Palin: Katie Couric, Tina Fey Have Been "Exploiting" Me

MICHAEL GORMLEY   01/ 9/09 07:20 PM ET   AP

Feypalin

ALBANY, N.Y. — She messed up her first interviews, didn't show much of a grasp of the issues and, dontcha know, had a speech pattern that was widely mimicked. Sarah Palin? You betcha. But Caroline Kennedy also fits the bill. The difference is that while the conservative Republican Palin was ridiculed in the press and on "Saturday Night Live" in her quest to be vice president, the liberal Democratic Kennedy, after early criticism in the media, remains the perceived favorite in her bid for a Senate seat from New York.

In an interview with conservative radio talk-show host and filmmaker John Ziegler, Palin questioned whether Kennedy was getting better treatment than Palin did as Republican presidential candidate John McCain's running mate. Clips from Ziegler's interview were posted on YouTube this week.

"I've been interested to see how Caroline Kennedy will be handled and if she will be handled with kid gloves or if she will be under such a microscope," Palin said.

Some of the critics see the issue as a liberal or Democratic bias. Others see background _ Palin from Alaska and Kennedy from Manhattan _ as the reason for what they consider different treatment of the women.

Palin herself suggested class issues could be behind the differences in coverage, saying "... we will perhaps be able to prove that there is a class issue here also that was such a factor in the scrutiny of my candidacy versus, say, the scrutiny of what her candidacy may be."

"There is clearly an urban centric, or urban elitism, attitude that pervades much of the media as we know it on many issues," said Nancy Larraine Hoffman, a former journalism instructor and New York state senator.

"You have the combined effect here of a stereotypical expectation of successful women, going to Wellesley, holding law degrees like Hillary Clinton," she said. "Caroline Kennedy perhaps is more in tune with many of the people in the media rather than someone who can quickly be cast in a whole other light because she happens to live in a rural area."

The difference in treatment could also be explained by the position each woman had been seeking. Palin was hoping to become the nation's first female vice president, just second in command to 72-year-old Sen. John McCain. Meanwhile, Kennedy is vying to be named one of 100 Senators.

But the media's criticism of Kennedy has started, first during a brief upstate tour on Dec. 17 when she evaded reporters and questions on issues _ leading to comparisons to Palin. She got hit again in interviews with news organizations beginning Dec. 26, in which she was pilloried for her use of "you know" and "um," much in the way Palin was mocked for her "you betcha" responses and other casual phrasing.

New York news media also have published or broadcast numerous stories containing criticism of Kennedy's lack of experience in elective office and whether she is the best choice to replace Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, who has been asked to join the Obama administration as secretary of state.

In a news release issued Friday, Palin's office said the governor was dismayed that her comments in the Ziegler interview were being taken out of context in the media "to create adversarial situations."

Regarding her remarks about Kennedy, Palin said: "I was not commenting at all on Caroline Kennedy as a prospective U.S. senator, but rather on the seemingly arbitrary ways in which news organizations determine the level and kind of scrutiny given to those who aspire to public office. In fact, I consider Ms. Kennedy qualified and experienced, and she could serve New York well."

In the interview, Palin criticized the news media's coverage of her and her family, telling Ziegler that CBS News anchor Katie Couric and comic actress Tina Fey had been "exploiting" her. Palin gave Couric a rare interview at the beginning of her campaign for vice president, and Fey frequently impersonated Palin on "Saturday Night Live."

Palin singled out the Couric interview as condescending, particularly a question about what she reads and, according to the governor, "What do you guys do up there?" In fact, Couric never asked that question but did press, unsuccessfully, for the governor to state specific newspapers she read, which Palin never answered fully.

Palin also complained about reports suggesting that Trig Palin was not her son and said she was "frustrated" by rampant rumors about her and her family. However, mainstream media stayed away from such rumors, which were fueled by bloggers and others online and the supermarket tabloids.

"I wasn't believed that Trig was really my son," she said. She called it a "sad state of affairs."

"What is the double-standard here?" she asked. "Why would people choose to believe lies? What is it that drives people to believe the worst, perpetuate the worst?"

"When did we start accepting as hard news sources bloggers, anonymous bloggers especially?" she asked.

It is pretty tough to exploit someone who already promotes herself and and pushes her family dramas into the public arena every chance she gets. (Because attention for her kids = attention for Sarah, and keeping her name in the news is apparently her primary goal.) McCain was smart enough to lose gracefully and go back to his job without whining and stamping his feet. I didn't care for the campaign he ran, but I do give him points for exiting with grace and class when it was over.

