Sanjay Gupta Problem: Paul Krugman

I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Lest you think the appointment of dreamboat doctor Sanjay Gupta as Surgeon General was going to be all peaches and cream, direct your attention today to the New York Times Paul Krugman, who reminds his readers of the famous beef that Gupta got into with documentary filmmaker Michael Moore over his movie, Sicko:

You don't have to like Moore or his film; but Gupta specifically claimed that Moore "fudged his facts", when the truth was that on every one of the allegedly fudged facts, Moore was actually right and CNN was wrong.

What bothered me about the incident was that it was what Digby would call Village behavior: Moore is an outsider, he's uncouth, so he gets smeared as unreliable even though he actually got it right. It's sort of a minor-league version of the way people who pointed out in real time that Bush was misleading us into war are to this day considered less "serious" than people who waited until it was fashionable to reach that conclusion. And appointing Gupta now, although it's a small thing, is just another example of the lack of accountability that always seems to be the rule when you get things wrong in a socially acceptable way.

I did like Moore's film, up to a point -- specifically the point at which I was presented with the thought exercise that I could have good universal health care if I was willing to live like a Cuban, a premise that a) I am not prepared to accept and b) undermined the logical point of highlighting the health management success of places like Canada and England. But I am with Krugman on "getting things wrong in a socially acceptable way." It is, for example, the inane belief of Ruth Marcus that torture is the sort of thing an upright citizen can also get "wrong in a socially acceptable way." This, too, is a premise I am not prepared to accept!

In reviving the Gupta/Moore tiff, Krugman's point might have been better served if he had delved into the facts of the dispute, which was resolved when CNN issued various retractions and Moore called a truce. For the thorough exegesis of the spat, I direct your attention to our own Rachel Sklar, who gave a detailed accounting of the matter back in July of 2007 -- which I assure you, I could not improve upon, beginning with the first line: "Does it compromise my journalistic objectivity to say that Dr. Sanjay Gupta is a dick?"

IMHO, just about every one of Obama's picks is horrible. Especially Rahm Emanuel and Dennis Ross. Both are more worried about Israel than the USA.

Sanjay comes across as very fake and very corporate. Why is he acting like such a politician when he is just a tv schlub. He reminds me of Romney. Please don't allow that fool to be our next surgeon general.

Do my eyes deceive me? Are there Obama supporters here who are actually questioning and criticizing one of his decisions before he even takes office? I thought you all trusted him to make decisions for this country based on his wisdom, intelligence, experience, etc.! Is that undying faith of yours in Obama beginning to waiver now?

I am an Obama supporter and can confidently say that we don't/won't follow lockstep a la the Repuke dittoheads who screech "TREASON" whenever someone dares disagree with the dear leader.

I am disappointed in minutiae such as this Gupta choice (if he really is selected) and the Rick Warren invocation, and even Hillary as SoS, but so far Obama is still far ahead of the knuckle-draggin' low-IQ Repubs.

Did you vote this last election, whatevah? Cuz I didn't know they let 12 year olds vote...

See, this is something you and the rest of the neo-con pinheads can't seem to grasp-- we can still have loyalty to our elected offcials and STILL question their choices. See, that's something GROWN UPS DO. You know what immaturity is? Seeing the world in black and white. If you disagree with someone, that means you automatically have to cut off all ties with them and beat your chest and scream to the skies what an a**hole they are. If Obama makes a cabinet choice I don't agree with, suddenly my loyalty has been dashed against the rocks and I've been played?

The GOP is run by children now. That's too bad, it wasn't such a bad little party when it started out.

Gupta is nothing more than a slick talking head these days. I am not sure he is the best choice - but - it's not my choice to make nor is it the choice of the ppl either. There is always something wrong with the choice of Surgeon General, the mass populace doesn't have a medical degree but love to make medical decisions (based on morals?!?) - imagine if a Doctor were to tell ppl that mas tur bation was healthy ...oh yeah ...right one did and was summarily FIRED - leave health matters to medical doctors and Dr. Gupta to CNN.

clearly this post has no point ppl - it is a rant of no consequence - peace

Let's face it. What Gupta hates about socialized medicine is that doctors can't make as much money.

I don't think the Gupster met a corporation he didn't like. He is part of the mindset that tells us all bad health comes from individual choices, not corporate greed, lack of oversight, and the despicable state our of our food, water and drug delivery systems. Will he walk on the Obama side of the street which, I hope, includes the massive reshaping of US health care?

Will the Obama team start to pander to the center-left, we who elected him? When is someone going to start placating me????

The point of Cuba in the movie was to show that
EVEN "lowly" Cuba helps the sick better than the USA.

