WASHINGTON — Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid says Roland Burris will not likely take Barack Obama's Senate seat until a court in Illinois rules on a dispute surrounding his appointment.

While Reid embraced Burris, he said the Senate is awaiting a court ruling in a case that tests whether the signature of the Illinois secretary of state is needed for Burris to take the seat. He suggested that would be a step toward seating Burris.

"One of the first things he said to us was, 'Hey, this is nothing racial, do you understand that?'" Reid said. "A lot of people tried to make this a racial issue. Roland Burris has not, and will not."

"He's not trying to avoid any responsibility to hide anything," Reid added.

Sen. Dick Durbin of Illinois, who also met with Burris, praised the man and said he hoped the legal matters would be resolved "so we can fill all the vacancies and have a full compliment of the Senate."

"That decision will be before the Illinois Supreme Court today or tomorrow. We are hoping that they act on it in an expedited fashion. I called the Attorney General of Illinois, Lisa Madigan, yesterday, as well as the Secretary of State, and urged them not to delay the decision," Durbin said. "Whatever the decision of the Supreme Court, we want it to be made on a timely basis, and we both agreed that was their intent as well."

Democrats had claimed the appointment was tainted by allegations that Illinois Gov. Rod Blagojevich attempted to sell the seat.

my fellow prisoners,
will we ever be allowed to comment on I and P, or is the 1st amendment still under review?

I got that story, too. No, technical snafu -- I'm not stoopid, even though Africans and Jamaicans, think I am (inside joke).

Anything to do with I&P is moderated due to the "OMGDAJEWS" crowd that always spam the threads. The 1st Amendment doesn't apply to you or I posting here, only that Huffington can create the site.

So now (Ill. Sec. of State) Jesse White's little "I won't sign as a protest" stunt is holding everything up.

I think he thought he was doing Senate Democrats (Reid especially) a favor. Now, he is being repaid by being thrown under the bus by Reid.

What good does that favor do them if they don't give the non-signature as a reason?

Ok. Burris got his invite.

Now he's being regifted to Illinois.

He's crashing and bumming out the enthusiasm of the Inauguration.

Party pooper.

Wait a minute...I'm not fan of Reid, but I think he's trying to avoid further lawsuits. You just know some fool would file if Burris was seated w/out Jesse White's signing off on the matter...like that fool who filed challenging Obama's citizenship. White should sign off, Burris can be seated, and if he sucks it's his problem to convince the people of IL (who've said no to him plenty in the past) to vote for him again.

The fugging Democrats have no spine any other time, but yeah, BUT why not get a spine and grow some b*alls when it comes to shutting out the only Black senator. Now, that we can do!

Blago's in office.

He is within the law to appoint Burris.

And the law should be upheld.

The issue is not the color of Burris's skin. The issue is the color of the streak running down Reid's back--YELLOW! Had he been half as tough on Republicans (not a one of whom deserves a scintilla of respect) as he is now being on members of his own party, Bush would be hiding out on his "ranch" in Paraguay today.

ZHarris3,
Harry Reid was pressuring Blago to stiff three (3) Black men in one swoop. I am sorry, but that surely smells to me. His subtle prejudice is same suffered by Hillary Clinton in the primaries; their belief that White folks as a rule, not the fluke of Barack Obama, will not got for the Black guy. He obvious seemed to forget that Illinois gave us the first and ONLY Black female U.S. Senator. Nevertheless, he suffers from is as do most Whites, as they know deep in their hearts how they capable and competent they believe the average Black to be or not be.

This is my opinion and it’s not going to change, since I have not been given any reason to think otherwise.

"In an interview with Politico Tuesday afternoon, Reid said Feinstein was right that Obama should have consulted senators before picking Leon Panetta to lead the CIA. But, he added, "I think you need better reasons for coming out against somebody than somebody didn't call you.""

I agree, Harry. But, what was your reason for coming out and saying you will NOT seat Burris? Obviously, you didn't have a reason, which is why you changed course and decided to seat him.

Of course you're right. I was thinking along another line here, maybe Reid & Pelosi started reading the blogs and found out where they stand with progressives and are trying to recuperate their standings

They would much better read the Illinois state and U.S. constitutions. We are, after all, a nation of laws - at least, that's what Reid keeps saying, and as an ex prosecutor, he should've known better.

I've always known our P.E. supported Burris and Blagojevich's right to appoint him (although he personally, might not have liked it). Obama is, after all, a Constitutional attorney/professor. Who better than he, from the great State of Illinois, knows its Constitution most likely from front to back?

I think Obama initially agreed with Reid because he needs his help to get his policies through. Reid can prove difficult for our 44th President.

Why oh why is our party saddled with Harry Reid?
The first decision of his new "term" (oh kill me now would you?)
and he can't get it right.

Seems he only chastises Democrats but lawbreaking by republicans is overlooked or embraced by him.
