I Like ItI Don’t Like It

WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama made an unannounced visit Saturday night with his family to see the Lincoln Memorial, paying tribute to a former president he frequently invokes as an inspiration.

It was a day in which Obama played the role of tourist, seeing the most famous monuments in the nation's capital while experiencing the flavor of the city.

After riding in a motorcade from their temporary home at the Hay-Adams Hotel, Obama, his wife, Michelle, and daughters Malia and Sasha entered the grounds around the memorial shortly after 7 p.m. Bundled in coats in the near-40 degree weather, they walked up the dozens of steps in a close pack and into the memorial.

Once inside, Obama and his family had the opportunity to gaze at the nearly 20-foot statue of the 16th president and see the carved inscriptions of Abraham Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address and his Gettysburg Address on the walls.

After touring the memorial for about 20 minutes, including the lower part of the memorial that houses some exhibits, the Obamas walked out, facing the reflecting pool and Washington Monument. They waved to some onlookers standing around the memorial's lower steps.

Obama frequently invokes the memory of Lincoln. He announced he was running for president in Springfield, Ill., at the steps of the Old Capitol, where Lincoln was a legislator.

He even plans to use the same Bible at his inauguration that Lincoln used for his swearing in. Obama will be the first president since Lincoln to use that Bible, part of the collection of the Library of Congress.

On Inauguration Day, the luncheon that will be served in Congress's Statuary Hall to Obama, Vice President-elect Joe Biden and their families _ as well as congressional leaders, justices of the Supreme Court and pending members of Obama's Cabinet _ will include foods that Lincoln enjoyed.

Obama will be back at the Lincoln Memorial soon. He plans to trace the train route that Lincoln took and hold a welcome event at the Lincoln Memorial ahead of his Jan. 20 inauguration.

Though he's worked in Washington for about four years as a senator, Obama appeared to relish the sights of Washington on Saturday. Before arriving at the Lincoln Memorial, his motorcade drove on Constitution Avenue and then swerved around on a road right beside the Washington Monument. His family had the opportunity to get a full, close-up view of the monument for several minutes.

Earlier in the day, Obama dropped by for a bite to eat with Washington's mayor, Adrian Fenty, at Ben's Chili Bowl, the venerable diner in Washington's U Street district. Obama said it was his first time visiting Ben's Chili Bowl and "it was terrific."

After Obama's motorcade wandered through the U street district, passing the African-American Civil War Memorial and a flea market selling shirts that bear his face, he and Fenty surprised the restaurant around lunchtime.

He and Fenty ordered a house specialty, a Chili Half-Smoke _ a quarter-pound half pork and beef smoked sausage on a steamed bun with mustard, onions and chili sauce _ along with a big helping of some cheese fries.

I was at the Lincoln memorial last month, and I told him (the statue anyway!) about our new African-American president, and burst into some happy tears. What a time we live in!!!!

Michelle Obama looks a little tired and thin. I hope she gets some rest before Monday.

I am not seeing nearly enough Secret Service protection for this man and his family.
This is the week before the inauguration, and there are literally hundreds of thousands of whackjobs who are itching to get a shot at him, and the sight of him walking unprotected at the frontal angle within the range of a photographer's lens frightens me.
The Secret Service agents are hanging in the background, almost as if they already know something.
Please tell me that I am not being overly paranoid...I just don't want anything to happen to BHO or his lovely family.

Obama, please, no more Lincoln parallels. And don't plan on going to the theater anytime in the next 8 years.

It's starting to come off disingenuous and I really don't think he's trying to. Now it he comes out wearing a top hat and long coat on inauguration day.......that would really be scary.

Why is it coming off as disingenuous? I like to hear what people mean when they stay stuff like this. If he's in to Lincoln and you're sick of hearing and or reading about then it becomes disingenuous?

finally we get a POTUS that has some sense of history and criticize him?

after eight years of dumbing down the presidency, it's shocking to your senses that we actually have a person in the white house who is very intelligent.

The 3rd picture almost looks like Lincoln is carefully observing Obama walking down the stairs.

It's been a long time since I've felt so content. I'm old and retired with the perfect partner. Now I have a brilliant President who may just help us out of this abyss. Feels good. Now, if I could just marry him (my partner, not the Pres), it would be a perfect world. :)

I hope you will get your wish soon!

It is time people start to realise that marriage is all about support, care and love and not solely about procreation.
All the fuss about traditional marriages...pfff The traditional marriage lasts about 5 years. Time to let the gay people show us hetero-people what a real commitment is all about.

I always love seeing the protective looks of his detail. I'll gladly take a bullet for the Obama family.

It is so nice to wake up in the morning NOT feeling angry at something my president or my country did the day or night before. For the first time in 8 years, I wake up optimistic and proud. I hope he takes the girls to the Washington Monument and Jefferson Memorial as well. Washington is a beautiful city, especially at night.

To be honest, that won't last long. Obama will do stuff to piss you and everyone off from time to time.

It's one thing to be PO'd, another to be devastated. We don't expect BHO to please everyone all the time, but we do expect him to be competent, honest, and to consider the advice of many advisors and constituents.