The point of Cuba in the movie was that Cuba's HEALTH POLICIES are better than the USA's.

These policies have the same positive effect on its people
as they do in Europe and Canada.

Accepting a Cuban standard of living was NOT the point.
A HUGE logical STRETCH.

Exactly. Gupta uses the fake journalism trick of creating the unstated assumption that if one minor detail can be shown to be arguable, then the whole argument is wrong. Transparently mendacious.

I completely agree. That part was just plain silly. The point wasn't that we must live in 3rd world conditions to get free health care, it's that even countries LIVING in 3rd world conditions get better health care than rich fat-ass Americans.

Why do these people get PAID to write this drivel?

Gupta is clearly a very slick doctor, and I just can't see him stepping on corporate toes. I get the feeling he is going to be very receptive to the insurance industry. I bet they are rooting for him...

Rachel, you cannot compromise non-existent integrity, so you are safe. Would it compromise my journalistic integrity to say that you are a hole waiting for a dick?

So let me get this straight. As near as I can tell, all this "controversy" over Gupta is based on his:

A - Having the audacity to publicly disagree with Michael Moore.
B - Having the audacity to prefer science over quackery.
C- Being an effective, practiced, and comfortable public speaker.

Boy. I can see how these would be unwelcome traits.

Obama should consider someone truly qualified, like Deepak Chopra.

No its about Gupta being a mouthpiece for the insurance and the drug companies and not being totally honest in his interview with Michael Moore and for an administration to have him in that position when he is so obviously against universal healthcare is obscene

It is simply a question of WHERE Gupta stands on health care reform. If he is on the side of the large corporate interests then reject him. If he wants lower fees and lower costs for healthcare then accept him.

A simple operation with a couple day stay can cost $150,000 and that is insane!

The idea that healthcare reform is simply having the government take over the job the corporations are doing now misses the point that our COST in America are out of control because of the same GREED Wall Street has done to get us into this CRISIS.

Like the Congressional Republicans said in the Auto Bailout, "Declare Bankruptcy and Force all the providers and payers to come to the table and everyone has to give up a LOT!" Then we can succeed with a lower overall COST!

But how do you arrive at lower costs?

Raising taxes to fund a socialized system just means working Americans will pay ,ore upfront to the Fed. That is bad for everyone.

The best way to lower costs is to make everyone a participant in their health care. Sp if I have to shop around for a doctor who is cost effective, that saves everyone money. It will force doctors and hospitals to ,oderate costs and be competitive. And, the insurance companies will not be forced to cover inflated prices on simple procedures, which is what drives up insurance costs now.

We have to say good bye to the days when no one cared how much things cost simply because they were ¨covered¨.

I would take a 5k deductible anyday before I would want 25% of my income taken to cover a socialized medical system. Remember; that would be on top of income taxes!!

If the 'middle man' (insurance companies) were taken out of the equation, then we might have more affordable health care.

Yes for Deepak Chopra--much better choice. Despite having some lightweight New Age beliefs.

Most of the people protest Gupta because of opposition to the c.ult of celebrity infecting our society form top to bottom.
Gupta, C.Kennedy, Reagan, Schwarzenegger, Ventura, Franken. This is getting ridiculous.

Actually, regarding cult of celebrity, I take issue with Al Franken. In his books, he takes the time to research issues and has done enough blowback against Rush, et al. He knows how to dig into issues.

This would be a horrible way to allay the criticisms of a celebrity Presidency. While he's at it, I have some other equally ridiculous suggestions:

Judge Joe Brown for the Supreme Court
Wolf Blitzer in charge of the FCC
Jim Cramer could head the Securities and Exchange Commission
The Count (Sesame Street) in charge of the GAO
Director of the Office of Management and Budget- Drew Carey (or Bob Barker)
NSA Director: Kiefer Sutherland
FEC Commissioner: Bulwor... I mean, Warren Beatty
FDA: Martha Stewart
Postmaster General: John Ratzenberger
DEA: David Caruso
INS: Carlos Mencia
ATF: Robert Downey Jr.
National Parks and Wildlife: Ted Nugent

There are many doctors in my family including some famous ones and my mother use to say that they liked playing God. I was reminded of that when I saw Gupta help perform some operations in some war zones-I realize that doctors have to gear themselves for tragedy and try to mask their feelings about people dying on the operating table -well lets say Gupta masked his feelings very well. Couple that with the Michaeal Moore interview I see MONEY MONEY MONEY not COMPASSION

When you wonder why a poorer country than the Us the UK has a survival rate higher than the US for its children then maybe you should really look at what is happening around you rather than blindly saluting the American flag as if the US is infallible in every thing that it does.
