Former model and former wife of Sir Paul McCartney, Heather Mills doled out $1 million worth of vegan food to underprivileged children in the Bronx. Though it happened a few months ago, Mills made an appearance on the Today Show... today, talking about it briefly.

According to John Lauinger and Carrie Melago of The Daily News,

The former "Dancing With the Stars" contestant dismissed the notion that her efforts were an attempt to rebuild her image after the nasty divorce with the former Beatle. "I've been involved in helping men, women and children for 20 years," she said.

While Mills is getting battered in the press, she received a warm welcome at the Hunts Point Riverside Park. Most children gathered around barbecue pits filled with soy burgers and soy dogs didn't even know who she was. Tiana Cora, 13, knew only that the Beatles were singers and wasn't interested in Mills' personal drama. "She wants to help us," Tiana said. Tammy Tadua, 37, was thrilled that someone was introducing healthy food options into the area, among the poorest congressional districts in the country. "We need more people like her around here," Tadua said.

The woman is trying to do good, and all you can do is criticize her. So she gave vegan food. So what. I've been in dire financial situations in my almost 50 years, often wondering what or where the next meal would be. I would have welcomed food of any sort. That being said, it's better to help people help themselves than constantly be looking for a handout. Bravo to Heather for her efforts.

When I was in Berkeley Ca not too long ago, I saw homeless people living on the streets asking for handouts with a cardboard sign that said; "Hungry, Homeless and Vegan."

Not sure what to make of that. It sounds like a difficult lifestyle choice.

I saw her on a talk show when she was married to Paul, and she was awful. The rudest interview I've ever witnessed. It was Regis and Kelly. She went into a diatribe about all the people who were out to get her. Her personal assistant and other people who work directly with her have all quit. She is trying to fix her image, but her personality is so abrasive it is going to be tough. Seriously, I would rather live in a cardboard box than have to work or live with her.

Giving out the vegan food to the kids in the Bronx was a little weird. Sort of shows a disconnect with the problems of real people in poverty. It's not necessarily the vegan aspect, just that many of these kids need nutritious food--plain and simple. I suspect most of the people were a little mystified in the midst of their gratitude and may have considered how much farther the money would have gone toward plain old groceries from Kroger. At least, that's what I would have thought. Of course, I bought plain old groceries just like my own for my friend when she was going through and hard time and she was offended they weren't organic.

Watch the soy...too much of processed soy can lead to thyroid problems. The bean itself isn't even digestible to humans, but the processed beans (which makes it a CHEAP and digestible human "food" additive and product) is not healthy in high doses, and given that soy is now in virtually anything processed, this is a real problem. Don't supplement it in your diet by eating soy products purposely. We were sold a bill of goods by the Soy industry, that it is a supposedly health food. Not so. I know vegetarians who supplemented with soy burgers and such, and got permanent thyroid damage from it. Perhaps she should stick with giving kids fresh fruit and vegetables.

Being a mean-spirited person is unheathly. Posting negative comments and condemning folks on the Huffington Post will give you cancer or at the very least will make you sick -- if you already aren't sick. The studies conducted on soy is minimal and not thorough enough to make an accurate assessment. There are huge differences between heirloom/organic soy and conventionally grown soy. There are no studies indicating heirloom/organic soy being unhealthy if you are not allergic. A vegan lifestyle is progressive and healthy when followed correctly. I'm forty years old yet, was carded last night at Whole foods -- when buying a bottle of organic wine for "looking so young and healthy" as the cashier described me. She looked at what I was purchasing and commented "ooh, it's because you eat so well." And for the record; my doctor who is an omnivore says the same thing. Anyone with a compassionate heart will think what Heather Mills has done for the Bronx community is rad and commendable. Be well.

soy is a hormone disruptor. She's a sick woman. also vegan food is WRONG. Vegan is UNHEALTHY. To learn how to eat go to the Weston A Price Foundation. So-called "primitive" diets have produced wonderful genetics in isolated societies. eat what they eat. And it AINT vegan food.

Soy is a bean -- plain and simple. I don't know why you insist on demonizing it. What's next? Chick peas? Black beans? How about lentils? No diet should comprise of solely one ingredient so you shouldn't eat soy breakfast, lunch, and dinner but there is nothing wrong with having a serving of soy in your daily regime.

And as for "vegan" being unhealthy, please do some more research and read about the plethora of people who have slowed their cancer, reversed their heart disease, or cured their diabetes through a low-fat vegan diet. There is nothing unhealthy about a varied whole foods plant-based diet. In fact, it's probably the healthiest diet that exists.

Many people are allergic to soy. Are soy beans soaked before processing to remove phytochemicals that make them hard to digest? NO! Soy interferes with calcium absorption and should only be eaten in fermented forms. Commercial soy products are not prepared in traditional healthy ways. Its all about speeding up the process to make money-- factory soy farms.
You call them "Plain and simple"? How condescending, they are very complex carbohydrates.

good for her! This is the way charity should be done, using your own money. She sees a group that she wants to help and so she uses her own money to do so rather than agitate to spend more govt money. To reach into her own pocket to help someone else is a good and laudable thing. To take money from me under the threat of force and spend it in whatever manner is simply theft even if it is the govt taking the money and some bureaucrat spending it on something he feels is useful.

There is no decisive evidence that soy is a hormone disruptor.
As a vegetarian, not vegan, meatless diets are much healthier than those with meat.

He asked her to marry him, she did and it didn't work. As far as I know, she has done nothing to deserve such hatred from the public. After all HE wanted to marry her in the first place. If she lived with him and had his child she deserves something. She was not broke when they met.
