Looks like she honored and respected her child's father's cultural naming practices.

It's what heppens when self-absorbed parents pick a name for their own ego-driven desires and not child's sake. How selfish.

Or, you know, when parents pick a name to honor the child's cultural heritage.

I personally love names that have meaning. Names with a meaning are rich and powerful to the person who holds it. Theie name is more than just a title. Who cares if he has a long name, no one goes by their full name.

I give Fiona Apple every right to name her album a run-on sentence with over 400 characters. I also reserve the right to think it's annoying and pretentious to do so. Further, I encourage everyone to bypass that annoying pretentiousness by refering to said album by a shortcut such as "When the Pawn...".

Nevertheless, I still intend to name my first-born Androclese Herculaneum.

Okay at first I thought those names were out there, but now since I know they are Hawaiian names its more understandable.

The ignorance and racism here agaisnt Hawaiians is truly disgusting. It's this kind of ignorance and elitist kind of attitude that gets tourists and visitors beaten up when they come to Hawaii. Hawaiian names are beautiful and poetic. Even though I was born and raised on the mainland, I have lived the last 15 years in Hawaii where I got married and built a family and I am never leaving! I was fortunate to be given a Hawaiian name back in college by a local man I worked with we called "Uncle Sam". He called me Kaleohooluolupuuwai which he told me meant "voice that soothes the savage heart" because of my ability to calm down our clients in the program who had rage issues.
I say congrats to Lisa and Jason on the birth of their baby and kudos for giving the baby a name that connects him to his Hawaiian roots.

Is there anything in my post that indicates rage of any kind? Of course not. You're simply trying to create an issue where there is none by making an irresponsible implication. Typical liberal strategy.

I'm actually a little amazed at the amount of ignorance going on in this thread. Even though I don't know why I am given I'm a half Hawaiian with a 13 letter middle name who grew up in Oklahoma. Fear and disdain for the different will always be around I guess.

Oh my gods! Fear and disdain? Preju.dice and bi.goty? Lack of cultural tolerance??

Jumpin Jackrabbits people -- it's a kid's name and some of us think it's too long, too pretentious and merely a ploy for attention from Lisa Bonet [who already has the reputation for being 'odd' and attention seeking] ... why turn it into "fear and disdain" of differences and a lack of cultural tolerance? Please! It is what it is. Talk about making a mountain out of a molehill. So some people don't like it, Big Deal. Does that warrent name calling, accusations and intolerance from those that do?

As far as I can see, not one single person who commented in any sort of serious manner is saying they hate the same ONLY because it's Hawaiian. It's a big long pretentious made up name from a kook of a C-list celebrity who is known for her [ahem] eccentricities. Talk about playing the race card and being ultra sensitive and Too Too "PC"!
Get over it.

Again - you think it is too long because you are judging by American culture. Many people in Hawai'i have long names.

From Wikipedia:
"Genuine Hawaiian names are unisex. Their meanings are often symbolic. Mist and coolness symbolize happiness in a warm climate. Lei means a child, because a beloved child is carried like a lei on the parent's shoulders. Lei is also the word for "gift". A child can also be a flower or a bud, regardless of its sex. "

Here is a common name (I'll break it up into words but it would usually be written without breaks): Ka maka na makamae mai ka lani

Lisa's babies name is odd because it is a jumble of words without meaning as a phrase - hence the importance of having a native speaker name your child.

Er, if I'm the one making a mountain out of a mole hill, then why are you the one writing a multi-paragraph rant at me when I just wrote a mildly perturbed observation? You're free to call the name pretentious as often as you want, while I can say certain comments mocking the name of a kid without even acknowledging the cultural background of the kid's father - smacks a bit of xenophobia. Because guess what? It does.

Pretentious??
Sounds like the "name" Fabulous at 52 is more than a bit pretentious!!

father's full name: Joseph Jason Namakaeha Momoa. It's been shortened!
Ever read any "unshortened" Spanish names - 2-3 first names/2 surnames. Sometimes more.
How 'bout some of those East Indian names. I could go on!

The kid's name is just fine.

BTW; indigenous Hawaiians/Polynesians aren't a "race" of people, they're a cultural, ethnic group of people. ??Race card??

So "fear" and "disdain" are name calling? Anyone on this thread with a problem with the name is a racist dog. They think the name is 'Pretentious" because they do not have any history of name calling except "what the F***!

You have no culture, no class. Apart from hog calling that is......suuuuuuuey!
