LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Scientists at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences hope to begin clinical trials this spring on a vaccine to prevent the recurrence of breast cancer.

If successful, the vaccine would not replace traditional treatment such as chemotherapy and radiation but could be an additional treatment for patients, said Laura Hutchins, the principal investigator, professor of internal medicine, and director of the division of hematology and oncology.

Thomas Kieber-Emmons, director of basic breast cancer research at the UAMS Winthrop P. Rockefeller Cancer Institute, said the vaccine was developed over a decade of study on the immune system. He said the key was understanding how different molecules work together to combat disease.

Breast cancer cells are covered with molecules, called antigens, that are capable of triggering the production of antibodies that fight breast cancer cells. But the carbohydrate antigens on cancer cells don't stimulate a strong immune system response.

Kieber-Emmons and his team came up with an alternative approach with a six-year, $2.9 million grant from the U.S. Department of Defense. They developed peptide antigens that mimic the carbohydrates.

A peptide is a compound consisting of two or more amino acids. The peptide-based vaccine tricks the body into producing antibodies that target both the peptides in the vaccine and the carbohydrates they resemble on the breast cancer cells.

The trials will be done in phases. The first phase will last four to six months, and involve women with cancer that is actively spreading and women whose cancer has come back after going into remission. The women will receive five doses of the vaccine.

The second phase will last about a year and include women who have had breast cancer but are in remission and considered at high risk of getting it again. The women will have to have been off chemotherapy for at least six months.

The number of patients participating in the study hasn't been determined.

Breast cancer is the leading cause of cancer death in Hispanic women and the second most-common cause of cancer death in white, black, Asian and American Indian women. In 2004, 40,954 women died of breast cancer, according to the Centers for Disease Control

s latest data. That same year, 362 men died of the disease.

I would prefer to see some research into the association between the standard American diet (SAD) and the incidence of breast cancer. Simple lifestyle choices like eating increased amounts of vegetables and fruit along with a very high fiber diet have been shown to lower 16a-OH estrogen.
Increased intake of pyridoxal 5 phosphate (vitamin B-6) in the diet has also shown the ability to significantly reduce gene transcription responses when estrogen binds to the tissue receptor.
We seek these creams and shots and pills but all too often the truth is something we are not interested in, and it is our own lifestyle choices that have a massive effect on our health.
I am not against the "vaccine" (who on earth called it that anyway?) I am disappointed by the lack of interest into lifestyle changes and the profound impact it has on health.

Certainly a worthwhile endeaver. It is a shame that Health Insurance doesn't cover experimental medicine. Something like this could help 10's of thousands immediately. But I guess that risk is too great.

Before you spout off about vaccines and such you really should take an immunology class

And maybe learn yourself a bit about what is called Evidence Based Medicine

then you can draw your conclusions based on facts

What is the point of running pictures like this. Do we need to be reminded what this cancers affects or is it more likely that these pictures are the real story.

The editor in charge of HuffPost's front page layout is required to include the following:

A minimally clad female body verging on soft core porn.

A bizarre crime story.

An alien invasion, Elvis sighting, or other National Enquirer grade piece.

Happens like clockwork.

look, while it's true i only clicked on the article link to see a larger detail of the very lovely breasts depicted in the photo caption, i now know more about the work being done to develop a vaccine to prevent the recurrence of breast cancer and I can direct others to the information should a need arise. I also got a semi. but that's just because I get turned on by peptide-based vaccines.

Yeah its called vitamin D, its free from the sun and CAN prevent 77% of ALL cancers. http://www.naturalnews.com/021892.html
http://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2008/05/080515174000.htm
Have a look at these cancer cure drugs and notice that there is a peculiar ingredient, its called a vitamin D, synthetic copy, or a synthesised copy of natural vitamin d3 as they cant patent a natural vitamin.
Add to this a cheap calcium and hundreds of studies prove that the rates of prevention increase.
Did you also know that there is another weapon against breast cancer, its called marijana.
Its so effective, three drugs have been forged from its ingredient THC, the part that gets you high.
There is a massive hydroponic centre in germany where the drow it for these drugs, where they are currently trying to distribute it worldwide.
Marjuana thats legal for drug companies but illegal for the rest of us. The US govt hasn't told you that they hold a patent on a cannabis drug either http://www.digitaljournal.com/article/257008

These ARE the most powerful proven cures for cancer, and it has been already established that cancer halts it growth and reverses.
There are hundreds of natural plants that have powerful cancer killing properties already proven to work far better than current drugs on the market and have no side effects, yet you will not hear about them, cause if the world knew the truth, a trillion dollar industry would collapse.

If people out there want these so called vaccines, let them get them, your choice. But it's also my choice NOT to get them or to choose not to get hem for my family. Freedom is the real issue here. Don't give me that "public health" bullshit. Freedom of choice.

Right couldn't possibly be a public safety issue here, it's all about you. Good luck with your b.u.l. l.s.h. it.

Maybe you can start your own religion, something phony like scientology and claim you don't have to listen to medical science. Everything you know and think you know has been given to you by science and every year you will ever have over 30 and everyone you have ever known.

You wouldn't be on this forum l.y.i.n.g your A. -ssoff, if it wasn't for science.

So whatever you think is what the rest of us should follow, right? You can "choose" what the rest of us should do with our bodies, but I can't have my choice, too? Very American.

And I didn't say anything about medical science, nor did I lie about anything, just voicing my OPINION. Freedom of Speech, ever hear of it? Plenty of medical science is valid, surgery is amazing, but don't kid yourself, the vaccines are far from infallible, they carry many risks and even diseases.

Oh, and public safety? If the rest of you love the vaccines so much, how is my not being vaccinated going to effect you? You're protected, right?

Please choose to contract a fatal disease for you and your family. Preferably one the rest of us have taken a "so called vaccine" for.

Ha-ha-ha. Aren't you nice? Oh and a fatal disease like chicken pox? Measles? Those diseases are rarely, if ever fatal, and even when they are, it's usually for some poor chap who has other medical problems. Why don't you look up how many people died from or even contracted paralytic polio in the worst year.

I think this is great but I'm surprised it made it on huffington post. There are a number of groups around the country working on breast cancer vaccines. The Hutch (in Seattle) already has one targetted to Her-2 (one of the common breast cancer targets) that is already in Phase II trials for women with resected stage III breast cancer who have had adjuvant chemotherapy. They also have vaccines in development for lung and ovarian cancer among others. Glaxo smith klein has a melanoma vaccine in trial. For a cancer vaccine even make it to trial in the general public it will first need to be shown effective in a high risk group such as women who have already been treated for a breast cancer or in women who have an identifiable genetic risk such as BRCA.

I love huffingtonpost but as a scientist I'm always dissappointed by the medical editing at this and pretty much every other mainstream news publication. This article is misleading in that it suggests that this is the first attempt to develop a breast cancer vaccine and that a vaccine is just around the corner.

I think HuffPost could use a science and technology section, which is certainly more
important than the media section. I suspect it will take a little time to develop editorial
respectability.

H P needs to check their policy of accompanying serious articles with racy photos. The off-color comments are the result of that poor decision.

Well, I wish these researchers the best of luck, but with some cautious optimism. I still remember when everyone thought Interferon was going to be THE miracle drug.

It's kind of a tease to do these articles BEFORE the trials.

After the trials, I could see, but before doesn't mean much beyond a hunch that it might work.
