One New Year's Day, on the brink of my fiftieth year, I took stock of my life--and the tally was grim. I was alone after a long marriage, seemingly doomed to perpetual house rental, and separated from the spiritual community that had once sustained me. Though skeptical of "create your own reality" thinking, I launched a year-long experiment in wishing--to see if there was, indeed, any power in "putting it out there," as so many people proclaim. It wasn't easy, but I forced myself to suspend my doubts and go for it all: a new love, a healed soul, and the sweet stucco house of my dreams.

Over the course of the year, I was amazed to discover that all three of my wishes really did come true--in ways that met, subverted, and overflowed my expectations. Based on the experiences recounted in my new book "The Wishing Year," here's how to launch your own year of wishing.

Can we please make a distinction between the simple sense of felt desire as a prelude to getting what you want, versus the nonsense that is called "create your own reality"?

Getting in touch with what we really want, focusing on it, and taking action steps gives you a higher PROBABILITY of getting what you want than not doing anything. This isn't wisdom - it's just how things are.

But the idea that you can "create your own reality" like THE SECRET teaches - and nothing can stop it from maifesting - well, that's just metaphysical childishness.

Oprah - for example - is a big believer (and promoter) of THE SECRET. And yet she finds herself unhappily fat, again. I'm not knocking her for putting on the weight - but simply demonstrating that there is no guaranteed Aladin's lamp here.

The world is complex, and we are complex as well. How about we honor the complexity and honor our legitimate desires as well, and leave childish fantasy behind.
