Hamas's top leader warned Israel its army would be defeated if it invaded the Gaza Strip, while the United States said it envisioned a ceasefire with international monitoring that would ensure the Islamist group could not rearm.

Israeli armored forces remained poised on the Gaza border for a possible ground operation, a week after Israel launched devastating air strikes with the declared aim of ending rocket attacks on its southern towns.

Hamas are willing to sacrifice Gaza to achieve their goals. The destruction of Gaza would cause all of Israels enemies to rally against it. This is histories largest martyrdom operation, and most of the casualties will be unwitting pawns.

You may not be far wrong about Hamas' motives, but many Arab Nations will privately cheer if Hamas is defeated.

It would seem that city streets full of wreckage from buildings is not the best terraine for tanks. If the Palistinians have a way to incapacitate those tanks at close range....those tanks will indeed be doomed. By heavily bombing Stalingrad first, the Nazis turned it into a tank trap.....ultimately they themseves got wiped out...very few German troops came out of Stalingrad......percentage-wise.

This statement made my this Hamas leader reminds me of the statements made by Baghdad Bob during the Iraq War, purely delusional.

International monitoring would be the death knell for Israel. If the three stooges accept, they will be thrown out of office in February.

Do you think they care about international monitoring? How many UN resolutions have they ignored?

They do care though when it comes to their God, MONEY. Take that away from them and watch how

quickly things would change.

Israel should keep up the air assault and blockade. It will be effective, but they must have patience. Keep attacking until the missles stop. If they start again, then crank up the air attack.

If the above is not sarcasm, then you must absolutely love Obama (and Hillary - and ....)

Just guessing here.

Land invasion will play into the hands of Hamas...plus it is tuff to fight in the urban close quarters...Instead Israel should keep the pressure on hamas & engage Egypt to to crack on smuggling weapons to Hamas...
Gaza palestinians made big mistake to elect Hamas & now they are paying the price & bearing the pain Just like citizens in US elected Bush twice & paid the price & now bearing the pain ...In elections when citizens collectively engage in emotions to vote someone in office ..they will pay the price ...
On the west bank ..the palestinians are living better than in Gaza ...The choice is clear for the palestinians in gaza ..Kick the Hamas out & live better ...

my tax dollars are paying for this, an invasion which is doomed to failure and which will and has resulted in the deaths of hundreds of civilians, and only leads to tit for tat.

I think Iran is pulling the strings here. They supply Hamas with rockets that they fire on Isreal. Isreal fights back. Tensions rise along with the price of fuel. Gas prices here (northeast Ohio) have risen 15-39cents per gallon. What they couldn't do with production cuts, they did with this mess.

Listen up..........who supplies the weapons of te rr or to Is rahel? And how far is that country from Is rahel?> about 10,000 miles? Now who is the aggressor in tha t region? NOT IRAN because they haven't invaded or stole anyones land for CENTURIES.

In preparation: The New IDF Manual on How to Win the Battle and Lose a War (with a forward by George W. Bush, Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of the United States).

There will be eight-year olds in the streets battling tanks. Warsaw uprising, anyone?

Hamas would like nothing more than an Israeli ground invasion.

The whole operation has helped Hamas. We know that Israel "fell for it" because of political advantage to some in the February elections, but this might prove to be disastrous even for them, if there are significant Israeli casualties, or if a suicide bomber hits within Israel.
