Palin: Caroline Kennedy Gets Free Pass From Media

I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Several people have directed me today to the raw video of an interview of Sarah Palin, conducted by John Ziegler, last seen losing his mind at Nate Silver over a weird poll he conducted with myriad foundational logic deficiencies. It's a wide ranging discussion, primarily focuses on the way Palin feels she was treated by the media, which is all she ever talks about anymore.

One of the more trenchant moments (in fact, the only trenchant moment) comes late in the interview, when Palin is invited to make a comparison between herself and Caroline Kennedy. Basically, Palin seems to think that "class bias" is enabling favorable coverage of the New York Senate hopeful:

"I've been interested to see how Caroline Kennedy will be handled and if she will be handled with kid gloves or if she will be under such a microscope. ... It's going to be interesting to see how that plays out and I think that as we watch that we will perhaps be able to prove that there is a class issue here also that was such a factor in the scrutiny of my candidacy versus, say, the scrutiny of what her candidacy may be."

I think it's true that too many have failed to consider what specific qualifications Kennedy brings to the table. Those that have, however, often compare Kennedy to Sarah Palin, most notably in a New York Times feature story that made the comparison right in the lede. That article has since been edited to remove the comparison -- which perhaps gives Palin grounds for her contention. But really, is Palin not paying attention? Last week, everyone in the media made fun of Caroline Kennedy for saying "you know" over and over again. It was pretty brutal! (It was also pretty amusing to watch, as cable TV commentators had to softly tread around the fact that they, too, often pepper their commentary with similar verbal tics.)

Anyway, I hardly think a demonstration that "class issues" prevail in politics is all that startling a revelation. I'm told that Palin's own running mate, for example, owns several homes.

If you're interested, I watched nine minutes of this nonsense so you don't have to. A rundown:

Grief Over Bloggers: Palin is still upset with the way the mainstream media treated the birth of Trig Palin. "When did we start accepting as hard news sources bloggers, anonymous bloggers, especially," said Palin to Zeigler, a blogger. Actually, as a broad topic, it's well worth discussing! But, as someone who was presented with the Trig Palin Conspiracy Story at the outset (and who personally, hasn't found it all that convincing, sorry), I take issue with the notion that Trig Palin Birth Mysteries were featured in much "hard news." In fact, the matter wasn't given a whole lot of credence by anyone but The Atlantic's Andrew Sullivan, who is not, as far as I can tell, an anonymous blogger. In the meantime, she might find bloggers "scary," but I'm going to have to save my fears for an elected official who continually suggests that an investigation absolved her of ethical lapses when, in fact, it precisely didn't.

Family in the Camera Eye: Palin seems to think that there was bias in the way her family was treated. "When I heard Barack Obama state in one of his interviews ... that his wife was off limits, meaning, his family was off limits, I naively believed that they respected that ... that it applied to all of us, but it didn't apply." EXACTLY RIGHT! And, in fact, it didn't much apply to the Obamas either! I don't know if Palin was watching the Democratic National Convention, but the entire first night was given over to the staging of a pageant play called, "Black Women: They Are NOT Terrifying!" where the media sat in judgment over whether or not Michelle Obama had successfully made herself "relatable" and "presentable" to America. It was awfully embarrassing for America that such a display was even necessary, but there you go! Meanwhile, the press is still shadowing the Obama children to school, reporting on what's being served at the Sidwell Friends cafeteria. So, Sarah Palin has concluded she is "naive." Know what? THIS IS ALSO NOT NEWS, TO ANYONE.

Story continues below

The "dropout" story: Palin is under the impression that no one in the media has corrected the erroneous account that Bristol Palin and Levi Johnston are "high school dropouts." I think it would probably be a good idea, if Sarah Palin wants to critique the media, to start reading some. Andy Barr of Politico says this interview happened on this past Monday. If that's the case, Palin should have availed herself of precisely the sort of clarification offered on December 31, 2008 by ABC News. This is especially dumb because she was the source of this correction, which she now claims was never reported.

John McCain is to blame for the Couric debacle: Palin blames the campaign for suggesting that she reappear with Katie Couric after her first interview "did not go well." "Going back for more," Palin says, "was not a wise decision." Wow. Once upon a time, the McCain campaign was to blame for keeping her at a distance from the press, but Palin contends that actually, they're to blame for making her face reporters! Campbell Brown, stand down!

