CHICAGO — Just days before a high-stakes showdown in the nation's capital, the man selected to take President-elect Barack Obama's vacated U.S. Senate seat sought spiritual and political support on Sunday at a South Side Chicago church.

Warm words of support and prayers for Roland Burris contrasted with the frigid reactions from Senate leaders, many of whom say his appointment by embattled Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich is so badly stained that Burris shouldn't be seated when the new Congress convenes this week.

Burris took the stage at New Covenant Church on Sunday evening to a crescendo of drums, organ music and applause from hundreds of supporters, including black leaders and ministers.

"The appointment is legal," he said, thanking those gathered at the prayer service. "That is all there is. I don't know what all the confusion is about."

Before the service, Burris supporter U.S. Rep. Bobby Rush and about 60 ministers condemned Senate Democratic leaders for rejecting Burris.

Rush, a Chicago Democrat, called the Senate "the last bastion of plantation politics."

"We are just faced with a hard-headed room of people in the Senate who want to keep an African-American out of the Senate," Rush said.

The Senate's top two Democrats defended their right to deny the seat to Burris, while refusing to rule out a deal as Congress and its new members begin work this week.

Democrats say Burris' appointment is tainted because it was made by Blagojevich, who is accused by federal authorities of offering to sell the vacancy to the highest bidder. Burris, a former state attorney general, says the appointment is legal and the governor had the authority to do it. He has threatened to sue Senate Democrats if they refuse to swear him in as the chamber's only black member.

"Anything can happen," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev. But he described the chances of Burris joining the Senate as "very difficult."

The second-ranking Democrat, Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin, acknowledged that his governor has the state constitutional authority to fill the vacancy. "The Senate of the United States has the U.S. constitutional responsibility to decide if Mr. Burris was chosen in a proper manner and that is what we're going to do," Durbin said.

Burris said he is scheduled to meet with Durbin on Wednesday and possibly could meet with Reid the same day.

Obama has said he agrees with Senate Democrats. But Burris told AP Radio on Sunday that he feels support from Obama.

"He's gotten some advice from other individuals and its not correct advice," Burris said.

While the Burris furor dominated public discussion, Illinois lawmakers quietly continued work that could lead to Blagojevich being removed from office.

Members of the Illinois House impeachment committee reviewed a 54-page draft summary of the allegations against the Democratic governor. Lawmakers said the summary did not include any recommendations on whether Blagojevich should be impeached. That will come after the panel finishes its fact-finding _ perhaps by the middle of this week.

The impeachment committee hopes to learn Monday whether it will be given access to some of the federal government's recordings of Blagojevich. It also wants Burris to testify about his conversations with the governor that led to the Senate appointment.

Burris intended to depart for Washington on Monday.

Reid said he expected to meet with Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky on Monday evening in hopes "we can solve this issue on a bipartisan basis."

Democratic leaders, however, plan to afford Burris few, if any, privileges even if he were to come to the Capitol with the proper credentials. Senate officials have said a Democrat will object to Burris being duly sworn with the rest of his class Tuesday and will propose that his credentials be reviewed for a time by the Senate Rules Committee. That would give Burris the status of a senator-elect and buy some time as Democrats hope Blagojevich will be removed from office before the committee completes its investigation.

Also Sunday, Reid denied a published report that he told Blagojevich in early December that he opposed the appointments of Democratic Reps. Jesse Jackson Jr. and Danny Davis to the Senate seat out of fear they would lose the seat to a Republican in the 2010 general election. Reid also allegedly opposed Emil Jones, the powerful black leader of the Illinois Senate, on the same grounds.

"I didn't tell him who not to appoint. He's making all this up to divert attention," Reid said. "Anyone who suggests anything racial is part of the Blagojevich spin to take (attention) away from the corruption." The Chicago Sun-Times reported Saturday that in an early December call to the governor, Reid urged Blagojevich to appoint either Illinois Veterans Affairs chief Tammy Duckworth or Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan.

Reid appeared on NBC's "Meet the Press," while Durbin and McConnell were on "This Week" on ABC.

I have just watched a replay of Meet The Press. The Democratic leadership(Reid) is dishonest and weak. America deserves better.

Senator Reid does not have leadership qualities. He is to reactive instead of proactive. Please select a new majority leader and put Reid out of his misery.

Reid had given the GOP so much.

Does anyone think the GOP will return the favor?

