Brad Pitt Defends Angelina: There Wasn't Some "Dastardly Affair"

I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Brad Pitt defends partner Angelina Jolie, denies she's a homewrecker in the February issue W Magazine. Pitt met Jolie on set while still married to Jennifer Aniston, whom he calls "a sweetheart."

He also talks gay marriage and quitting smoking.

On the public's misinterpretation of his and Jolie's "affair"...
"What people don't understand is that we filmed [Mr. & Mrs. Smith] for a year. We were still filming after Jen and I split up. Even then it doesn't mean that there was some kind of dastardly affair. There wasn't. I'm very proud of the way that it was handled. It was respectful. [The film] will mean something to our kids. It will, that's all."

On Aniston's recent comment that it was "uncool" for Jolie to openly state that she and Pitt fell in love on the set of Mr. & Mrs. Smith... "Listen, man, Jen is a sweetheart. I think she got dragged into that one, and then there's a second round to all of that Angie versus Jen. It's so created."

On his current relationship with Aniston... "We still check in with each other. She was a big part of my life, and me hers. I don't see how there cannot be [that]. That's life, man. That's life."

On photographing Jolie for W magazine's November 2008 photo spread..."We have fun working together; these things bring you closer. And let me tell you, it's really sexy to see your loved one through the lens. I went much further [than the cover shot of Jolie breast-feeding]. I didn't show those."

On how family life has changed him..."I quit smoking. That was the only thing that got me to quit. That was it. Done."

On gay marriage rights... "People who are against gay marriage do not understand the very freedoms that they themselves are enjoying. What if someone said, 'Sorry, no Christianity here? No Judaism. Certainly no Mormons.' No one would stand for that, and I wouldn't allow anyone to say that either. I'd fight them in the same way."

ON WHAT MOTIVATED HIS REQUEST FOR PHOTOGRAPHER CHUCK CLOSE, WHO USES A TECHNIQUE CALLED DAGUERREOTYPE THAT CAPTURES EVERY FINE LINE AND FLAW, TO SHOOT HIM... "[to not have to be] the guy coming out of the ocean water with his T-shirt wet, even though I've done that, too, but have always walked away feeling a little crap about it."

Read whole interview. The issue hits stands Jan. 20.

Some of the Chuck Close in the magazine are below.

Brad's one of those guys who will always have boyish good looks. The 'stache doesn't work on boyish faces. I hope it's just for a role and it crawls off his face ... soon.

Brad Pitt seems like a nice guy but I think people confuse him with some of the charismatic characters he has played in his career. It's good to see the true Brad Pitt in black and white.

Three angels up above the street
Each one playing a horn
Dressed in green robes with wings that stick out
They're been there since Christmas morn'
The wildest cat from Montana passes by in a flash
Then a lady in a bright orange dress
One U-Haul trailer, a truck with no wheels
The Tenth Avenue bus going west
The dogs and pigeons fly up and they flutter around
A man with a badge skips by
Three fellows crawling on their way back to work
Nobody stops to ask why
The bakery truck stops outside of that fence
Where the angels stand high on their poles
The driver peeks out, trying to find one face
In this concrete world full of souls
The angels play on their horns all day
The whole earth in progressions seems to pass by
But does anyone hear the music they play?
Does anyone even try?

All of this celebrity crapola would be fine with me if I didn't suspect that they are serving as role models for less celebrated people. What part of the word "vows" are they failing to understand?

A friend cheated on his first wife with his second wife, then cheated on the second with a woman he hoped would be his third wife. They were even building a house together when she realized that she didn't trust him and never would and broke it off. Of course, he was heartbroken (temporarily) and stuck with a basement excavation and a building lot,. She married somebody "more trustworthy" within six months or so. I suspect that I would have the same kind of doubts if I were involved in a relationship based on deception, sneaking around and outright cheating.

I think there is a group of people (of both sexes) to whom vows mean little or nothing because they just can't sustain a relationship that isn't based on some element of danger of being caught.. Or as Woody Allen put it (something like) "the heart must have what the heart must have." This is all just fine if one wants to redefine "heart" as that part of the body that behaves like a crazed adolescent. and sneaks around like a weasel.

All is fair in love. I'm stoked observing this truly wonderful display of love and family. Their love generates an energy all its own and shines very bright. That was missing in the previous life.

