Reuters:

U.S. President-elect Barack Obama has selected Julius Genachowski, a technology executive and former classmate from Harvard Law School, to lead the Federal Communications Commission, a Democratic source said on Monday.

Genachowski served as chief counsel for former FCC Chairman Reed Hundt, the chairman under former President Bill Clinton, and held various positions at IAC/InterActiveCorp, as well as other technology posts.

I am so glad that the President-elect is diversifying the incoming Administration and including younger qualified people as well instead of All White Males over 60+. We need to have people with new ideas and a vision for the future instead of the same old way of doing things. Go President-elect, you are on a roll. Please keep it up.

Seems to me that it was BC who had the good sense to hire this (first) friend and fellow classmate of the president-elect.

Mr. Genakowski: Please lower the megaphone of the loonie and religious right who have hijacked our publicly-owned airwaves, elevate and expand the reach of progressive voices, force the cable/satellite networks to be intelligent (cut down inane advertising) and affordable (we own the turf they occupy), reverse the demise of print newspapers, support and save journalism. Restore public funding of public broadcasting (so it doesn't have to cater to corporate wishes). For a start.

That said, I wish Commissioner Michael Kopps or Jonathan Edelstein had gotten the promotion.

'Change we can believe in'. these are words we want to believe in, and that are a consequence of our times, which is why the statement has worked so well in this era of economic gloom, ridiculous wars and a shifting global balance of power. Bush and Obama are probably members of DistrictFile.com and connected to each other :)

The change must be to have lawyers run everything.

The FCC is the agency that need to be 'cleaned up and cleaned out'! My TV's aven't been the same, since my Cable Company switched to digital. De regulation has permitted propogandist to infiltrate our airwaves with garbage since Clinton.

I don't say much but I worry.

Have all the *Clintonites* that made the mistakes that were laid bare to the greed fully exploited by the Bush administration learned their lessons and have plans to correct their initial errors?

I worry, and maybe I'll pray. I guess we'll get a better picture in a month or two.

There is no way of avoiding Clinton era guys as thats when all the current generation were coming of age.
Dont forget it was the last successful (economic and political) term of a Dem president. Obama got into politics during the Clinton era. Lets judge each one on their merits for the job and their performance. I am more concerned with getting back retired (by age) Clintonites than the younger ones as that does not build the party too much in the long term.

Down side: He was Counsel to Reed Hundt, the former FCC Commissioner, who opened up the airwaves to unfettered buy-ups by major media monopolies.

Up side: Before he did that he was a aide to Justice Brennan (and Souter, when Brennan retired).

And while he's on the boards of all these big internet and tech groups

he's also involved in these

Does ANYONE remember that BUSH appointed COLIN POWELLS COMPLETELY UNQUALIFIED SON to this post. That was JUST before Cable and Cell phone companies we freed to run us all into the ground and rip us off blind.

Rumor has it Powell made the Appointment of his son a condition of joining Bushs staff when he needed the Black Vote so Desperately.
