Ann Coulter's Past Fake Media Firestorms Remembered

I Like ItI Don’t Like It

You know, it's not for nothing that I say things like, "Let's face it, she's been dining out for years now on the same set of grievances," when I talk about Ann Coulter. The only thing separating the act she takes on the road and that of Arrested Development's Gob Bluth is that you rarely get to hear Europe's "The Final Countdown" played. And some of this microwaved material isn't even her own! Here's a snip from her sit-down with Today's Matt Lauer, today:

MATT LAUER: [In the book] you also say that the liberal media and Democrats are out to accomplish the same thing: they want to destroy America. So, I mean, go ahead: why do liberals and the media want to destroy America?

ANN COULTER: Why? Their motives? Well, I'd have to be their confessor or psychologist to understand that. I'm describing the results. And a beautiful example of this--my Chapter Two of the book--is the exaltation of single-motherhood. It's promoted in the New York Times and in glossy women's magazines and in Hollywood movies. And we now know after 30 years of promoting single-motherhood, of the courts destroying the institution of marriage, that children raised without fathers are filling up the prisons. 70% of the teenage runaways, of teenage pregnancies, of rapists --

Griping about single mothers? Jiminy crickets, y'all! That claptrap was way more trenchant back when Dan Quayle was calling out Murphy Brown on teevee, to the delight of Americans who traveled by zeppelin!

But that's what Coulter is all about, a tireless champion of warmed-over shtick. Why, all of this jujitsu with the Today show is just another example of the tiresome tactics she's used in her quest for self-promotion. At the risk of being the last guy on the internet to quote the Washington Independent's Dave Weigel on the matter, here's the Washington Independent's Dave Weigel on his days as a professional Coulter-wrangler for USA Today:

Coulter handed in her first column closer to the deadline then we'd expected. She also came in short. And she came in ... well, what's the opposite of readable? The column that began "Here at the spawn of Satan convention" was a phoned-in collection of anonymous anecdotes and lazy writing. No problem, we thought: We're editors. My bosses immediately suggested fixes to the column -- some of them asking whether Coulter could touch up her jokes, some correcting bad writing, and some asking for more content.

Coulter flipped. She refused to answer all of the edits. The next thing we knew, she had left Boston. The next thing we knew after that was that Matt Drudge and other conservative news site editors had learned that we had "fired" Coulter. She was in New York hours later to bash us on Fox News' "Hannity and Colmes."

This is all a way of saying I don't believe that NBC News "banned Coulter for life" for one second. She doesn't really worry about taking advantage of news organizations' standards and confidentiality to paint herself as a victim.

Precisely. And this week's Grievance Tango is just another example of this: a tired act that would have really played swell back in the days of vaudeville. But vaudeville's dead, dead as disco, dead as doormice.

You know, it's not for nothing that I say things like, "Let's face it, she's been dining out for years now on the same set of grievances," when I talk about Ann Coulter. The only thing separating the...

Some of the most miserable people I have met are those that stay married for the children

Ask some of those kids what growing up in those houses was like

the real problem is the supposed adults who act like aholes in divorce/support situations

haters have to stop blaming the opposite sex

OMG, do you think this is a woman??? I have never seen a woman with an adam's apple the size of hers, and when she/he is yammering that adam's apple gets to bobbing so fast you cant help but notice it. She is a typical repressed right wing male, I would be willing to put money on that bet.

I don't think her book is even fit to be used as kindling for a fire!

My opinions and impressions after watching words come out of her mouth amounts to what I call the ERROS:=ERROR!! = Egotistic Rabid Racism On Steroids!

A Walking breathing ERROR!! I agree with a previous poster, this book of shame-filled prejudices will likely sell for 30 days, and after that, it will collect dust in a Dollar Store.

Further, in my opinion, this woman should be on serious medication, and should never miss a dose!!!
And she should be on the Federal Watch List. She sounds dangerous to me. What hatred and prejudice that came out of her mouth!!!
No wonder this interview was scheduled and canceled. It should have remained canceled. Keep this slice of cake silent!!!

Ann is going to just fade away. I believe we will have a new era where we try to build consensus versus build dissent. I look forward to the fading into history, Ann, free-market capitalism, Reaganomics, and a lot of other ideas and policies that fed our darker angels. If somebody asks me about Ann--my response is, "Ann who?". From my perspective she's no longer visible.

She recycles all her outrage at this point in the game. What was that comment about GM trucks that blow up???? Was that about ten years ago? She is irrelevant and she knows it which is why she is simply getting louder. Same for the entire left-over neocon clan.

I didn't realize it was so passe to discuss real problems affecting this country such as single mother homes. I guess that's soooo 1980s?

Ok, I’ll play with you.

I will agree that Single Mother Homes are a problem and at some point should be addressed. But why right now? If people are losing their jobs all over the place then some of them will be single mothers, and I think a bunch of Unemployed Single Mother Homes is a much bigger problem.

And why wasn’t this an issue during the last 8 years? Couldn’t this have been one of GW Bush’s top priorities?

Also can you point me to the studies that show Divorce is only a Liberal problem? Don’t Republicans also get divorced? Or did the Liberals corrupt those Strong Conservatives.

She specifically said "unwed mom" ... but a lot of single moms are also divorced .... An if we stop with this abstinence only non-sense, maybe teenage pregnancy will decrease.. Not to start naming names but Bristol Palin's pregnancy is more the fruit of abstinence only than of single mom ....

