If Senator Reid needs a primer on how this appointment process is supposed to work, he should ask Lisa Murkowski (R-AK).

Well, thank you Majority Leader for making Democrats look like bickering idiots after such a masterful campaign and election win by another Democrat.

Republicans are surely grateful for your help.

Keep up the masterfully crafted scandal of attacking a Democratic Governor because you didn't get your way with choosing one of the two you preferred. Where were these "strong-arm tactics" with Repubs for the past, oh, twelve years?

I guess you reserve it solely for Democrats, right Democratic Sen. Majority "Leader"?

This guy Burris is very weird. How one can jump in the middle of all this mess and expect to be seated. He is a very strange guy. what is the purpose of accepting an appointment from such controversial guy? I just don't get it.

What in the Constitution gives Reid, or the entire Senate, the option to not seat Burris because they don't like who appointed him?

We can all agree Blago is embarrassing but he is also a US citizen, therefore innocent until proven guilty, and he was within his [current] rights to appoint a replacement from his state to the US Senate, by my understanding of the law.

The senate can reject an election or appoint if they believe its tainted, especially by corruption.

Does anybody believe Blagojevich has the best interests of the people of Illinios after hearing what was going on behind closed doors?

Can some one please enlighten me about the criteria for electability?

You have to be Anglo, but too rich, and what else?

Correction: not too rich.

All that is equally true of Harry Reid, if not moreso. Both are US Senators by law.

Yeah, great point if you can explain how somebody is a senator before they're seated by the senate.

Burris should be seated. It's not in the best interest of the democrat party to bar him from the Senate.

Why do Democrats now support ignoring the US Constitution? Reid and the senate has no constitutional right to deny Burris his senate seat.

Article 1

Section 5.

Each House shall be the judge of the elections, returns and qualifications of its own members, and a majority of each shall constitute a quorum to do business; but a smaller number may adjourn from day to day, and may be authorized to compel the attendance of absent members, in such manner, and under such penalties as each House may provide.

I think by "elections" Section 5 refers to votes of the Senate. The election of members is covered in Sections 2-4.

Section 3
The Senate of the Unites States shall be composed of two Senators from each State, [chosen by the Legislature thereof,] for six Years; and each Senator shall have one Vote..
Amendment 17 affects the bracketed section, allowing state Governors and/or Legislatures to appoint replacements for irregularly-vacated US Senate seats, depending on the laws in the states. I'm not an expert on Illinois law and not inclined to become one, but the hearsay I have heard suggests that because Blago has not been removed from his office, the appointment of Burris is *perfectly* legal.

Section 4
The Times, places and Manner of holding Elections for Senators and Representatives, shall be prescribed in each State by the Legislature thereof; but the Congress may at any time by Law make or alter such Regulations, except as to the Places of chusing Senators.

Read Article l of your Constitution and get back to me.

Do you realize someone was once refused to be seated by the senate TWICE, once after being elected and again after being appointed.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:08 PM on 01/03/2009

Tainted elections. Reid has no legal basis or right not to arbitrarily seat senators as he sees fit. First, Blogo is convicted of nothing. So the senate can just arbitrarily not seat senators appointed by people they the senate don't like, really. Because the senate can assume what .....?

Army Manual Promotes Christianity to Combat Epidemic of Suicides

The U.S. Army’s suicide prevention manual advises military chaplains to promote “religiosity,” specifically Christianity, as a way to deter distraught soldiers from taking their own lives, according to an amended federal lawsuit filed last week against Secretary of Defense Robert Gates and the Department of Defense.
