WASHINGTON — The upcoming inauguration of Barack Obama is an attractive target for international and domestic terrorists, but U.S. intelligence officials have no information about specific threats to the Jan. 20 event.

An internal intelligence assessment, obtained by The Associated Press on Wednesday, says the high visibility of the event, the presence of dignitaries and the significance of swearing in the country's first black president make the inauguration vulnerable to attacks.

What concerns analysts most, the report says, is the potential use of improvised explosive devices, a hostage situation or suicide bombers.

While security will be tight around the U.S. Capitol, the joint FBI and Homeland Security assessment says nearby hotels, public gatherings, restaurants and roads could be vulnerable to some kind of attack.

Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff said security concerns during inaugurations have been elevated since the 2001 terror attacks. "I think it will be the most security, as far as I'm aware, that any inauguration has had," Chertoff said in an interview with the AP.

Chertoff also said there is no specific intelligence pointing to terrorist plots during the event.

"We have scrubbed very hard to look at anything that would suggest a credible, imminent threat or one that was specifically focused on the inauguration," Chertoff said, though not referring to the intelligence assessment. "We're not, at this point, aware of a credible, specific, imminent threat that would affect the inauguration."

The Secret Service, which is in charge of the overall security for the event, announced Wednesday that bridges into Washington and about 3.5 square miles of the downtown will be closed on Jan. 20. The security perimeter covers more of the city than previous inaugurations.

The analysis says that threats against Obama have increased since he was elected, which also poses concern for the inauguration.

According to the intelligence assessment, a so-called lone wolf poses the greatest threat during the inauguration because such criminals are generally not affiliated with any specific group or act without the direction of a group. There have been some lone wolf threats reported, but nothing points to a well-planned plot, the assessment said.

Officials are concerned about explosives placed in crowded areas and people impersonating emergency and law enforcement officials, but they have no specific information that indicates terrorists are planning to do this, the assessment said.

While intelligence officials have seen no credible threats to the event from international terrorists or domestic terrorists, al-Qaida and its affiliates remain a threat to U.S. interests within the country and abroad, and the significance of Obama's presidency raises the potential threat from hate groups.

Is it wrong to hope, that if there has to be an attack, it comes during the invocation???

No story here folks. Just fear mongering to increase/maintain bloated civil service budgets. Are we in a color "red" state of alert or a color "orange" state of alert?

Folks need to study Presidential assasinations more. Do you honestly believe THEY would let the $100 million dollar man run for office, win the office, and then take him out? They couldve' done it in Iowa or NH for cripes sake. And the Terrerist worries? No worries. We have a football/basketball/baseball game in 25 cities per week with over 20K people in attendance and GHETTO security. Boo-ya, theres your terror target.

The Obama administration's pledge to less aggressively monitor terrorist should have produced enough goodwill that there is no longer any need to fear an attack...I mean the only issue they ever had with us was that George Bush was president....right?

NO they have always been around the problem is that Bush Let them get through they never managed to hit the US on such a scale until Bush. Folks just want to somehow forget that 911 could have been prevented and 911 happened because Bush ignored Intelligence report that said they were going to attack using airplanes.

Somehow ... as crazy and naive as it may sound ... I want to believe that even the terrorists have hope in an Obama presidency!

I don't believe the terrorists hate the American PEOPLE, as Bush and his crowd tried to make us believe. They hate the American GOVERNMENT, and by targeting innocent civilians in America and our allies, they are indirectly assaulting the American government that represents us. I'm sure that in many ways, they fear Obama, because they know that Obama will not relent in his duty to protect America and to destroy those who want to hurt America. But in some ways, they also have to know that Obama will not uphold the Bush policies, and the policies of some of our former Presidents, which have brought so much suffering and destruction to their homeland. I don't know ... I guess I'm being a bit idealistic, but I believe that even the terrorists know that Obama will make a positive difference in their lives, or in the lives of their people, just as he will make a positive difference in ours. At least, that's my hope!

I agree. I was on the parade route during Clinton's 1993 inauguration and he and Gore both stepped out of their limos at one point and walked down the street. As much as I admire Obama and would love the sight of him being with "the people," I do not want to see him and his family exiting the armored limo anywhere along the parade. Better safe than sorry.

In 2004, they announced that Bush's inauguration would be a big terrorist target.

So of course Obama's would be a bigger target. I am sure that the security people are up to it though.

For those who have visited the Capital in the last eight years (since 9/11), our Capital has been turned into an extreme example of over reach and security excess fostered by a campaign of fear and terrorists behind every monument, statue and park. Everyone quickly justifies this overwhelming use of force, street barriers, armed guards by reminding us frightfully of 9/11. But in truth, it's become an overburden cost of government and no one seems willing to ask, when is enough?

Bush has used fear of terrorism very effectively to control the populace, after all who would challenge all these excessive needs to protect us, questioning it was deemed being unpatriotic.

I'm hoping that President-elect Obama will free us from these shackles of fear and bring some sanity to how we protect our Capital; however, there will be fierce resistance from this newly formed and entrenched "terror industry."

AMEN TO THIS POST.

And in the spirit of Dealy Plaza, if there is ANY TYPE of 'strangeness' which
occurs during Obama's inauguration it will be REBUTTABLY PRESUMED BY THIS
AMERICAN CITIZEN TO BE THE SOLE WORK OF MEMBERS OF THE US GOVERNMENT
AND PRIVATE ENTITIES who would prefer Obama not be allowed his chance to
make the change he wishes to (and perhaps with an assist from one of our 'friends')..........

NOT ..........REPEAT 100 TIMES.....NOT the work of scapegoats, 'terrorists' (whether they
have names or not), mentally unstable loners, lone nuts, individuals unduly wishing to
impress a celebrity, racists (Southern or otherwise), Aryan nation types, members of Muslim.
Islamic, troubled students, members of environmental, peace or animal rights groups, former government scientists in sudden mid-life crisis or over-the-top frustrated postal workers. Obama had just better have the smoothest next 4-8 years of any President ever born.

Your post reminds me of what both Obama and Michelle said: They want to make the White House more accessible to the American people. I don't know if this means removing all the barricades, etc., but let's hope so.
