WASHINGTON — Michelle Obama and her two daughters arrived Saturday in Washington, ahead of President-elect Barack Obama who was expected to make the trip the next day.

The Obamas arrived at their temporary home at the Hay-Adams Hotel, near the White House, on Saturday evening. Aides confirmed their arrival only after the Obamas checked into the hotel and declined to release any details. They had no public schedule.

The Obamas moved early so their daughters _ 7-year-old Sasha and 10-year-old Malia _ could start classes on Monday at the private Sidwell Friends School, an aide said. Other children of well-known politicians to attend the school include Al Gore III and Chelsea Clinton.

The Obamas are staying at the storied Hay-Adams because Blair House, the government's official guest residence, was booked solidly through Jan. 15, the Bush administration said. Blair House is located across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House and has previously housed presidents-elect before taking the oath of office. The Obamas will relocate there on Jan. 15 and stay until the inauguration on Jan. 20.

The Obamas returned to Chicago early Friday morning after a 12-day family vacation at a $9 million rental home in his native Hawaii. A day later, Michelle Obama and her daughters flew into the Washington area to take over their suite at the historic Hay-Adams.

The scene outside the hotel was quiet Saturday night, except for two news vans with accompanying crews hoping to get a shot of Michelle Obama and her daughters going in and out.

Security will intensify for Barack Obama's arrival on Sunday. The district's government is shutting down several streets near the hotel to traffic and there will be no street parking nearby from 1 a.m. Sunday morning until midnight on Jan. 15, according to its Web site.

Opened in 1928, the hotel sits across Lafayette Square from the White House, Obama's eventual work place and home. Its name comes from two historical figures who lived on the site: John Hay, the private assistant to President Abraham Lincoln and later secretary of state, and Henry Adams, an author and descendant of Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams.

The Hay-Adams has 145 rooms and suites, featuring marble bathrooms, intricately carved plaster ceilings and ornamental fireplaces and balconies _ with views of the White House, Lafayette Square and St. John's Church _ in certain rooms.

Room amenities include custom Italian bed linens and towels, goose down duvets and pillows (hypoallergenic pillows are available; Malia has allergies), plush microfiber bathrobes and slippers for adults and kids, Bose CD music systems with assorted CDs, exclusive Etro toiletries, complimentary Fiji bottled water and a nightly turndown service.

After throwing open its doors, the hotel quickly attracted prominent Washingtonians and other elites, including aviators Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart, author Sinclair Lewis and actress Ethel Barrymore. Its restaurant is a top destination for "power dining" and is a regular meeting place for White House officials.

I hate what America has opened itself up to....We have thrown away the rules...and have elected a foreign president...so, look out America...

You get what you pay for...You've got Obamaland now...

As Michelle said in one of her stump speeches..It will be like nothing you have ever seen before..or will ever see again...We are going to change the face of the world...

To ObamaNOT:
Were you raised with this bigotry and hatred, aka: "learned behavior", or did you get if from Fox News? Either way, it isn't good for your health. Life is way too short and hatred takes a lot of negative, draining, energy. May GOD bless you anyway, in JESUS' name.

It is my contention that in bringing change comes the change re being neighborly, kinder and gentler to the new neighbors called Obamas. Why the rush and skipping over of rituals that go along with moving in of new family? The dates are scheduled too close. The Old family should be out by Jan 15 of the welcoming for the NEW President, so that the house can be gone over, inventored and made custom move in ready for the OBAMA's. Who wants to move in on the same day of Celebrations of which the Bush family moves out? This is messed up.Let's have the change begin with being REAL. I am a nobody and I would prefer to have move in ready quarters. First of all it is not CONVENIENT. SAFE, or HEALTHY. nor following what I learned about the laws of OASHA. Let's get real and do the right thing. Let's make our living quarters for our New President move in ready, safe and sanitary , by ensuring readiness with a fresh rehearsed WELCOMING crew. We are proud of the Obama's.

MSNBC actually broke away and had this as "Breaking News." Must be a slow news day. The cable news stations must see their rating skyrocket whenever Obama is mentioned.

The photo editor has chosen a photo that is highly inappropriate, sadly not the first time. This particular photo makes Obama look fearful. His historical run for president and subsequent victory is a testament to his bravery. You can do better.

Obama's choice of Panetta and so many Clinton appointees from a generation ago makes his administration look like a leftover omelette. How do you squeeze change out of these old fogies? All they know is how to hold on to what they have. They are not going to provide any more innovation now than they did in their entire political careers. Obama voters have been had.

Who is more important than the Pres Elect who would be staying in Blair House? If they had any manners they would volunteer to leave and let the Pres Elect rightly stay there. Boy, leave it to Bush and his cronies.

Um Yeah! Tell the people to stay at the Hay's Hotel.
Why is that a problem?
Obama should get some preferential treatment here.

If I lived in DC, I'd protest and hackle the outside of the Blair House. Make the idiots who are staying there miserable.
Besides, whoever it is, shouldn't they have a conscience and say, we'll find other accommodations.

Quite a vacation? He's technically "between jobs" aka unemployed. I know you're eager for him to get started. ;-)

Bush took more vacation time than any president to date. O doesn't strike one as much of a lamper, this guy doesn't even own a proper place to summer. Focus ire where properly deserved.

You know, I think we just need to get used to these cynical, bitter types who have started their criticisms even before he takes office. The best thing to do is to ignore them. They will eventually spin themselves out. They are sore losers even in the face of pathetic alternatives from whom to choose and 8 years of consummate failure. Leave them be. Do not let it take away from the joy and hope we have and from our pride in a President who can think, talk, walk, and chew gum at the same time.

He campaigned all over the world (literally) for 2 full years, with a couple of 1 week breaks. He stops for 12 days, between assignments, to be with his family--while being briefed daily, and you begrudge him that!!! I don't think the American people want a president who can't stop from time to time and reenergize. Everybody needs that, it's what Camp David is for. Nixon was the closest to a president who wouldn't leave the Oval Office to chill (though even he did from time to time), and you see what happened with him. Lighten up.
