I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Monday morning Sasha and Malia Obama went to their first day of school at Sidwell Friends. Mom Michelle took the girls in a Secret Service motorcade with multiple SUVs and a police escort. Dad stayed back, after arriving in DC Sunday night and helping them get ready Monday morning.

First Malia was dropped off, then Sasha. They were accompanied by multiple ear piece-wearing agents.

Photos from inside the hotel getting ready are credited to the Obama Transition Office

They look very happy and well adjusted, I hope they stay that way. It must be hard living in a fishbowl and surrounded by armed strangers all of a sudden. I don't recall ever seeing the press cover white house children this way. Does anyone remember seeing Chelsea Clinton going off to school or for that matter did they ever report what school she was going to attend? My point is that some of this coverage seems unneccesary and would appear to place the children at greater risk.

I like these cute stories about the President-elect and his family. They make me smile.

Good luck to them, I was a new student once (for high school - yikes) and I know how hard it was. Imagine your father becoming one of the most influential and most famous of the world.

And I see this unfortunate, but if they were sent to public school, the girls would be hurt as soon as they hit the linoleum. :( Horrible.

I hope the best for these children. I wish the people that wished them well, would do the same for Palin's children.

I think people should just calm down and think for a moment.

First, neither of these two girls volunteered to be the daughters of the president of the United States. They have a right to go school in an enviroment that will not only promote their education but protect them from the danger associated with being the offspring of the most powerful man in the world.

Second, I remember seeing similar photos of black children being escorted into schools under vastly different circumstances. Put that in context and marvel.

Good point Scoffer. It only took a half a century to get here. I wish I could see what the next 50 years will bring, but I'll be dead by then.

Only losers gripe about seeing a couple of cute kids. If you don't want to see them, don't click on any articles about them ;)

I have to say that after watching these girls and how they interact with their parents and have held up under the extremes of the campaign trail, they are just delightful. What a pleasant change from those Bush brats, drinking and sticking their tongues out at photographers--they had absolutely NO CLASS at all! But, look at their family.

These are great little girls. As a retired pediatrician, I would suggest not warping their
lives with unnecessary media attention. Egocentrism is bad for children. hipo

So just how many security vehicles and law enforcement people does it take to transport the Obama kids to school?

I don't know... how many psychos would probably like to try to harm them? Multiply that number by 1.5 and you get the agents required for security.

i'm sure it'll be a different number every day to throw off any bad people that might be casing them. These are the first daughters afterall and there are some racist and psychotic people out there

If I would have had the money, my kids definitely would have gone to private schools, at least K-12. There are less distractions and better teachers.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:50 PM on 01/06/2009

Teachers in private schools aren't necessarily better than those in public schools; the difference is two distinct systems with different purposes and modes of operation. The system tends to make the teacher, not vice versa. I can put a good teacher in a bad school system, and that teacher over time would cease to provide quality services. On the other hand, a so-called bad teacher in a good school system would likely significantly improve or be subject to termination for incompetence.

What a stupid generalization to make, Slapme... There are great teachers in BOTH public and private schools, and there are some not-so-great teachers in BOTH public and private schools. Ridiculous to stereotype our education system this way. I love those Obama girls; they are absolutely adorable, and they have great and loving parents. I wish them all the best, and may God... and the secret service ... keep them safe.
