WASHINGTON — Michelle Obama and her two daughters arrived Saturday in Washington, ahead of President-elect Barack Obama who was expected to make the trip the next day.

The Obamas arrived at their temporary home at the Hay-Adams Hotel, near the White House, on Saturday evening. Aides confirmed their arrival only after the Obamas checked into the hotel and declined to release any details. They had no public schedule.

The Obamas moved early so their daughters _ 7-year-old Sasha and 10-year-old Malia _ could start classes on Monday at the private Sidwell Friends School, an aide said. Other children of well-known politicians to attend the school include Al Gore III and Chelsea Clinton.

The Obamas are staying at the storied Hay-Adams because Blair House, the government's official guest residence, was booked solidly through Jan. 15, the Bush administration said. Blair House is located across Pennsylvania Avenue from the White House and has previously housed presidents-elect before taking the oath of office. The Obamas will relocate there on Jan. 15 and stay until the inauguration on Jan. 20.

The Obamas returned to Chicago early Friday morning after a 12-day family vacation at a $9 million rental home in his native Hawaii. A day later, Michelle Obama and her daughters flew into the Washington area to take over their suite at the historic Hay-Adams.

The scene outside the hotel was quiet Saturday night, except for two news vans with accompanying crews hoping to get a shot of Michelle Obama and her daughters going in and out.

Security will intensify for Barack Obama's arrival on Sunday. The district's government is shutting down several streets near the hotel to traffic and there will be no street parking nearby from 1 a.m. Sunday morning until midnight on Jan. 15, according to its Web site.

Opened in 1928, the hotel sits across Lafayette Square from the White House, Obama's eventual work place and home. Its name comes from two historical figures who lived on the site: John Hay, the private assistant to President Abraham Lincoln and later secretary of state, and Henry Adams, an author and descendant of Presidents John Adams and John Quincy Adams.

The Hay-Adams has 145 rooms and suites, featuring marble bathrooms, intricately carved plaster ceilings and ornamental fireplaces and balconies _ with views of the White House, Lafayette Square and St. John's Church _ in certain rooms.

Room amenities include custom Italian bed linens and towels, goose down duvets and pillows (hypoallergenic pillows are available; Malia has allergies), plush microfiber bathrobes and slippers for adults and kids, Bose CD music systems with assorted CDs, exclusive Etro toiletries, complimentary Fiji bottled water and a nightly turndown service.

After throwing open its doors, the hotel quickly attracted prominent Washingtonians and other elites, including aviators Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart, author Sinclair Lewis and actress Ethel Barrymore. Its restaurant is a top destination for "power dining" and is a regular meeting place for White House officials.

So typical, the current Republican Prez preaches a good game about family values but can't handle it when the PE actually practices it.

Please no paparazzi following the children on the first day of school. Leave them alone. I don't want to see that.

I am sure that Blair House is not booked by any Bush relations and if they were they should have left for Crawford and let the Obamas settle in a bit earlier so the children could have been ready for school rather than have to stay at a hotel, no matter how luxurious it is. I hope some day someone would check and find out if it was really true that Blair House was not available. I wish the Obamas the best of everything and that they have a good life in the White House. If we all would work together the country will prosper once more and the mean years of Bush/Cheney would just fade into a distant bad memory.

That's ok. The Obamas handled it with class decorum - as expected. Maybe they will bring that back to the White House.

The Bush's made a big 'ole faux pas and created a hassle for the Obama's.

I think the girls will be just fine, given everything that will happen in the next few weeks, I doubt they really will completely *settle in* to school until the first week of February. And this way, they can pretend to be Eloise for a week or two. :)

Ah, the trolls are out big time today. They choose not to even comment on the fact that the Mom has gone to get her two girls situated in school the FIRST DAY so they can share the fun that kids that age have on that first day. YOu are so used to people like Palin, who take their kids out of school to use as political props. The Obamas seem to be exhibiting "traditional family values."--something neocons only PREACH about, but not ever practice (but it is ok for THEM). So, you turn green and angry at the BLACK FIRST FAMILY, who seems like a Norman Rockwelll picture.

So you choose to sneak in little snippets about Bill Richardson stepping down from Commerce Sec. You don't know what to think about someone who actually does the right thing in these circumstances. Your guys never step down--just arrogant and petulent like their boss, W.

Then you deride a freeze-frame of Obama's face that you think make him look scared. Maybe he has enough sense to be scared, unlike your Bushie-Boy, who only knows how to look petulent, arrogant, stubborn--or in the case of reading to the kids on 9/11/01--like he was in the deepest doo-dooo in his life (when all he thought he had to do was just ride around in AF 1 and act like a bigshot.)

I hope someone is keeping an eye out on the Blair House. I would really like to know who/what was booked there making it more important than the safety of our about to be first family. It's got to be a lot tougher guarding this family in a hotel than it would have been in the Blair House.

I still don't understand why the Obamas weren't able to move in. If the Blair House is known for keeping president elects there then why wasn't it reserved just for that for the month of January? Me thinks if a Republican was the president elect there wouldn't be a problem. Can't wait for little w to leave office.

I'm not a Bush defender, but it's customary for the Blair House to be used from around the 15th on. The Obamas have a little different need in wanting to be there to get their daughters started at the beginning of the winter school term, but they apparently didn't realize they needed to make arrangements so far in advance - but they haven't complained.

Maybe he was overwhelmed by the fact that he would be responsible for the 2010 Census. Thats a lot a work. I wanted him to be secretary of energy.

TheHankMan is AKA TheHankster. I think the hankster was banned. He will never say anything positive about PE Obama. Many on this site wanted Richardson as SOS, which I thought would have been a bad move for Richardson. I'm glad he dropped out because Secretary of Commerce would have been a very important position given the state of the economy. Richardson would have worked his butt off and he was ready for the challenge. All the positions are going to be a challenge given the state of the country. There are going to be many changes until PE Obama can get the right crew. It's not an easy job.