I'm trying to figure who said "right now" besides you. And no one said it's a "liberal" problem, although it's liberal policies and philosophies that have largely contributed to the problem in general. Given the connection between single-parent upbringing and crime, unemployment, drug use, etc. I say now is as good a time as any to start working on it. It took decades to get us to this point, so this problem is not going to be fixed over night. When do you propose (no pun intended) we start working on it?

Coulter just is not very bright. And yes,
the issues she brings up are old and
tired. She's just plain lazy and trying to
make a quick buck.

Hmm, so the problems of single parent homes are "old & tired"? Are you suggesting we give up trying to confront that issue? Can you imagine if someone said that about racism?

So. . . rude and obnoxious are the new patriotism?

If drama queens like Coulter, Limbaugh, Hannity are the leading media representatives of the Republican Party, no wonder there was a "Reverse Bradley" at the polls.

Personally, I'd be too embarrassed to publicly admit to ANYONE if I were a member of the GOP.

(And just in case anyone might be wondering -- NO! Don't even THINK about it!)

I've read a couple of Ann's books. They are actually full of good info and ideas. I only have two cricisms of them though. One is they are a little wordy (use of big words unecessarily). The other is there are not enough pictures of Ann. I find her lovely.
I wholly support her rights of free speech as much as anyone else's. I only wish that liberals would value everyone's free speech instead of just their own.

Free speech is not the same thing as being given public air time every time she wants to shill her book. We don't give pedophiles public air space to shill books, but they certainly have freedom of speech.

You see the difference there, genius?

..."full of god info and ideas." ???

If your store of information is so meager as to believe that Coulter books contain good info and ideas, then you either read ONLY right-wing crap and conspiracy theory, or outside of her books, you read nothing at all.

This "rights of free speech" dodge is a familiar right-wing whine. Palin even did it on the campaign trail - implying that by reporting on her, the media were crowding her first amendment rights. . While rabid right-wingers claim the free speech right to demean, dismiss, ridicule and demonize all speech, ideas and actions but their own, if right-wing thought or speech is criticized, it's an "infringement of their first amendment rights."

This is why they live in (baseless) terror of the Fairness Doctrine making a comeback. To them, being contradicted is a nullification of their rights.

THIS EXACTLY. They are so blind to their own hypocrisy it's boggling. Palin's unmarried daughter and rowdy not-yet-son-in-law are the 'darlings' of the conservative world, while other, less 'fortunate' single mothers (re: single mothers of color) are lambasted as 'destroying American values'.

Get a life, Ms. Coulter.

I would imagine Coulter's books have short chapters so her readers' lips don't get too tired.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:23 AM on 01/08/2009

I get tired of seeing her looking down on everyone, while flipping her hair and flirting with everyone on the TV. Why should single mothers be punished?

Being a single mother myself, for a good 16 years out of my 18 year old daughter's life, I am so glad that Coulter has all the answers. *She isn't a mother or married*. What does she know? Some people don't have a choice about single parenting and this is just another narrow minded, hate filled, immature comment from her. Coulter is no example to follow by telling people to get drunk and vote BTW. She is a poor example of an adult.

Advice to the Republican Party--Distance yourself from this woman. I don't want my kid or any others reading her garbage or seeing her on TV. Do NOT BUY her books and make her money. It is just feeding the problem. The money you spend on her book could buy some kid a textbook for school instead. She has said that she doesn't even think Women should be allowed to vote. She seems like the last person to be preaching about honor, integrity, accountability, or morals. What a hypocrite. She discriminates against people that we should be Helping. This shallow, childish woman is not an example that we, as a society, need to "exalt".

I couldn't have said it better Dallas! I too have an 18-year old daughter who I raised alone for 14 of those years. I know one thing: she's turned out to be a far more decent, caring, and worthy young woman than this used up harpy could ever hope to be.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 09:01 AM on 01/08/2009

Who said anything about "punishing" single mothers? Are you suggesting that, given your one personal story, that single parent homes are preferable to two parent homes? Ann's book apparently cites many studies that link many of society's problems to children coming from single parent homes. Why are you so loathe to discuss or even recognize that point she's trying to make? I guess it's kinda like the "conversation on race" that liberals always say they want to have -- right up until they hear something they don't like, at which point they throw out accusations of being "narrow minded, hate filled", etc.

She lacks credibility just like Matt Lauer said. She throws tantrums and is mean. She tells people to get drunk and vote. She is immature. People with real lives who are raising kids to be quality adults, and maybe are involved in helping others don't want to hear her hot air. She has her right to free speech . When you put yourself out there the way she does, you should expect criticism. Especially from people you have burned with racism and/or hate.
Sadder is I am not even a liberal. I still don't like her. Maybe I will change my tune if I run into her volunteering at the local homeless shelter or feeding people at a soup kitchen. Maybe if she puts some booksales toward an unwed mother center, I will respect her a bit.

Well, yeah - when we hear the "conversation on race" that goes "Blacks are just lazy and irresponsible," we call that narrow-minded and hate-filled because it is.

Do you have an example of "liberals" responding that way to a statement that was fair and compassionate?

You can't wave a magic wand, or preach, or rant and rave, and make people marry. "Liberals" didn't make people stop marrying or discourage marriage or PROMOTE single-parenthood. And you can't make unmarried people stop having sex and children. You can't legislate it, moralize it, or incentivize it. It's not gonna happen.

What you CAN do is give people the resources (education, opportunity, absence of prejudice) to lead fulfilling and productive lives. Suddenly, you will find them marrying and raising crime-free kids by the bushel.
