I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Shaquille O'Neal has re-listed his Miami Beach estate for $25 million.

Shaq was at one point seeking $35 million for the 19,000 sq. ft. estate, which has been on and off the market since 2005. The home sits on two acres in Miami's exclusive Star Island community.

The Phoenix Suns star bought the home while he was playing for the Miami Heat in 2004, for 18.8 million. Fellow athlete Alex Rodriguez was slated to buy the property in 2007 before his (now ex-) wife waffled, and a prospective buyer in November backed out after making a $19 million offer.

The listing advertises a gym, indoor racquetball court, tennis court, infinity pool with swim-up bar, and 300 feet of waterfront space along Biscayne Bay, in addition to a two bedroom guest apartment.

He should try 40% off the original $35 million retail. That'd be about $21 million - right in line with the rest of the United States market.

I have much more money than Shaq. I find homes like his to be disgusting in the extreme. They're an advertisement for gluttony. They indicate vast amounts of ignorance, insecurity and childish greed. The owners of these big piles of rock always put them somewhere so everyone can see them - with the pretentious hope they are envied for their stupid excessive, selfishness (and it works judging by many of the comments here). Shaq needs to invest in an education, then start a few foundations, maybe one to help Katrina victims and others who can't find affordable housing. Perhaps I should buy his dump and turn it into a giant homeless shelter and really piss off the neighborhood. I can afford to buy the zoning to go with it too. Envy that.

Its interesting how vicious and angry these comments are - with all the numerous money schemes we are hearing about , stealing millions of savings from innocent Americans that you would describe Shaq as " stupid" and "selfish"! He can buy whatever he wants to buy despite what you think of his taste, at least he is not the ivy league educated scam artist that is ripping people off! For your information, he has done so much in California (and in Miami) for children and single mothers who need homes and tuition for school. While with the Lakers, he bought a fleet of cars for the LAPD to ensure enough patrol cars for neighbourhoods that needed more police protection...I guess you cant please people enough.
Take some anger management classes and do your homework before you throw people under the bus just because they bought a big house! How judgemental!

Liberoservative, I have several foundations. You may not understand such issues are best kept private. Suffice it to say, Madoff has cost ours, and many others, vast amounts of charity dollars. Fortunately we are very diversified.

And Mama, I think perhaps you need to look at your own anger issues. You are right, Shaq has done well for himself and good for others. My little lecture was to get bloggers thinking about who they want to be and what it is they want for themselves. Sometimes one has to use strong language to get concepts across. As far as Shaq is concerned, I don't know him and I'm sure he's a great guy. But celebrity giving is often done to get more celebrity. The money donated is generally far less than what could have been provided.

This would be a good idea. A homeless shelter with all the supports necessary to get people back on their feet -- now that would be innovative.

I understand what you are getting at, but instead of saying what Shaq should do..... why don't you do that?
I made a mistake of watching Bravo's Real Housewifes of Atlanta over Christmas and was appalled at the excess that most of them indulged themselves with when there are starving children in Atlanta. If you got it then give it........ why does anybody need to spend 6 grand on a few pairs of shoes??

It's his money. He can spend it however he wishes.

How about you go ahead and buy O'Neil's house and turn it into a homeless shelter, for real? Such an action would a fantastic example to others like yourself who have "much more money than Shaq". I'm sure that would make the Huffington Post.

But what I'm really wondering is why someone who claims to be richer than one of the most highly paid athletes in the world wrote this six months ago (anyone can read this by clicking on cowgirl's username):

"A long with many others, I care enough to give up everything, leave a good career, and go into massive debt to return to school (both under and grad) for a degree in a field that would allow me to do something - Masters in Public Administration - for Sustainable Development. It's hard going, and jobs are not plentiful, but people do care and they spend a lot of time thinking and planning how to get others to do the same. be patient. things will change after november. Meanwhile, do what you can and prepare to live differently."

You can't have your rightious indignation both ways.

Oh geezz....you need a small army just to keep the grounds up and the place dusted. Can you imagine the utilities, maids, butlers, grounds keepers, property taxes....the rich live in a totally different reality.

Poor people make it big. They adjust their standard of living to the huge money coming in and then more. Suddenly, the money from investments stops. And they sell their standard of living investments at fire sale prices. In a few years they are poor people again. All their fame and hangers- on are gone. There is nothing left but the memories and the crying and regret. Why did I not listen to Michael?

Shaq is not selling this property because he needs the money, and after buying the property for $18.8 mil and listing it for $25 mil isn't a fire sale. Stop trying to make yourself feel better over the fact that they're able to live a life you can only dream of. Hater.

my brother has a very big house, and yes, they tend to live in part of the house, not the whole thing. you also need an intercom, because you can't hear someone on the other side of the house. there comes a time when big is to big. besides, excess is out.

Critical distances bed/bathroom/television/computer/kitchen is measured in light years. Many "residents" end up living in apartments in isolated corners of their palazzi. The exciting lives they envision don't materialize, and then there's divorce, financial vagaries, incarceration...

And what say you about the McCain's 10 homes ............. several of them quite large?

And it's not as if Shaq couldn't afford it ................. I guess how he chose to spend his money is his business ...................... In this economic climate there are many who would wish they had Shaq's "money" problems.

I say the same.

What Shaq can afford isn't what the article is about...we know he can afford it....and now he wants to ditch it -- and can't. Obviously it didn't bring him the joy you seem to imagine.

I couldn't even imagine how much the property taxes are on this estate, especially with the additional two bedroom guest house!

If you can afford this house you don't give a second thought as to what the property taxes are

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 06:06 PM on 01/05/2009

Between $425,000 and $637,500 per year.

In Florida, "just value" is about 85% of the sales price. If Shaq does sell this pile for $25,000,000 (and Good Luck!), the "just value' would be $21,250,000. Is that right? Well, moving right along, with property taxes somewhere between 2% and 2.5% of "just value", taxes would be somewhere between $425,000 and $637,500. It's the trade-off for no state income tax.
