So sad for the loss, and for the tough road ahead for the baby. Our first grandchild was born way early. Her lungs were like tissue paper. Spent the first 6 weeks of her life in NICU, tubes all over the place, unable to be held and cuddled. It's very hard on everyone. And it'll cost the family a fortune, even if they have insurance. They'll need all the prayers and blessings they can get.
I lost a baby girl who was premature. She weighed 3 lb, but she has a membrane disease of the lung. She was on a respirator but she developed a problem absorbing oxygen and her MD said that she would be severly disabled if she did pull out of it. She was only given a 5-10% chance of surviving, so we did have to pull the plug. I still cry on her birthday, it is so hard. I really feel for any Mom or Dad that go through this. Yes we should say a prayer for this little one. There are miracles today though and even babies under one pound do well.
The mother wasn't dead. Her heart was still beating. She gave birth to her daughter while her body was alive.
Technically true . . . . .
My experience in losing my father, due to a major coronary, I observed his comatose body which was "alive" via life support in the ICU . . . eventually the doctors declared him dead . . . . . although his body was there (heart beating, lungs breathing), I felt HE (in a spiritual sense) wasn't . . . . .
At 25 weeks there is a long road ahead for this poor baby and her family. It is good that the mother was given steroids as that would help the infant's pulmonary status but it will still be touch and go for months. Regardless of when the infant left the womb a fetus still needs enough time to develop. Mother nature decided that it would be 40 weeks.
Of course the baby will live and be healthy and happy. She will have no memory of her birth or her mother save of course in the memories of her family and friends.
Deepest condolences to those who are hurting. Welcome to the world Aya.
Prey you are correct, but unfortunately "of course" does not make the future health and happines of this preemie a surety.
How sad. I could not imagine what it is going to be like to explain to this little girl (once she is old enough to understand) the circumstances of her birth.
I have worked in a neonatal ICU. What I learned from that experience is this:
Just because medical science figures out HOW to do something.....that does Not necessarily mean that they SHOULD do it!!
Delivering and practicing medicine on a 26 week old fetus just isn't a Good idea for Anyone involved!
I wouldn't wish that on my own child or anyone else's.
At 25 weeks, sadly, the child has a pretty rough road ahead, and the chances for serious permanent disabilities are as likely as not.
As a parent of 24-week triplets I have much sympathy for the surviving relatives. They may have to make difficult choices and make real sacrifices. One of my two survivors was 15.5 oz.
I also dislike stories like this as they are rarely followed up when things don't turn out well. For instance a few years ago the "smallest surviving baby" at 14.5 oz in Texas to parents from India. The child later died. My 14.7 oz daughter didn't survive long, but stories like these tend to create false optimism.
The parents faced with difficult situations deserve better than glib optimism.
The mother was so young. I hope the baby lives and becomes stronger each day. My condolences to the family.