Sarah, on the other hand, can hardly stop running her mouth. The more she talks, the more grateful I am that the voters slammed a door in her face on november 4th. The negative press she has been getting since November and her continued yammering makes it very clear that she just...doesn't....GET it.

Sarah is much, much better at the exploitation game than anyone she has been pointing fingers at in the past two months. In fact, she appears to be a pro who had a lot of experience doing it before the election.

Why would I be bitter?--Obama is in the White House.

I think people are just tired of hearing Alaska Governor Lite promote herself as if she actually had enough smarts to run anything in washington. if she really was smart she'd be back in Alaska doing her job at 110%, to show she can stay on task and accomplish something before crawling up to the next rung of the career ladder. Providing some real assistance to Emmonak would be an excellent start.

Poor Sarah still doesn't understand she was used, hired to be the lipstick on an aging pig (metaphorically speaking), that was looking less and less attractive to a lot of voters. By speaking Sarah showed herself unprepared for the Federal level of government. I may be wrong, but I doubt Caroline will give that impression. Anyway Caroline is seeking a Senate seat appointment. A big difference from someone who is seeking to be an old man's heart beat from the most powerful office in the world. Even after giving so many Republicans a pass mainstream media is always going to be the Re publican's favorite excuse.

The first words out of Palin's mouth were the unfair questions that were being raised concerning the birth of her son Trig. Apparently, despite her denials, people still question whether, in fact, Sarah faked this pregnancy. See, e.g. www. palindeception.com. I for one am willing to give her the benefit of a doubt and say, I believe you Sarah when you told the world that at age 44, with a known high risk pregnancy, after your water broke and contractions began, you waited ten hours to give a speech, then travelled from Dallas, TX (four hour flight) and, after a two hour delay, took another four hour flight to Anchorage, drove by Providence Hospital (which had neonatal care and your doctor had privileges) drove another hour to Palmer to a small regional medical center with no neonatal clinic. Tell us Sarah, were you intentionally trying it cause this child to be stillborn, or were you just acting in reckless disregard of the child's life? Inquiring minds want to know.

For one whom claims to be a victim of explotation by the media, Failin' Palin sure seems to enjoy the spotlight which that very media provides. It also seems just fine for her to use the media to exploit herself as well as her children, her husband and her own warped view of the world. Sarah Palin, your hypocricy knows no bounds !!!
03:07 PM on 01/12/2009
Sarah Palin exhibits a speech pattern indicative of someone who doesn't read. Its very, very obvious. I've met many people like this...pronouncing words incorrectly, using parts of speech incorrectly, e.g. nouns as verbs (Democrat congresss, predator lender, etc.) They typically do not read on a daily basis, and get most of their information from television. They are generally not well-informed on topics that do not affect them directly, and have a limited range of interests. This describes Palin accurately.

In addition to her poor grammar, Palin is a terrible communicator. Much of what she said came across as gibberish, because thats what it was. She is unable to speak plainly and clearly. She embarrassed herself, and that reality is hitting home now.

I suspect that Palin was so sheltered from the negative press during the campaign, that she actually thought she did well. Its just these last few months that she has probably gone back and read and listened to the vast amount of negative press she had. She sounds like a high school girl who got passed over for Prom Queen with her "Well, like, Katie, YOU are not the center of the universe!" comment. She keeps digging herself a deeper hole every interview she gives.

Poor little Sarah, always the innocent victim. I'd have more sympathy for her if she didn't persistently spew hateful, dangerous, and deceitful venom throughout her run for vice presidency.

My thoughts here:

Hey Failin' - If you don't like the press coverage you get, why do you keep seeking out the media and giving interviews? Just shut the *&%$ up and do the job you actually managed to get elected to do. I know that America would be grateful to never hear from you again!

"Some of the critics see the issue as a liberal or Democratic bias. Others see background _ Palin from Alaska and Kennedy from Manhattan _ as the reason for what they consider different treatment of the women."

Oh, come on. Sarah Palin is an idiot. Caroline Kennedy is a smart woman who's been caught in the headlights. Sarah is the half-wit we're all supposed to identify with as Americans. Caroline is the intelligent, sophisticated woman untainted by the sorry bullsh*t that passes as politics in this country and who's not as polished as she'd otherwise be.

Line them up, side by side. Vote for:

Half-wit who can't string together more than five words with coherence, or

Sohpisticate, who's never been trained in the art of bullsh*t.

