LOL...That's just cruel. I'll bet the kid doesn't even learn HOW to spell that until the age of 10.

This name is not cruel at all. There are billions of people in the world with names that do not sound familiar to western ears, but that doesn't mean their parents were cruel.

All children learn to spell their own names.

The fact that this is considered newsworthy is proof of the existence of cultural chauvinism and Eurocentrism.

I have heard names like this for a long time, having lived in Atlanta but what winds up here are the kids are given nicknames like "boo-boo, little man, hollywood" and the like. I had a housekeeper who could not even spell her children's names, oh those had nicknames also. Not strange to me.

Just another hollywood star doing something outrageous to get our attention. I would rather the has-beens just fade away.

Caroline Kennedy's son: John Bouvier Kennedy Schlossberg
Arnold & Maria's son: Christopher Sargent Shriver Schwarzenegger

Do these kids really use their full names? NOT even for a driver's license, passport, etc!
I think the criticism here is over Lisa B & nothing else! If Jason Momoa's wife was whoever, you'd all comment on the coolness, unquieness, blah, blah,blah..

And no, I did not watch Crosby - never really cared much for it!

Exactly. As in the comment above comparing this name to ethnic names and ethnic nicknames in Atlanta. It's a fantastic name actually - much better than Apple...

YES! Nakoa's name is much better than "Apple"!! Wonder if she'll get any "rotten" or "core" remarks.

" Caroline Kennedy's son: John Bouvier Kennedy Schlossberg
Arnold & Maria's son: Christopher Sargent Shriver Schwarzenegger "

Just as snooty. Just as burdensome.

Here, try this; you've got a Russian heritage, but for a few generations now your family
has been living and breeding in the USA; But name your baby this:

"Dmitriy Vladimir Olegovich Vyacheslav "

Why not? Completely respectable assembly of Russian names... each quite traditional, too.
No one in Russia (or who speaks Russian) would have a problem with that name....
What?? It's ridiculous you say? Yeah, I thought so too. The culture or language of origin has nothing to do with [my opinion about Lisa's choice]; a burdensome name is a burdensome name.

Don't think the any of the discussed names are burdensome. These are their names, nothing else - those of us with odd names often cherish them.

'czew' in a Polish name is roughly pronounced CHESS! I come from a family of ski(s), witz(es), zik(s) & so on.
Having a Prussian (German) surname, which I love, there was always difficulty. My father's name was Max - German pronounciation; Mox. He got Motts, Motz, Motzy....It's was funny so we thought!
Now I have trouble with my married, Chinese last name - FOUR letters!
If the name is not Smith, Jones, etc... there seems to be axniety on the part of others.
Doesn't matter the amount of letters!

At first glance I thought what a stupid thing to do. Why? Because in spite of us all wanting to be unique and special we also want to belong. Hence, commonplace names for all us Smiths, Joneses, Bush's, etc. But then we get a kid whose name is going to mean something. It will set him apart and make him different and yes he will get ridiculed but having the "right" name has ever saved anyone from ridicule and bullies! If his parents are good they will raise him to appreciate his name, to be proud of it and live up to its traditons. How many Tiffanys, Raymonds, Georges, or even Ronalds, which is my name, know what it means and where it came from? (I do!)

My congratulations to the parents for the wonderful forsight for giving the best gift of all, a meaningful name, but really,,,,,Wolf?

John and Jane Does of America,

A little bit of racial tolerance on the eve of our first Black President's inauguration please. Long names are common in Hawaiian. The last two monarchs - Kalakaua and Liliuokalani (shortened versions of their full and proper names) - were descendants of Lonoikamakahiki Kaiimamao. It's a traditional celebration of ancestry and lineage. Part of the child's name - Namakaeha, is his father's middle name. Anyone run around calling Jason Momoa "Jason Namakaeha Momoa"?

Of course she isn't going to use the full name on a regular basis. Does anyone use their full name on a regular basis? They will likely call him Nakoa - a common and beautiful Hawaiian name.

Thank you so much for educating us on this. I can't stand it when people jump to criticize when they know nothing of the history and the tradition with naming children in other cultures.

Wow! There are some miIitant folks on this thread.

I named my son in honor of his heritage as well - however, I tried to be cognizant of his future with that name. I found it difficult to choose a unique boy's name, so I understand her challenge.

That being said, this is a bit over the top. It's like she couldn't decide what she liked so she included everything on the list. I feel sorry for every form he'll have to fill out, every ID he'll need, practicing his name in school, etc.

I think it's less about giving the son a strong name than it is the mother's narcissistic needs.

and you deduced this as mother's narcissistic needs ?

I don't know, I kinda agree, in a way. Let's face it, a child's name has NOTHING to do with him, and everything to do with his parents. I'm all for uniqueness and heritage, but it just seems like they're trying too hard. Unless they live in Hawaii, there are going to be some problems, If you care about your kid, it might pay to be at least a little "cognizant of his future with that name."

Good luck filling out a Scantron sheet with that mile-long name.
And enjoy spelling your name for EVERYONE.
Thanks, mom and dad!

Also, "Nakoa Momoa"??
