At a debate between candidates vying to lead the Republican National Committee, current chairman Mike Duncan said that President Bush's biggest mistake was "prosecution of the war."

"I think we failed in the way, originally, we were prosecuting the war," Duncan said in response to moderator Grover Norquist's question. Most of his rivals highlighted Bush's economic policy and spending. Former Maryland Lieutenant Governor Michael Steele listed the "failure to communicate on the war, Katrina, the bailout," and said he could add more.

A side note to consider on this issue is, great Presidents end wars of necessity, bad Presidents start wars of choice.

As usual, Republicans lie. It wasn't Bush's biggest mistake, it was his biggest crime. There's a huge difference...one means he's a stupid loser, the other, a future prison inmate.

The RNC has been wrong so many times, how do we know they got this one right? Put down the shovel and quit digging already. ADHD can be controlled with medication and behavioral therapy. Shut up and get some.

The RNC Chair offers cold comfort, after the fact, for the hundreds of
thousands dead and wounded and the massive debt.

THIS IS THE LEADERSHIP MESSAGE OF THE RNC!

"Ooops!"

Yes, bush lied to win popular support but isn't it slightly odd that while popular support has diminished, the rank and file of the GOP and even some dems, STILL support the war, calling it a necessary war?

"failure to communicate on the war, Katrina, the bailout," and said he could add more. "

Lets just make it short and sweet and say the last 8 years were a failure and that goes for everyone who embraced bush policies and plans (or lack thereof).

Reading the headline, I thought, wow, a Republican admitting that the war was a mistake. About time.

But then I read the lead-in, and I realized that the fellow was criticising the conduct of the war, not the fact that it was started in the first place on false pretenses.

Oh well, I guess these GOPers will never change.

Bush's biggest mistake, hopefully, will be thinking that he can get away with it....

Bush's biggest mistake is his very existence.

The GOP is the same script with a different cast.

Clearly the GOP still don't get it. Based on Mr. Duncans comments he clearly isn't speaking to the real issues surrounding Dubya. The more twisted part of it is that Dubya is the GOP. They backed him to the hilt and seem to back him to this day... the GOP still haven't really figured out that they are considered badguys and architects of the last 8 years of disaster - sure, the Dems helped, - but the GOP stole the election, pandered to the religious right (rather cynically so many insiders say), backed a man who tanked every business he ever touched, and installed an Administration run by C student draft dodging cowards... and now they think that somehow that has nothing to do with them, nothing major.... just some problems managing image?
Clueless...

I thought his biggest mistake was being a republican.

How about the failure was the decision to invade?

That is the fundamental idiocy from which all problems flowed.

And even if the war had turned out differently, the same fundamental result of the war would have occurred - a dramatic decrease of regional countervailing power to Iran and a dramatic increase of Iranian influence in the Arab Middle East.