Reid and Pelosis always pick the wrong fights. They should have had impeachment hearings but no they let all the wrong doers escape. They prefer to spend time on a man who is a place holder until the next Illinois elections, wherein the people of Illinois will elect someone to replace Burris, who at age 71 probably will not run. So please stop waisting time and get working of the f'ng economy and the environment. Who give a rats blank if this man is seated or not for the balance of this term?

You really need to get your facts straight before posting.

First, Reid & Pelosi (no "s" at the end) have nothing to do with impeaching Blagojevich. They're at the federal, not state, level.

Second, unless the Illinois House approves a special election, Burris will serve out the remainder of Obama's term. The next Illinois elections are in April, 2009 and the senate seat is not up for vote until 2010.

And, most Illinois residents (I am assuming you are not one) care, and don't want anyone Blagojevich appoints to represent our state.

Mjb5406, cbates is obviously referring to the fact that Reid and Pelosi did not push the impeachment of Bush and Co. Don't be condescending, especially when it appears to be you who has so little sense and so little ability to comprehend. And by the way, why have an election in Illinois when you obviously speak for the whole state: deal with this fact: Blago is the governor at this point and his appointment of Burris is legal, like it or not.

I don't live in your state (I used to), but I read The Trib on-line including comments in the threads. You do not speak for everyone in Illinois.

Reid is a Mormon from Nevada.. No doubt he has Republican friends in VERY high places, like the FBI and CIA. For a fascinating glimpse and history of Mormons,CIA, and FBI. Reid may walk softly, but I believe he carries a very big stick.. Check out this eyeopening link :

Maybe some people on here need a education. Blago has a criminal complaint not an indictment. Fitzgerald jumped the gun now he is asking for 90 more days. Also Illonis congress people jumped the gun too. They knew what was going on for years and not one of their dumb butts stood up. So the governor is in the legal right. Also the secretary of state has been signing things since Blago was arrested, so why did he sign these things from the governor. The Secretary of State is legally wrong to. Harry Reid is legally wrong too the little wimp that gave Bush everything. Reid needs to be kicked out of leadership role. Democrats can play this game if they want to knowing that Burris has a clean record if they want but they will pay the price in the next election more than they think. As far as Durbin, he knew what was going on also and didn't stand up. So Durbin sit your ass down along with Reid. Seat the man Burris because it is a legal appointment even though you can't stand the thought.

I'm thinking Reid needs to be tested for drug use. That big ole' honkin' red nose is screaming Coke...
It's rather ironic that Reid chooses to use his clout publicly for the first time in this way. I think he's doing the right thing for a change but man, he really should have stood up to Bush, at least a little...

Burris chose to accept a noimination that was deemed radioactive by everyone else. It's no wonder he never made it to a national office.

Another misleading headline on HP. As best as I can tell, the word Republican appeared once in a "throw away" sentence halfway through the article. Where do they come up with these headlines? Do they get them out of fortune cookies or Bazooka Joe bubblegum comics?

Reid is tilting at windmills, why didn't he fight for Bush and Cheney's Impeachment like this or the FISA law..?

The man is 2nd rate and has failed repeatedly and then makes a huge case over this when from a purely Constitutional sense the seat is now by rights, Burris's..

What is going on here? Is Reid trying to bully the Illinois legislature into removing Blagojevic?

From the Meet the Press transcript:

Reid: "And then if Pat Quinn--who I've spoken to, a very fine man who's the lieutenant governor--would become the acting governor or the governor, he wants to appoint Burris or anyone else, that would be fine."

They are already working to remove him - this was Reid giving his public blessing to the impeachment. And an olive branch to Burris - letting him know he is only opposed to Blago being the appointer.

If Quinn has a different idea - then things will get real hinky real fast.

If Burris was a Republican, Harry would be wringing his hands, saying there was nothing he could do to stop it. But since he's a Democrat, Harry's going to give 'em hell. Why are they keeping this loser in a leadership position?!

Mr. Reid seats Mr. Burris. His appointment was not illegal. Are there to protect the law of the land? I don't care if the appointment is tainted or not. What care is it the appointment legal or not?

Don't play politics. Just seat the Mr. Burris. Let the law deals with Mr.Blago for what he has done. But for now Mr. Blago is not guilty until proven guilty. And please stop guilt by association things.

The Senate has special rights about who can be in it. They can expel from among them anyone they wish by a simple voting procedure, or they can refuse to seat someone whose credentials are suspect (meaning, someone who may have bribed a governor to get there). The Senate is supposed to work like a college, with all the senators studying together what the best laws should be. They can't do that effectively if there's someone among them they think was appointed through bribery.