Palin doesn't watch her interviews: Palin says "I never saw the interview after Katie edited it ... everybody spliced it together, whatever they did, and then aired it. Never saw how it came across, but my understanding is that so many other topics that were brought up weren't portrayed as accurately as they could have ... should have been after that interview." Yeah. Know what? I'm just not prepared to accept Palin's analysis of the way she was spliced and edited when those opinions are based on third-hand accounts of interviews she's never watched herself.

To Explain Her Reading Habits: Oh, now Palin claims that her answer to Couric's question on what newspapers she read (which was, I remind you, "All of them") was a "flippant" answer to someone who thought she was the "center of the universe." Naturally, she's got a well-rehearsed response now involving her habitual reading of local papers, pursuant to her job as Governor of Alaska. Why couldn't she just proffer that answer in the first place? If she had, you can imagine the field day she might have had if her shouting out the Anchorage Daily News had been met with condescension.

On Tina Fey: "I did see that Tina Fey was named entertainer of the year," Palin says, suggesting that Fey (along with Katie Couric) successfully leveraged her VP run to achieve job security. And, indeed! Were it not for Palin, Tina Fey would have had little to fall back upon, other than a critically acclaimed television show, a successful movie, and being a universally loved and respected writer and comedienne! Nevertheless, I think Palin is right to be fixated on Tina Fey: until she made it okay to make fun of Sarah Palin, the press' mission was largely one of using Palin as a "make up call" in their earlier treatment of Hillary Clinton.

How about a bizarre contra-historical thought exercise: How would Palin have been treated if she'd ended up as Barack Obama's running mate? Palin says, "I think they would have loved me as a candidate ... we would have seen an absolutely different and a ... much prettier profile of Sarah Palin and the Palin family and my administration." Respectfully: No. We would be seeing the election of John McCain!

Anyway, it's all a little strange. The "mainstream media" she criticizes is probably the biggest promoter of the notion that Palin is the future of the Republican Party, even as her fellow cohorts -- like Mark Sanford, who publicly laughed off this idea -- run from her in embarrassment. And why wouldn't they, since the only thing she's adding to her candidate portfolio is endless iterations of the same under-informed, self-centered media criticism, and the BFF-ship of Greta Van Susteren?

Ever notice how cult leaders create an Us VS Them mentality among their followers? They usually are very charismatic and their followers will be loyal to them no matter what logical evidence is provided. The leaders won't tolerate any individual thinking or disloyal behavior. The followers fear damnation if they do question the leader or stray from the pack mentality.......

Just saying.

My god, this woman pulls the "victim card" every time she opens her mouth! Could you even IMAGINE what she would be like in the White House? She'd call press conferences every day in order to push back on the previous day's criticisms. She has enough issues to keep a team of psychatrists working overtime for decades.

Anyone else seeing a pattern here? Palin is still whining months after the election. She IS a pitbull--- It seems that if you cross Sarah, she never let's it go until the victim has stopped squirming.

I am starting to understand what it felt like to be Trooper Wooten. Can you imagine the attacks that Sarah and Todd inflicted on him? I'm starting to really see how she got into the position of Governer.
Not by any ability, but Sarah believes that anyone who crosses her is going to pay dearly and is GOING DOWN! She attacks anyone who crosses her. No wonder they don't stand up to her in Alaska. They are all afraid to be the next person on Sarah's hit list. .

Remember when Sarah said that the First Amendment protected her from being criticized by the media? I think she really does believe that she has the right NOT to be criticized and anyone who would do so, does at their own peril.

Hypersensitivity to criticism is one of the defining traits of narcissistic / histrionic personality disorder.
Does not prevent those with the disorder from criticizing others however !

Did Sarah, somewhere in her bird size brain, think it would be a really good idea to whine some more about how "she was treated"? It's just an opportunity for everyone to rehash the reasons WHY she should not have even been on the ticket.

She is an idiot.

