The exterior of a synagogue is seen in Toulouse, southwestern France Tuesday Jan. 6, 2009 after a burning car was rammed into the synagogue's door on Monday. A burning car was rammed into a synagogue door in southwest France as the interior minister convened Muslims, Jews and police in Paris to warn against contagion from the Gaza conflict. Damage to the synagogue in a Toulouse neighborhood was limited to a blackened door, and there were no injuries even though a rabbi was giving a course to adults inside, said an official of the regional prefecture, Anne-Gaelle Baudouin. PARIS — Government officials and Jewish leaders are concerned the conflict in Gaza may spill over into violence in Europe, with attacks reported against Jews and synagogues in France, Sweden and Britain.

Assailants rammed a burning car into the gates of a synagogue in Toulouse, in southwest France, Monday night.

A Jewish congregation in Helsingborg, in southern Sweden, was attacked Monday night by someone who "broke a window and threw in something that was burning," said police spokesman Leif Nilsson. And on Sunday slogans, including "murderers ... You broke the cease-fire," were daubed on Israel's Embassy in Stockholm.

In Denmark, a 27-year-old Dane born in Lebanon to Palestinian parents is alleged to have injured two young Israelis last week in a shooting police suspect could be linked to the Gaza crisis. Belgium ordered police in Antwerp and Brussels to be on increased state of alert" Tuesday after recent pro-Palestinian protests ended in violence and arrests.

France has Western Europe's largest Jewish and Muslim communities and a history of anti-Semitic violence flaring when tensions in the Middle East are high. In 2002, some 2,300 Jews left France for Israel because they felt unsafe. Even in normal times, anti-Semitic incidents are not uncommon.

President Nicolas Sarkozy warned in a statement Tuesday that France would not tolerate violence linked to the Gaza crisis. A day earlier, his interior minister said she was concerned about the prospect of contagion and met with the heads of the two main Muslim and Jewish groups and police officials to stress the need to "preserve national unity."

Jews in the small Strasbourg suburb of Lingolsheim in eastern France woke up Tuesday to find graffiti with words like "assassins" spray-painted on the outside walls of their synagogue. The community filed a complaint for "degradation of a place of worship," the mayor's office said.

Damage to the synagogue in Toulouse was limited to a blackened gate. Police said unlighted gasoline bombs were found in a car nearby and in the synagogue's yard. A local Jewish leader, Armand Partouche, said he believed the assailants fled when the building's alarm went off.

Local authorities promised Tuesday to boost security for synagogues and other Jewish sites in the city, Partouche said.

"We really fear that anti-Semitism will spring up again and that the current conflict will be transposed to our beautiful French republic," Partouche said.

French Muslim leader Mohammed Moussaoui condemned the attack, saying no motive could justify an assault on any place of worship.

Interior Ministry spokesman Gerard Gachet said police have not noted an increase in violence against Jews linked to the Gaza crisis. But he said tensions are likely.

In Britain, the Community Security Trust, a Jewish defense group, said it had seen a rise in anti-Semitic incidents since the start of Israel's offensive against Gaza. The group said it recorded 20-25 incidents across the country in the past week _ a sizable increase from 2-3 incidents usually reported to the group over the Christmas-New Year period.

Police are investigating an arson attempt Sunday on a synagogue in north London. Assailants splashed liquid on the door and set it on fire. Police would not speculate on whether the attack was linked to the Gaza crisis.

In another incident last week, a gang of 15-20 youths walked along the main street in Golders Green, a largely Jewish neighborhood in north London, shouting "Jew" and "Free Palestine" at passers-by, said Community Security Trust spokesman Mark Gardner.

Attacking Jews worldwide is no solution to the problem. That is what caused Zionism to flourish in the first place. The policies of Israel are misguided to some extent, no doubt, but there must be a political solution to this sore which has festered. One of the problems is the unconditional support for the neo-colonial policies in the EU and the US which support these same policies in Israel. Neo-liberal economic policies require neo-colonial militaristic policies. The age of neo-liberalism is over but those who profit are not backing off. Expect to see massive privatization of infrastructure, for example, and increased militarization in the quest for resources. There are those who would never permit peace in the Middle East because of oil, land and water. The divide and rule policies of the British are alive and well. The thinking goes back to the Sikes-Picot treaty of 1916 when the European powers divided up the former Ottoman Empire. The Balfour Declaration sealed the fate of the Palestinians. The policies of Ariel Sharon and George W. Bush will kill many millions more is my prediction. Funny how this can be called "religion." Can we just call it a grab for money, power, and resources. Let's leave poor ole God out of it and call it what it really is.

In hind sight. Here are some of the people Palestinian Arabs should NOT have supported:
Germany, Turkey during WW1, Germany during WW2, Soviets during Cold war, Saddam Hussein during Kuwait invasion, Syrian Baath party, Ayatollah Khomeini, Ayatollah Khamenei, Osama Bin Laden. Palestinians have a genius for backing all the wrong horses, It's like a bad karma or somethin.' A few more stunts like Hamas election and the fate of Kurds is theirs.
The world is becoming more comfortable with the idea of Palestinians without their own state.
They better come to their senses while there's still a short window of opportunity left.

Right, keep believing that the world is becoming more comfortable with the idea of a Palestinian state. Why don't you just call for an ethnic cleansing of the Palestinians which is what you really want to say.

