teen-age girl.

If they are so supported, then why aren't they married yet? Where was the responsibility from children to adults? SP and the first dude are models of parenthood? Sure, these things happen, and when it happens to condescending, duplicitous, pious, "moral" leaders, it is the job of us regular folk to point out the hypocrisy.

How right you are. They will get married when they feel like it and when the time is right. My niece married the father of her baby when she was graduated college and she married the father of her baby. They now both teach school and have three children. It was a very long trying experience, but their marriage is solid. People that comment on celebrities kids are out of line. How wonderful that they did not kill their baby.

It's obvious that a lot of folks on this website don't like Sarah Palin, mainly because she is a Republican, and a conservative at that. You are entitled to your opinion, but it is a little disheartening to see the way it is expressed. I believe the sentiments expressed here are due more to ignor.ance of the persons commenting than any flaw that Mrs Palin or her family have.

I don't dislike Sarah Palin because she is a Republican. I'm surrounded by Republicans and many are likeable and I can accept their views. A lot of us dislike Sarah Palin because she is divisive and a hypocrite. She's everything that's wrong with the GOP and she is not fit to represent we the people. There are still some good Republicans out there, but she is not one of them. She's just a smug liar and an opportunist. Clearly not even fit to run her local Walmart. America has changed, and she hasn't changed with it.

Really? Well never fear, there's apparently still plenty of shills for Sarah like you ready to give her a free pass no matter what lies, hypocrisies and yes genuine ignorance she and her family spews in the public arena. "Judge not...lest YE be judged." Just expressin' it from the Good Word your type should have no problem with if you ever were able to genuinely live by it. Just a passage that Sarah and her joke of a family have finally met up with the reality of.

Not me. I don't like Sarah Palin because she is so stupid she ran for an office that she knows nothing about. Stupid isn't against the law, but it can be fixed, if one tries. She doesn't try, IMO.

It appears the stock market doesn't think your canidates are that intelligent either! Keep bashing Sarah, maybe you can blame Obama's mistakes on her, because the libs sure won't hold their guys accountable for ANYTHING.

Tsk Tsk Sarah.

You should have paid attention to your daughter.

Instead, now you're a grandmother.

The kid's name is "Tripp" - as in drug trip, acid trip, etc. The name is appropriate for such dysfunctional parents and grandparents.

Let's see if I have the message straight: "It's not ideal", but "I'm over the moon", "I can imagine life without him".

So, It's not ideal, but the message to teens is that having a baby will be the best thing that has ever happened to them. Huh?

There have been many comments on this post as to why we "progressives" are so critical of the Palin Clan.. In my 50 some years of life , I have never seen this country or this world so F..ed up.....Wars .. Economy.. Ethics... Ecology .. you name it we have problems.... Getting back to the Palins.. They are a release.. a Scap Goat .. A Catharsis for our vent up frustration..The main point here is they put themselves up for this social whipping.

I really don't care what the RushLovers say or call me. The RoveProjectionPolitics doesn't work anymore.
BOOMERANG! watching all the karma come home to roost is interesting, and I have every right to comment on it.
As to the Palins, you're right, if she'd just keep a low-pro and shut the yap, her lies might not be so glaringly obvious.