Am I the only person that sees Sarah Palin as just another beauty contestant? So competitive, everything is a pageant. And not a gracious loser. Although she has few of the skills to reliably serve the people of her state, she had just enough in the 'congeniality' and 'talent' competition to snow (pardon the pun) the people of Alaska: a position she really has no business being in. She tries to answer the questions thrown at her, but being nearly studious is not the same as having intelligence and the wisdom to use it. The American voting public are harsher judges than her previous ones.
Palin does not appear to be stable enough to objectively and responsibly lead a state, let alone fifty of them. Woe to America if she had actually become the second in command. I actually feared for John McCain's life if he were to have won the presidency. (Posted at Career Builders: Wanted, food taster for the president. Immunities to multiple poisons a plus.)
The more often Palin appears on television, proclaiming how unfair recent events have been to her, I continue to hope that even her most ardent supporters cringe at the cattiness and dense wit that scratch and claw at her supposed enemies. if she is foisted on the voting public in 2012, the people pushing her should be thoroughly investigated. She could be the perfect puppet; even more so than Dubya.

Nope. You're not the only one.

No. You are not wrong. Sarah (How-Obama-Got-Elected) Palin is the beauty pageant candidate, all right. But she is also not very candid. I believe the reason she could not reply to Ms. Couric's simple question about her reading habits is probably that she religiously reads the literature of the John Birch Society, something she would obviously not be eager to reveal. (And as far as I can tell, her political career is largely the creation of the NRA and some libertarian bloggers.)

I don't think Mrs. Palin is wise to make any comparison to Caroline Kennedy, who I believe is not only a lawyer but has co-authored a book on Consitutional law. Caroline Kennedy has also invested herself in the improvement and reform of New York City's public schools. What exactly has Sarah ("The Great Administrator") Palin done except give Alaskans a bigger share of the state's oil revenues and Wasilla a new (very expensive) rec center?

BTW, "Atlantic Monthly" blogger Andrew Sullivan has revealed detail's about Sarah Palin's most recent pregnancy which highlight her competitive nature and call into question her judgment. For whatever, reason, as far as I have seen, the mainstream media has not chosen to report his findings.

this was suppposed to be an article citing Sarah Palins belief that the media was babying Caroline Kennedy and it goes to prove exaclty that , Palin makes a remark and the press jumps all oer the fact she thinks she is being treated unfairly. has any one read r watched the kennedy interveiw she stumbled through it and pretty much said she is qualified to be a senator because she is; a woman, a mother, an author, a lawyer, and a kennedy. She is stating the grounds of her election on, being a relativly good person, my dad is a good person i think he should be a senator, if sarah palin came out and said "I'm a good person, and a mother, and a woman, and a Palin, the press would have a hayday but if a kennedy says that and stumbles through an interview using the verbal pause " you know" 138 times and gets the equialent to middle school girls makeing fun of her in the gym locker room kind of press there is definate favoritism

Since you seem to not get it:

Whether Kennedy is qualified for the job or not, Palin got what she got from the media because she's an i.d.i.o.t. Kennedy got reamed for the interview, but you neglect to realize that she is vying for a Senate seat, a state office - one state of 50, and she doesn't need votes, she needs an appointment. Palin was running for VP, a nationwide office - one nation of 1, and needed votes, but couldn't seem to prevent herself from pissing people off every time she opened her inarticulate mouth with constant mud and insults being flung at anyone who didn't agree with her, even to the point of accusing 2/3 of the country of being "fake" Americans.

Yeah. She's totally right. It's all media bias.

Why is Palin coming out at all? Everyone involved with the election last fall, has moved on with their lives? BTW how come the press, didn't go after all the things her pastor said, such as "The Lord should punish America" and Isreal should be wiped off the fact of the earth.? The press never used this, but they could have.

The press were relentless when Carolyn made a slip up and repeated the same word over and over.

Maybe the press in AK, should start going after Palin for not doing her job.

You have to be illiterate to not acknowledge that Sarah is right about this. If you disagree, feel free to post a link to any mainstream media news report that isnt an opinion piece that gives it to Kennedy as hard as they gave it to Palin.

If, as you say, Kennedy has not received the same treatment as Palin; could there not be a valid reason or reasons why? I'm not agreeing or disagreeing with you - just playing the devil's advocate here. Be honest about this. Think about the offices that they potentially would have held or will be holding. Think about the statements that Gov Palin made during the course of the campaign - and I mean all of them - not just those in interviews and the statements that Ms. Kennedy has made since she announced shee was interested in the Senate seat. In other words, as objectively as is humanly possible, make 2 lists, 1 for each woman. What did you come up with? A friend of mine did this; someone who actually voted for McCain/Palin, because she wanted an objective answer. It wasn't favorable to Palin. Just thought you might want to know.

