Bob Poe, Alaska Governor? Palin Gets Her First Challenger

I Like ItI Don’t Like It

Bob Poe, an erstwhile state commissioner and former president of the Anchorage Economic Development Corp., has announced his run for the Alaska Democratic gubernatorial ticket in 2010. Whether Sarah Palin will seek re-election is yet to be determined. But if she does, The Hill says that Poe could prove to be a formidable challenger:

Poe is viewed as a serious, viable candidate by state Democrats, though there are some other candidates that could derail Poe's bid to unseat Palin. Poe lacks statewide name recognition unlike a candidate such as Ethan Berkowitz, the Democrat who came close to defeating Rep. Don Young (R-Alaska) this past November.

However, it is precisely this lack of name recognition that prompted Poe to announce his gubernatorial candidacy "Obama-style" -- two years prior to the election. The Anchorage Daily News notes here that, in addition to his public obscurity, Poe has never run for public office and thus lacks campaign experience. But this is another hurdle he is prepared to clear. According to the Daily News:

Poe, asked why he's announcing this early, said it gives him time to get out and meet voters. He cited a comment in the Alaska Ear, which, reporting on rumors he would run, suggested the first thing that people would ask is "Who's Bob Poe?"

...

But he's been around Alaska government and business for 28 years. He's currently a business consultant in Anchorage and said he worked under four governors - Sheffield, Cowper, Hickel and Knowles.

On the chance that Palin does decide to run for re-election, Poe has already begun to exploit her recent absence while running for Vice President in the midst of the financial meltdown. He told KTUU News that "It's a really big deal to most Alaskans how our economy moves forward and the role state government has in that. I'm concerned that right now there's not much attention to running state government, there's a lot of attention to running for something else."

Daily Kos, exploring Poe's chances for beating Palin, has concluded that it won't be easy:

Palin's favorables are still pretty high, last time we checked -- 60% favorable, 38% unfavorable. So it'll be a tough race for Bob Poe, and as we saw in 2008, even popular Democrats, like Berkowitz and Mark Begich, have trouble in Alaska, even against crooked Republicans like Young and Ted Stevens.

It should be a fun one, though. The chances of beating Palin are very low, but it will be nice to have her in the media spotlight again in 2010. Even a victory for her in 2010 could damage her chances for 2012, if it's not "convincing" enough.

Thus, Poe is not the first Alaska Democrat to enjoy somewhat favorable odds. But with such a head-start, it seems only time will tell whether he can prove himself on the campaign trail, as he reportedly has in his past public service duties. Interestingly, the Anchorage Daily News also notes that Poe's wife Terzah Poe works for Shell Oil. This is an interesting parallel to Todd Palin, who was obliged to take a leave from BP when his wife's administration entered into negotiations with that company for a natural gas pipeline in 2007.

Bob Poe, an erstwhile state commissioner and former president of the Anchorage Economic Development Corp., has announced his run for the Alaska Democratic gubernatorial ticket in 2010. Whether Sarah ...

I was interested in how many uninformed Democrats there are out there. You may contribute to any canidate that is running on a national platform. State races are not open to outside contributers. But give and give often, if Poe accepts your $$ he will be in violation of state and federal election laws and have a cell reserved in Seward, AK. for him.

It's not a violation to donate to the Democratic Party, silly.

They know, what to do with the money, if I assign it especially to Bob Poe.

To bad Mogamboguru, you can't designate it to one canidate. The DNC then gets to assign it.

Actually, state races ARE open to out-of-state contributions, but there is a strict limit.
Alaska campaign law requires that no more than 10 percent of a candidate's donations come from out-of-state contributors. This limit, along with the $500-per-contributor limit, was affirmed by the Alaska Supreme Court.

Does anyone besides me now have these bizarre visions of a very large image of Putin's head, kind of like the wizard in Oz image, floating across the sky like a hot air balloon? Given that Putin seems to be as nutty as Palin these days, I just can't get that image of out my mind when I see either of them on TV.

I'd say Mr. Poe is doing a great service to his fellow countrymen. Keep her busy trying to maintain her governor position there so she'll stay out of our hair in the lower 48. This man deserves a medal of honor !!

A little about Bob Poe: He is a serious person of great substance, energy, intellect and accomplishment. He's no hick, that's for sure. Mind you, that doesn't necessarily bode well for electoral success in Alaska, land of the re-elected Don Young, the almost re-elected Ted Stevens and, of course, the ever-so "down-to-earth" Sarah Palin.

So, let me get this straight: You didn't like S. Palin because she was the mayor of Wasilla and then a govenor of a state that has a population of approximately 500,000. But Mr Poe runs the Anchorage Economic Development Corp. and that us enough experience for you? Can you see where I am going with this? Democratic party support is one thing, hypocracy another.

I have to say your facts don't speak well to the rest of us. She clearly has worked her way up through the ranks hoodwinking as she goes. One interview showed the rest of the country that she was merely a pretty, manipulative, self-serving person who is woefully unaware of current affairs issues that our high school children are more savvy on. To say she holds such a high approval rating in your state among the voters speaks more about the people there than it does about her.

You watched one bad interview, but I bet you know nothing about her work on the Oil and Gas Commission, cleaning it up, and the AGIA project. I've started reading a book about her negotiations on the pipeline, and the production tax, and I'm already bogged down in the first chapter because it's so complicated .

Seems like a no-brainer to me. You'd have to be high on meth to vote for the reigning Ms. Pathetic again.....oh wait, this is Alaska we're talking about right? the highest per capita meth using state in the country?

Yea, he's got no chance.

I wish him well, I would like to see him debate her on energy and economic issues. Palin is pretty but I think Alaskans have woken up and realize they need more than a pretty face. IF gas and oil prices remain low for the next couple of years the 2010 race could be interesting. I wish him the best.

Yes Alskans realize just how much Gov. palin has done for them like repeal the state tax on gasoline when the prices were so high and give a $1200 enegy rebate to every resident to help offset the high energy prices. She also went against her own party to wipe out corruption.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:40 PM on 01/09/2009

Oh, she went against her own party to wipe out corruption? So Randy Ruedrich is no longer chairman of the Republican Party of Alaska? When was he removed from that position? The last I saw, Randy Ruedrich was busy organizing Palin-for-vice-president rallies and events in Anchorage.
And are you crediting Sarah Palin for the work of the U.S. Department of Justice?

No, we really *need* Sarah Palin around. Not only do late-night TV comedians need her, but she won the election for you and you need to recognize and appreciate her for it.

The Democrats will find it much easier to run against Republicans if she's still a visible part of their party, and the Republicans need her as an example of what you get while trying to be a maverick and simultaneously trying to get the Bush/Rove base on your side. And unlike Dick Cheney, at least when she kills something, she eats it.