Who would you vote for? Seems pretty obvious to me.

Abuse of power comes as no surprise.
07:02 PM on 01/12/2009
I wouldn't vote for either one of them, thanks. But at least Sarah has shown the concern (very misguided, but concern nonetheless) to RUN for office a couple of times. I'd be a whole lot more comfortable with New York's upcoming coronation of Princess C if she'd thrown herself into the messy fray of politics a few times in her past. She certainly is untainted, I'll give you that.

And I don't think I'm the only person on these boards (with roots that can quite fairly be labeled "educated White Trash") who thinks that Sarah's comments on class and urban elitism might just have some merit. They'd have more if she weren't such a hypocrite herself, true. But we're letting Ms Kennedy rise to power quite easily, I'd say.

dead Moose Exploits Sarah....
04:55 AM on 01/12/2009
I don't know much about Caroline Kennedy or her overall suitability for the Senate. In any event that's up to New York's governor and eventually its voters.

But I was very impressed by her excellent books on the Constitution and Bill of Rights. She's a real rarity among politicians (or would-be politicians): someone who not only understands what the Bill of Rights is all about, but who actually believes in it and is willing to say so when most of the country seems to think it's some sort of liberal plot. Except for the Second Amendment, that is.

That should count for SOMETHING.
08:26 AM on 01/12/2009
Sorry, that might not count for anything because, as we've learned from Sarah Palin, we're all stupid as a nation of people and all we want is someone more stupid than ourselves to be president.

It's George Bush all over again.

Sarah, read my lips: AMERICA DESERVES BETTER!
12:31 PM on 01/12/2009
Apparently we're not ALL stupid, or she would be in Washington D.C. right now, instead of Alaska. The majority of Americans just got lazy and let the dimwitted minority make our decisions for us. The Bush disaster snapped everyone back to reality. When the majority votes, we get good leadership. When we let others choose for us, we get somebody that the dumbest among us wants to have a beer with.

Would she have acted the same way in that mean ol' Putin had been a poopie head to her?
She's totally victimizing herself and she wants to be president?!
12:34 PM on 01/12/2009
Exactly. If Katie Couric can throw her into a tailspin, what would have happened when she had to deal with Ahmadinejad?

Sarah? You actually used these words??

"I've been interested to see how Caroline Kennedy will be handled and if she will be handled with kid gloves or if she will be under such a microscope"

Let's make a simple and truthful comparison of yourself and Caroline Kennedy.

One has been known to the world for over 40 years and has proven herself to be a graceful, intelligent person qualified for the job she's seeking.

The other has been known for just a few months and has come across as a self-deluded, backwoods hick putting the fear of GOD into any rational person that she might actually get into the position she's seeking...

3 guesses as to who is who....
02:13 AM on 01/12/2009
Can we please, as a nation, as a people, stop this idiotic and pointless worship of the Kennedy's? I am talking mostly to the democrats and liberals obviously, and I very much am both. While I am a leftist I'll never understand the Kennedy thing. They were shot. It was sad. Get over it. Several others of them were stupid are solely responsible for their own deaths (skiing while playing football has to receive some sort of Darwin award and John John was just a crappy pilot who shouldn't have been flying at night). Caroline has done nothing, absolutely nothing with her life to be considered 'qualified.' OOOOO she's graceful and intelligent. My butt, people like her cause she's a Kennedy, if she were actually tough and intelligent she'd do open interviews instead of always, always shying away from tough, honest questions. She does soft interviews only and merely plays up the 'but I'm a Kennedy, naturally I should get the position' nonsense. If the people of New York vote her in, fine, whatever, they deserve what they get, but for the love of God I can't stand the sight of my party making an extreme joke out of itself by simply handing her the position she doesn't deserve.
12:51 PM on 01/12/2009
Bull crap. You are not a Democrat, because we do not call ourselves 'leftist'. If you are a New Yorker and you don't want Caroline Kennedy to be your senator, call Governor Patterson and make your opinion known. If you're not, then it's really none of your concern. Hillary Clinton got the same senate seat solely on name recognition, too . She wasn't even a New York resident. She had no political experience of her own, just her husband's coat tails. Yet she was elected and did a very good job. I'd say Caroline is in the very same position. If Governor Patterson thinks it is what is in the best interest of the state, he will choose her. End of story.

Then Palin's been exploiting the RNC, McCain, the American voters, and the world press. And her family and the state of Alaska and even Wasilla.