The world is becoming more aware of the plight of the Palestinians and growing weary of Israeli tactics. You've got it backwards. The puppet heads and leaders of the world tow the Israeli line and pay lip service. But the people, the citizens of the world are learning of the apartheid state that Israel is.

This is horrible. No reasonable person can condemn Israel's collective punishment of Palestinians and DEFEND collective punishment against Jews. All the Jews in the world cannot be held responsible for the actions of one country.

Even I am getting a bit unease about this all.

Excuse me? It's one thing to refer to the treatment of Palestinians by Israelis as the way Europeans treated Jews BEFORE the Nazis. There are many Israelis who talk about that-racism that does exist in Israel, mentality of SOME that all Arabs and Muslims are antisemitic terrorists...

But there's a difference between war with unfortunate civilian causalities (or else you consider the allied response to the Nazis-bombing of German cities and Japanese cities, etc, as Nazi tactics) and ethnic cleansing and genocide.

It's antisemitic to compare Israeli to Nazi Germany. Seriously-it's in the EU definition of antisemitism. It's not antisemitic to be critical of Israel. I'm a pro-Israel American who wishes the US would not give Israel free reign and I myself am very critical of some Israeli policies. But they are not Nazis.

Does Israel round up millions of Palestinians and make them wear clothing to distinguish them? Does Israel publish propaganda likening Palestinians to rats? Does Israel take innocent Palestinians from their homes, day or night, and shoot them point-blank? Does Israel pack millions of Palestinians into cattle trains, with no food or water, leaving them to stew in excrement and an increasing number of dead bodies for days or weeks? Does Israel want to eliminate all Palestinians from the face of the earth? Does Israel purpose-build camps for this purpose? Does Israel kill millions of Palestinians in gas chambers and try to hide the evidence?

Israel knew very well the effect their jingoism would have.

But such 'collateral damage' has never detered their ambitions for the Palestinians' land.

Here's a solution that is completely fair and nobody will like. Close all Jewish and Muslim churches/synogogues/mosques; period. When (make that if) both sides can ever agree to live and let live, and leave each other alone, they can be reopened. 2000 years of this is ridiculous! This is just more proof that religion (not spirituality-BIG difference) is the root cause of most war and discontent.

Both sides are at fault for this ongoing conflict, and news like this is just going to get worse. This is going to spread to so many other counties and it will get worse. An eye for an eye will make the whole world blind, as said by Mahatma Gandhi. Too bad no one will listen. Attacking Jews in other countires is the dumbest thing I have heard of. I don't support any side, because they are both at fault and this will never end.

IT SEEMS THAT THE GUILTY CONSCIENCES ARE MAKING ISRAEL SCAPEGOATS AGAIN BECAUSE THEY FAILED TO ACT WHEN THEY HAD THE CHANCE IN LEBANON WITH THE HEZBOLLA AND NOW WITH HAMAS. WHEN THE TOLL RISES EVEN HIGHER AND THE BLOOD FLOWS IN EUROPEAN
STREETS THEY MAY REALIZE THAT TERRORIST ARE TERRORIST NO MATTER WHAT COUNTRY THEY ARE IN. THE BURNERS AND BOMBERS KNOW NO LIMITS. IT WILL NOT TAKE MUCH MORE TO SPREAD INTO OTHER COUNTRIES IN EUROPE AND ASIA. CONGRATULATIONS TO THE UN AND ITS HEADS IN THE SANDS MEMEMBERS.

Exactly! Exacting collective punishment against innocent Jews -- especially when quite a number of them also condemn what Israel is doing -- would make us no better than Israel's war hawks. Political and economic action against the state of Israel is what is called for, not against any more innocents.

I think that sounds like a great plan.

Step one-don't buy any more computers... the pentium-4 microprocessor and the Centrino processor were, hey, designed, developed, and produced in Israel.

Step two-stop sending texts. SMS technology, you got it, invented in Israel. In fact, get rid of your cell completely

Step three-Turn off that pesky Israeli firewall

Step 4-if you manage to find computers with parts not developed by or produced in Israel, better stay off those personal messaging programs like aol instant messenger and ICQ

And ya know, just never get sick, especially seriously, because many medical advancements these days come from Israeli doctors and scientists. Well, good luck!

Exactly! Keep a card in your wallet stating that in case of medical emergency you refuse all medicines, medical proceedures, lab protocols and surgical proceedures developed in Israel, especially emergency room proceedures. Have everyone in your family carry one!

Exactly!

Nationalist Zionism has appropriated Judaism and alienated many right-minded Jews who in no way bear any responsibility for it's colonialist ideology.

Sanctions combined with suspension of US aid - military and financial - would be a good start.

"It could have been very, very serious," Partouche said in a telephone interview. "There were people inside; there could have been deaths."

That's pretty ironic, considering that Israel is targeting mosques (and apartment buildings and schools and hospitals) in Gaza and it has been resulting in a lot of very definite deaths. That said, the outright violence against Jews is deplorable. First of all, a lot of Jews themselves oppose what Israel is doing, and second, it's always, always, ALWAYS wrong to target someone because of their ethnicity or religion and for no better reason.

There is the anti-semitism that lurks everywhere. You think it's ok to attack Jews in Denmark because the Israeli's are bombing mosques in Gaza? That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. How about attacking Christians in Japan because Tim McVey (a Christian) blew up a day care center? That makes about as much sense. All Jews are not Israelis and I got news for you, not all Israeli's are Jews. Not only that, the Israeli government is secular. It's not like the Vatican.
