Olympic swimmer Michael Phelps is golden in China again.

First he won a record eight gold medals at the Beijing Games.

Now Phelps is getting more than $1 million to be a spokesman for Mazda in China, the largest single sponsorship for a Western celebrity in Chinese history.

Phelps is heading back to Beijing for the first time since the summer Olympic Games. Dynamic Marketing Group's DMG Entertainment unit said in a statement that Phelps will endorse the Mazda 6 car in TV and print ads and public appearances.

Can somebody please tell me how Phelps has scored all those endorsement deals when he has all the personality of wallpaper paste? His turn hosting SNL was cringe inducing and his tv commercials thus far have been only slightly less mortifying.

Being the best in the world at something might have a little to do with it.

This just goes to prove how stupid endorsement deals are - I don't care WHO asks, I am not buying another car this year - finances are down - still paying on one of the cars I already own and I think they are just too expensive.

He didn't become one the greatest olympians ever because he was suppose to host a fading TV show. Why so bitter? He did an amazing job and achieved something incredible in his chosen discipline. He deserves about 60 minutes of fame. It'll all fade soon. But he earned what he's getting now.

Isn't it ironic and pathetic, our govt outsources our manufacturing to china and our so-called US athletes have to go there to make their money. Guess the soup kitchens and food stamp programs here don't need gold medal winners to promote them, govt policy has.

The government doesn't outsource manufacturing to China, companies do. Don't like it? Well don't complain about prices when some company stays in the US and has to charge more for their products which are more expensive to manufacture here. Phelps doesn't "have to go there to make his money". He's well known in China and was offered big money to do a commercial there. What's wrong with that?

On the good side, hopefully these ads will only run in China. I see enough of him already on the Rosetta Stone commercials.