Barack & Michele, Brad & Angie, my sister and her husband are the brightest examples in my universe of true love.

Detractors, don't be jealous! It could happen for you. . .

Miss Blanchette is too classy for Miss Jolie to have anything to worry about there. So her marriage is safe for now, but once a guy pulls something like that on one woman, not much stopping history from repeating itself.

Agreed. Even better, as someone mentioned above, Jennifer Anniston got between he and Paltrow. Sure, he wasn't married at the time, but there was something funny going on. Sounds to me like Brad has a wandering eye. Watch out, Angie. He'll do it again. And again it will blamed on whatever women are involved in the scenario instead of the man at the center of the problem.

AJ was a homewrecker already before meeting him. It means nothing coming from him, but says plenty that he won't marry her. Maybe that's the way to keep her hooked longer!? He can justify leaving a wife with the children he's had since, but he won't go as far as marry her. She's not that virtuous, no matter how many children she collects.

Just like Jen got in between Brad and Gwyneth (at the time they were all over the papers as practically engaged, so in love with each other)...

There is a pattern here...

Beautifully put Brad. I'm happy to see you say something about this. It hurts me when so many people say hateful things about you, Angelina or Jen. Its so ridiculous. Total strangers spewing hateful comments towards 3 people who have provided so much great entertainment for us all to enjoy.

Its pretty strange that people expect actors to be perfect human beings. They themselves are so far off the mark when they engage in this hateful behavior.

I would just like to thank you for so many awesome movies!! I just saw Benjamin Button, and it was sooooo beautiful. I cried at the very end. I was in a full movie house, and it was very silent at the end of the movie. A huge silent crowd. Impressive.

I agree with you. These people are ENTERTAINERS and not role models. Unfortunately, since we (society) seems to revere them as 'anointed' because some people in some top positions picked them out to live these crazy lives with wealth, fame, and fortune, we only have to look to ourselves as the culprits when we feel victimized by something they did wrong. They aren't our leaders. They made it to the top with a little luck and hard work. They're not perfect, so why are we looking to them as role models? They help to tell stories that we want to see. Magazines found out that they could make a buck by stalking actors, and we buy them. Actors don't deserve our wrath just because they make more money than most of us. Since we treat them as larger than life, we are willingly putting ourselves in peon status.

Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder and I see so much depth and intensity in Brad's. Don't see the "help me" as for the "protest too much" can we say Jennifer Aniston whines overly much.

Christ almighty, they are divorced for how many years now?!!!

Yes, he does too much explaining. If you cheat, own up to it. I'm not against cheating, homewrecking, and adultery per se;such behavior is an acquired taste. But I am turned off by cheaters who continually try to justify their behavior.

Brad has never said anything about this situation...he handled it as privately as possible. I think it is great that he is speaking up for Angelina. He loves her, and when so many people talk mean about her, it hurts.

None of these people spewing hateful remarks about any of these three people actually know any of them. Your comment about his dignity is ridiculous. And, if Jen had not answered questions about this subject, it would have gone away a long time ago. I'm not judging her, because I don't know her...but her interview stirred this all up again, and Brad has to see and hear his partner being villified by strangers. I think what he said about both women is beautiful, and I for one am glad he did.

Lets not forget, these 3 people are very talented actors. I don't know one actor who ever claimed to be a perfect human being. So, why is it fair that millions of strangers judge them for things they know nothing about!!

If you and your spouse broke up and an affair may or may not have been the cause, would you talk about it EVERYTIME someone asked you about it? My guess is no, refuse to answer questions about the Jen/Angie situation and people will stop asking. NO it is NOT dignified to keep discussing what may or may have taken place years ago. I like him, but it is a tad classless. Stop entertaining the foolishness and the reporters will stop asking questions. What every happened to discretion and privacy????!!!!!

An affair doesn't have to be physical; it can be emotional. So, even if they didn't have a physical affair, they had an emotional affair.

It's the magazine that is asking the questions. He's answering in as dignified and limited way possible and still do his job - which is to promote his film, something all actors have to do (usually its even in their contracts). So, if you don't want to read about this in interviews, here is my advice - DON'T.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:11 PM on 01/07/2009

He has the choice to say he's done answering questions about it.