I think the term illiterate doesn't quite fit here. What does not having the ability to read have to do with acknowleding Palin is right about this?

Anyways, I guess the fact that media reporting something like her own running mate's campaign calling her a "hillbilly" proves they're bias, huh?

Nope, what it proves is everybody under the sun, with a brain, including her own campaign knows the truth about Palin, yet she still has holdout supporters that believe otherwise. What does that say about you?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 03:06 AM on 01/12/2009

Actually, you have to be deluded to think that Sarah is right.

That the press is questioning Kennedy's qualifications at all is proof that Palin, and you, are mistaken. Kennedy is being considered for a Senate seat, not a possible leader of the country. It is not unusual for people like Kennedy run for Senate and win. The primary reason that Kennedy is being questioned is because there is the whiny cry of "its not fair!". Kennedy is being considered for a temporary appointment to a large body that already contains members far less qualified than Kennedy herself.

Gotta love it. Post any news criticizing Kennedy that isn't an opinion piece. That's rich...and extremely disingenuous. You must have went to the Neo-Con/Palin school of double speak and spin. How can you have a new story that is criticizing somebody that would NOT be an opinion piece?

Well, tell you what...Same to you. Post any story that is NOT an opinion piece and is part of the mainstream media that criticized Palin. Go ahead...

Oh please! Since the very beginning she has gave us plenty of ammunition! Lets face that!

In regards to the articles headline: Caroline has a law degree and is a member of the Bar Association... Palin has a communications degree yet she can't handle Couric?

Oh yeah and are most interviews suppose to have this much editing? What's up with the fading in and out after EVERY question?

"I never saw the interview after Katie edited it ... everybody spliced it together, whatever they did, and then aired it."

More nonsensical word salad:
1. If she never saw it, what made her think it was spliced?
2. When will politicians stop telling us they don't watch their disastrous interviews and/or press conferences? WE DON'T BELIEVE YOU. Of course you watched it--you had more reason to watch it than ANY OF US.

"Never saw how it came across, but my understanding is that so many other topics that were brought up weren't portrayed as accurately as they could have ... should have been after that interview."

3. This barely qualifies as English: topics that were brought up weren't portrayed accurately after the interview? Huh?
How do you "portray topics" during an interview, let alone after one?
How "could" topics be portrayed? How "should" they have been portrayed?
Who is portraying what here? I'm complelely lost in her maze of words that say nothing.

I have long been puzzled by the allegataion made against Governor Sarah Palin, that her son Trig was not really her son, but that she engaged in a cover-up to protect her daughter Bristol. And I have wondered why anyone could be so sick to cook up such a a story. As I was watching her interview with Ziegler, the reasons suddenly came to to me. Sarah Palin has accepted the gift of a child, who happened to have Down Syndrome. In this act she aimed an unacceptable moral rebuke at a whole generation, for whom abortion was a solution to this, and even less excrucating problems. Without opening her mouth she implicitly condemed a whole generation of left/iberal idealogues. So what to do? Why easy! Turn the narrative into a dark tale of deception and hypocracy--made all the more juicy by way of contrast with Palin's espousal of 'Christian family values'. And above all else, make her family feel pain, so that Palin will withdraw from public life.. If she does not withdraw from public life, denounce her as a 'bad mother'. We have had the 'politics of personal destruction,. Now with Sarah Palin we have the 'politics of family destruction'. And whats more, this can be done with the silence and cvomplicity of the most corrupt of America's establishments--the Feminiists. Nice try. Somehow I feel that the Palin Family are made of sterner stuff.

I have often wondered how anti-Palinistas became tis sick.

A great many women who have actually gone through labor and delivery have long been puzzled by Governor Sarah Palin's 'wild ride from Texas to Alaska while leaking amniotic fluid to have a doctor who is NOT an ob-gyn specializing in high-risk pregnancies deliver her preemie special needs baby at a regional medical center with NO Neonatal Intensive Care Unit . . .' ( bypassing Providence Hospital in Anchorage, which DOES have an NICU) . . .

