UPDATE 1/15/09, 1 PM

Vanity Fair has published a list and photo graphic of celebrity inauguration attendees that helps round out anyone missing from ours

The AP put out a story yesterday that gets into more detail about the when and where of celebrity inaugural events.

***

From videos by will.i.am to emails from Scarlett Johansson, Obama has never been hard up for celebrity support. Obama is something of a celebrity in his own right, with enough star power to essentially shut down Washington D.C. because of the huge crowds expected at his inauguration. It's no surprise, then, that a large number of celebrities will there as well.

So which celebs will be there? It would almost be easier to say which ones won't be there. Details of who will be in town --along with sources-- can be found below, and the list will be updated as necessary.

  • The Creative Coalition's inaugural ball will bring plenty of big names to town, with a list of confirmed attendees below.

Tim Daly, Tony Goldwyn, Anne Hathaway, Ron Howard, Spike Lee, Susan Sarandon, Kerry Washington, Dana Delany, Ellen Burstyn, Alan Cumming, Barry Levinson, Alfre Woodard, Josh Lucas, Matthew Modine, Richard Schiff, Connie Britton, Marcia Cross, Maura Tierney, Sue Kramer, Rachael Leigh Cook, Gloria Reuben, Wendie Malick, Adrian Grenier, Keshia Knight Pulliam, Phillip Bloch, Tom Cavanagh, Bradley Cooper, Hill Harper, Ashley Judd, Blair Underwood, Lynn Whitfield, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Peter Sarsgaard, Giancarlo Esposito, Kim Raver, Lawrence O'Donnell, Jane Krakowski, Tamara Tunie and Tom Fontana
    Story continues below

Elvis Costello, Sting and R&B legend Sam Moore will also play at the event

  • Rihanna will be headlining the RIAA and Feeding America charity ball, Access Hollywood reports.
  • Longtime Obama supporter Oprah Winfrey will host an event at the Kennedy Center on election eve, NBC reports.
  • Will Smith and his wife Jada will attend the inauguration, UPI reports
  • Hip-hop will be well represented in DC that night, thanks to the Hip-Hop Summit Action Network's ball, which will feature guests and performers like Russell Simmons, T.I., Young Jeezy and LL Cool J on the eve of the inauguration. Jay-Z recently announced that he would also perform at a party that night.
  • George Lucas will be awarded at the Bits And Bytes Inaugural Ball.
  • The Washington Post reports that Bruce Springsteen will perform on the steps of the Lincoln memorial on a January 18th free welcome event.
  • The American Music Inaugural Balls will bring more big hip-hop names to the city, as the program details:

The event is composed of two parts: the Legends Ball, which Warwick will host, and the Urban Ball, which will see rapper Ludacris at the helm. It will be the first ever two-ball event in inaugural history. Performers include Rodney Atkins, George Clinton, Chaka Khan, Marvin Sapp, the Temptations (with Dennis Edwards), Harold Melvin's Blue Notes, Kirk Franklin, the H.B. Barnum Orchestra, The Caravans, Smokie Norful, T-Pain, David Banner, Athena Cage, Cedric the Entertainer, the Cheetah Girls, Fantasia, Lil Jon, Monica, Bella Steez, and Bobby Valentino.

Craig Grandville wrote; Barack is using an Elvis Presley song during the Inaugral ceremony... Go Barack! It's the beautiful and fitting song ' If I Can Dream. This is a perfect choice considering all that 's going on in the world today.

For me going to the Innaguaration is not worth it. I may watch some on TV but Obama has become like these celebrities. I don't have a TV for a reason. I don't know and don't care to know who these people are. I just hope Obama can help the unemployed people of America. I hope things improve a little for the average person and most get some financial relie, specially the families now on shelters and homeless children. To those going to DC, enjoy and make the best of the circumstances there.

Does anyone remeber Celine Dione and Elvis' duo " If I can Dream'? This should be played at Obamas Inauguration. It is truly fitting! Listen to it on 'Youtube" then you will see what I mean!

I know! I love the Elvis, Celine version of 'If I Can Dream. They could present it with a large background choir for fill. Barack is wise for using that song. Elvis cried when he received news of MLK's assasination. That song was written in 1968 with MLK in mind... I will be looking forward to it during the ceremony... Enjoy!

That sounds great. I am sure that the people on those lists will be driven around in "official" vehicles that will enable them (1) to have a car in the District on the 19th or 20th and (2) to drive in the restricted area around Capitol and White House.

The Huffpo could do a great service to thousands of people who are planning or thinking about coming to Washington next week by being sure they know just how restricted their ability to move around will be.

I understand that most are coming just to "be there," but if they are bringing young children, they should plan carefully unless they have an exorbitantly-priced hotel room. They won't be able to drive into the District beginning on the 19th and if they manage to get a car into town, there will be no place to park. Small rooms in modest hotels that usually go for $200 are already sold out at $800 a nite, but only if you buy the "package" from the 18th through the 21st.

Hotels are full. Restaurants are booked. The area around the Hay Adams/Blair House and WH is already cordoned off.

The security around Obama's person will, quite correctly, be surreal those days. It is unlikely that the Secret Service will even allow you to stand on the street when his motorcades approach, other than along the sold-out parade route where non-ticketed viewing will start to fill up on the 19th.

You can stand on the National Mall at no cost. I would recommend you get there early, though. Access opens at 4AM.

"The Creative Coalition's inaugural ball will bring plenty of big names to town,"

BIG names? Granted, I don't read all of the celebrity mags, but I've only even heard of about one-fourth of the people on that list. And, other than Elvis Costello and Sting, I probably wouldn't even notice if they all vanished off the face of the earth.

We watch movies to be entertained, not to give a crap about them showing up to an inauguration. They're just entertainers. Why not write an article about which video game creators are showing up to the inauguration? It wouldn't be any more absurd than this. Those guys and gals serve the same purpose as all of these over-worshipped people rattled off in this article and frankly they have a lot more talent and smaller egos too.

Speak for yourself ("We"); Most of the "celebrities" donated and worked on the campaign. Enetertainers ad excitement and energy to events (that is the purpose of an event). Who wants dull, poilitcian filled event. Snoresville

I wonder how many of these parties the Obama's will actually pay a visit to for the traditional Presidential party crashing?

I can't remember when so many inaugural balls were being hosted for an in coming President.

Answer: they will go to the Official Inaugural Balls but not to the private functions, if for no other reason than not having time. Clinton did go to the MTV ball, but it's unlikely that Obama would favor one private sponsor over another when so many have been so generous to him.

What, no Ani DiFranco?

I doubt Oprah is hosting a Kennedy Center event on election eve. Unless she's a time traveler.

A live Springsteen performance at the Lincoln Memorial will seriously rock that town, I have to say. And George Clinton!

For everyone complaining about celebrities and rich people getting to go the parties and getting special treatment....

Stop going to movies. Stop watching TV. Stop buying records. Stop buying magazines with their pictures in them.

You're the ones who made them famous. You're the ones who buy the Enquirer to see who's sha.gging who. You make them important and make what they do or say noteworthy.

And yes, Rich people are better off then poor people. So stop voting for politicians who pass laws to protect rich people!

If the average American had a room at the most expensive hotel in DC, using all their savings, just to witness this historic event. Would have their reservation cancelled to accommodate any one of the celebrities who decide to go at the last minute. They never get the shaft....

And then that person should sue the hotel.
