I Like ItI Don’t Like It

As the Journal previewed Wednesday night, Macy's this morning announced the closing of 11 stores, a move that came after a rough holiday season. Macy's also said Thursday that same-store sales for December fell 4%, amid what it called "the most challenging economic environment in memory." Here's the list of the store locations Macy's is closing:

-- Ernst & Young Plaza (Citicorp Plaza), Los Angeles (135,000 square feet; 136 employees; opened in 1986)
-- The Citadel, Colorado Springs, Colo. (195,000 square feet; 105 employees; opened in 1984)
-- Westminster Mall, Westminster, Colo. (156,000 square feet; 110 employees; opened in 1986)
-- Palm Beach Mall, West Palm Beach, Fla. (190,000 square feet; 71 employees; opened in 1979)
-- Mauna Lani Bay Hotel, Island of Hawaii (3,000 square feet; 3 employees; opened in 1983)
-- Lafayette Square, Indianapolis (160,000 square feet; 84 employees; opened in 1974)
-- Brookdale Center, Brooklyn Center, Minn. (195,000 square feet; 72 employees; opened in 1966)
-- Crestwood Mall, St. Louis (166,000 square feet; 176 employees; opened in 1969)
-- Natrona Heights Plaza, Natrona Heights, Pa. (73,000 square feet; 124 employees; opened in 1956)
-- Century III Furniture and Clearance, West Mifflin, Pa. (83,000 square feet; 3 employees; opened in 2000)

Macy's will NEVER be accepted here in the Chicago area. Macy's is losing tens of millions of dollars at the former Marshall Field's store locations. Macy's on State Street is a ghost town. If Marshall Field's is brought back, shoppers will return in DROVES.

Chicagoans will continue to boycott Macy's until Marshall Field's is brought back in name AND quality. To Macy's shareholders, please dump your current leadership before your stock is worth $0.00 per share.

The boycott is working!

How soon does Macys close all of its stores? This could be the start of phased closing, something like a dozen a month. Then it's good bye Macys.

The Crestwood closing is not a surprise to me. That mall is older and is competing with 2 other mega malls in the same area. Its oversaturation. I hope that folks will find work at one of the other Macy's.

I am sorry for them fellow citizens working Macy's who are not losing their jobs. It is a terrible thing and I am afraid that this could lead to a social disorder is things continue to be so bleak. Hang in on out there fellas, hopefully this new administration will turn things around for the better.

At 60 bucks for a pair of shorts, no wonder.

Even the rich people are not that careless anymore.

I am not surprised that Macy's is closing stores. They bought out Federation and acquired a number of stores here in Southern California, including Robinsons May, Bullocks and the Broadway. Those stores were good stores with merchandise that sold. The problem with Macys is their clothes are from back East - they never catered to the kinds of clothes that people wear in Southern California. It's very different. I was in a couple of their stores a few years ago and I found no clerks handy, no help if you couldn't find a particular dress or suit, and very high prices. No wonder they are closing some stores in Southern California. I'm sorry about the one downtown. That used to the flagstore store of The Broadway Stores. I remember when it was built. Kohls came out here from Wisconsin and built a number of new stores. They had problems in the beginning because their clothes were from the midwest and wouldn't sell in Southern California. As soon as they changed to Southern California style of clothes, they started to make money. I'm hopeful that they stay because its a nice store, far better than Macy's. I have never shopped at any Macy and don't intend to.

Macy's did the same thing to The Bon Marche in Washington state several years ago...The Bon started in Seattle in 1890 and by 2003, it was called Bon-MAcy's...now it's just macy's. The store usually seems pretty empty and not many employees left, but the ones who are there are nice. I agree with you about not being able to find any clothes...but honestly I think it might just be me. I don't have any sense of style anymore and when we go shopping together, my adult daughters usually chuckle when I ask them if they like something I pick. I'm glad to see they're not closing stores in Seattle.

They did the same to us in Philadelphia. First it was John Wanamaker's, then Lord & Taylor's and now Macy's. Gobble, gobble, gobble only works for so long...just ask our government.

I've been to the Macy's in the West Palm Beach Mall -- what a dump!
There is another Macy's a few miles nearby in a "nicer" section of West Palm Beach -- I bet most of these stores were acquired by Federated when they bought out the May company's stores a few years ago. I guess, like drug stores, you can never have too many big box retailers in one small area.

While I'm no big fan of Macy's - they bought out one of my favorite local / regional dept. stores - I have to admit I'm glad ours here in Austin didn't get the ax.