If Sarah's story is true it shows appalling lack of planning, judgement and concern for herself, her baby, two flight crews who might be dealing with an emergency delivery of an infant in possible need of immediate specialized intervention, and two commercial planes full of people who just wanted to get where they were going without any drama.

If Sarah's story is not true . . . well, that is a whole 'nother kettle of fish. Either option is pretty bad.

All that would have been necessary to dispel any allegations was a certified birth certificate. Not the least bit necessary to throw seventeen year old daughter in front of the media to prove that speculation 'could not be true ! Look at Bristol !' The 'politics of family destruction' are totally in her court. No matter how her supporters try to spin it.

So, Miss Sarah, is the 'wild ride' story a true recollection of events. Or not ? Inquiring minds want to know. For reasons that are perfectly legitimate and have

Ironic, isn't it? The right wing loonies have been screaming for Obama's long form birth certificate because they believe there is some sort of cover-up around his birth. But when a GOP candidate has a birth issue questioned, 'It's some sick, twisted plot to smear their candidate's good name', and 'How dare anyone cook up such a hateful story to to begin with?' I had the same sort of questions as you did as far as 'details' about the plane trip.
I had posed a question to the women who might something and asked....

Wouldn't it be 'v e r y' dangerous to fly in a pressurized cabin (plane) when you know you are pregnant...?

I had heard you should N O T fly even a couple of months before the due date..?

And one of the stories said her water broke before she spoke at that Conference... she went to the podium and did her speech anyway... and then flew home after that speech.

As a Mother..Common sense just asks You... shouldn't your #1concern be the Child...?
Yet your mind is on the Speech instead... makes 'No sense'
And then the flight Home like you describe...? Putting the baby as well as those on the flight in jeopardy.

No 'rational' person thinks that way... unless there is 'something else' going on. Nobody else would make That decision.

I always wondered why she didn't tell her familly she was pregnant, with the downs baby. Do you think it's because she was ashamed that something was wrong with the baby, or did she fear what they might think about her choice to have the baby? Also I remember reading, no one knew she was pregnant because she wore her reguar clothes all the time. I guess she has better abs then me, because after five kids, you would think she would be showing alot.

If she had done so, it certainly would have done a lot to put a stop to the rumors about Trig's birth.

Perhaps she did so, but I can't recall hearing anything about it.

I actually sent an email to John "bitter and angry" Ziegler's foolish self and to the HowObamaGotElected website.

This is the first half:

Perhaps if the GOP didn't make Palin their she-ro and face of the new GOP. Perhaps if the GOP still didn't encourage those from rural regions of the midwest and south and elements of suburbia to maintain their racism and homophobia which further alienates it from people who aren't like that and surely turns off people of color and gays. Perhaps if you didn't have fools like Ann Coulter spouting off ridiculous polarizing comments about single mothers (yet during the election the GOP embraced it in Palin's knocked teen daughter and circled the wagons on the mainstream media rightfully calling out her and the GOP's hypocrisy and double standards on morality and what is right and wrong). Perhaps if other fools from other conservative outlets didn't also spout out such ridiculous commentary and overt racism in their words. Perhaps if Palin actually was humble enough to be like the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz and asked for a brain. Perhaps if Palin actually took time in that recent interview with John Ziegler to self reflect on her short comings, what she did wrong, her personal responsibility and personal accountability (isn't that the main things the GOP like to be proud of doing) instead of placing blame on Tina Fey and Katie Couric.

This is the second half:

Perhaps these are the reason as to how Obamagotelected. Perhaps the GOP and the persons handling this website and the producer of that "Palin therapy whining & sarcasm session" need to spend more time on efforts making the party less polarizing and clinging to old stereotypes and less time on random polls of Obama supporters who aren't news savy. Not all Obama supporters are like the ones shown in your dumb %$# video and actually do watch all news outlets that aren't mainstream media!!! This supporter is one who would not have fallen for your "gotcha" questions and would have answered every one of them correctly.

How funny to showcase the website address during that Palin interview and the woman speaking and still not getting it is the reason as to HOW OBAMA GOT ELECTED!! (Laughing my %$# off)
