Lindsay Lohan: I Work As Hard As Scarlett Johansson

Lindsay Lohan gave an interview to Lauren Hutton in the February issue of Interview, and bemoaned the state of her career and the poor film educations of youth today.

On not getting the same opportunities as other actresses: "But it's so impossible for me to actually [go someplace where no one knows me]. When I was in Dubai, there was still press lined up around the hotel. So I find it close to impossible to actually do that. I mean, it is what it is. This is what I asked for, and in this day and age that's what actually goes on. But what hurts me the most is that I work just as hard as any other actress around my age, like Scarlett Johansson, but I just don't get the opportunities that they get because people are so distracted by the mess that I created in my life. But that doesn't mean it's going to last forever.

On being in Hollywood to act, not to become a celebrity: "I just feel as though it's become a situation where people have manifested this caricature of who I am, and they act as if there's no real person inside of it. I mean, people really have come to believe-directors, producers, agents, whoever it may be-that I started in this because I wanted to be a celebrity. But that was never my intention."

On the public misconception of her and the lack of knowledge about film: "I wanted to be a movie star [growing up]. But movie stars are not what they used to be. When I was a kid, I thought movie stars were women and men who were in these great films that we still look at now. But I don't think there are too many films coming out these days that we're going to look at in the future and say, 'This is one of the great ones.' Like, what is the great film that I will tell my children about? I'm still going to tell them about the old films, the Hitchcock films. And people my age don't even know who those people are. I can't even have a conversation with most people of my generation about that, because they'd be like, 'Okay, she's a freak. Something's wrong with her.'

Speaking of Scarlett Johansson, it was reported last year that Lohan once scrawled "Scarlett is a cunt" on a bathroom wall.

What a shame. I saw her in Mean Girls and knew she would only go up. She worked hard to make people dislike her, it appears. Now I have her on a list of people I used to love but I'm not interested in seeing anymore like Swartznegger and Mel Gibson

I've never seen a Lohan flick because I take film seriously enough that I wouldn't bother. I only clicked on this article because she's hot. :)

BUT

She takes ownership of "the mess that she created" and that deserves credit. She also makes an extraordinarily valid point talking about the state of movies today, at least in terms of the mainstream films. Hollywood has always produced junk, but it also used to produce many quality films. Think Cool Hand Luke. Think Rebel Without A Cause. Even blockbusters like the original Indiana Jones movies were quite stellar. Now, everything is either a remake, an adaptation of a bad TV show, or formulaic. There are still good blockbusters, such as The Dark Knight, but the best of today's films are either indie or foreign. I was quite surprised that Lindsay Lohan, someone I dismissed long ago as a pretty, empty headed hack would make this distinction. Perhaps if she cleans herself up she can become a respected thespian (though I am not holding my breath).

This has got to be a mistake. Lindsey and Scarletts names mentioned in the same sentence?
Lindsey is soooooooo beneath Scarlett in everyway. Scarlett is a professional. It shows in her work as well as her life. Lindsey needs to grow up, to be treated like a grown up.

Actually, I am not a huge fan of Scarlett myself (maybe because she seemed to be so overused by Woody Allen). However, I would definitely consider her an A-lister. Lindsay's main problem is even when she is on her best behavior and doing the absolute best acting job she can she is a B-lister, and when she is out partying all night, trying to get her name in the tabloids and using her relationships for PR, she looks more like a histrionic attention-seeking high schooler than a serious actress.

No, I sorta agree with you. She has talent and looks. She just needs some maturity and professionalism. She needs to get out of the celebrity light and away from tabloid journalists.

I agree with you both. And her words show that she is capable of reflection, even if she doesn't take it as deeply as she needs to yet to grow up fully (if that's possible for anyone). It isn't so much that she is beneath Scarlett Johansson, it's more that Scarlett is an unrealistic yardstick for comparison. The person who mentioned Drew Barrymore had it right. I see a lot of similarities, and although not every performance of hers is of equal caliber, Drew has proven to be a likable enough celebrity entity once she got through her post adolescent party-til-­you're-bey­ond-stupid phase. In other words, if Lindsey survives the next few years, I suspect she'll actually stand a good chance of turning out cool.

Her one real plus was her striking resemblance to Ann-Margret. However, she doesn't appear to have the brainpower to match. It's like smoke and mirrors.

One of the biggest drags she has on her "career" (whatever her potential might be) is her mother Dina. Something about that whole relationship and Dina's behavior is creepy. She always sounds as if she's p imping out her kids--you get the feeling that she is pushing their careers to line her own bank account, and get narcissistic supply through people paying attention to her family.

No you don't Lindsay, you have been fired from movies for being late to set, and you have been fired from "Ugly Betty" for being essentially getting into fights with the cast. Unlike Scarlett, you go out clubbing every night, you start fights and and unlike ScarJo you have no career like at all.

First I actually think she is a pretty good actress. Second every film she is on turns into a circus. The studio president of one of her movies wrote an open letter telling her to get her act together. That was a new one on me. I've never seen that before or since. She is apparently a nightmare to work with, She got booted off of Ugly Betty, weeks early... oh my god, I can't believe I actually know all of this I think this is the first sign of the apocalypse. Arghhhhhhhh
