I Like ItI Don’t Like It

WASHINGTON — President-elect Barack Obama made an unannounced visit Saturday night with his family to see the Lincoln Memorial, paying tribute to a former president he frequently invokes as an inspiration.

It was a day in which Obama played the role of tourist, seeing the most famous monuments in the nation's capital while experiencing the flavor of the city.

After riding in a motorcade from their temporary home at the Hay-Adams Hotel, Obama, his wife, Michelle, and daughters Malia and Sasha entered the grounds around the memorial shortly after 7 p.m. Bundled in coats in the near-40 degree weather, they walked up the dozens of steps in a close pack and into the memorial.

Once inside, Obama and his family had the opportunity to gaze at the nearly 20-foot statue of the 16th president and see the carved inscriptions of Abraham Lincoln's Second Inaugural Address and his Gettysburg Address on the walls.

After touring the memorial for about 20 minutes, including the lower part of the memorial that houses some exhibits, the Obamas walked out, facing the reflecting pool and Washington Monument. They waved to some onlookers standing around the memorial's lower steps.

Obama frequently invokes the memory of Lincoln. He announced he was running for president in Springfield, Ill., at the steps of the Old Capitol, where Lincoln was a legislator.

He even plans to use the same Bible at his inauguration that Lincoln used for his swearing in. Obama will be the first president since Lincoln to use that Bible, part of the collection of the Library of Congress.

On Inauguration Day, the luncheon that will be served in Congress's Statuary Hall to Obama, Vice President-elect Joe Biden and their families _ as well as congressional leaders, justices of the Supreme Court and pending members of Obama's Cabinet _ will include foods that Lincoln enjoyed.

Obama will be back at the Lincoln Memorial soon. He plans to trace the train route that Lincoln took and hold a welcome event at the Lincoln Memorial ahead of his Jan. 20 inauguration.

Though he's worked in Washington for about four years as a senator, Obama appeared to relish the sights of Washington on Saturday. Before arriving at the Lincoln Memorial, his motorcade drove on Constitution Avenue and then swerved around on a road right beside the Washington Monument. His family had the opportunity to get a full, close-up view of the monument for several minutes.

Earlier in the day, Obama dropped by for a bite to eat with Washington's mayor, Adrian Fenty, at Ben's Chili Bowl, the venerable diner in Washington's U Street district. Obama said it was his first time visiting Ben's Chili Bowl and "it was terrific."

After Obama's motorcade wandered through the U street district, passing the African-American Civil War Memorial and a flea market selling shirts that bear his face, he and Fenty surprised the restaurant around lunchtime.

He and Fenty ordered a house specialty, a Chili Half-Smoke _ a quarter-pound half pork and beef smoked sausage on a steamed bun with mustard, onions and chili sauce _ along with a big helping of some cheese fries.

It's weird to see a President that doesn't make me either feel angry or embarassed. What is this weird squishy feeling...... It's like shame, but the opposite..... :-)

Pride?

Honor?

Esteem?

Dignity?

You mean we are going to have a President that actually appreciates political history and doesn't just use it for votes? You mean we are going to have a first family that actually does family things? All I gotta say is "it's about time!"

A man steeped in the history of this nation......re-awakening an interest in one of our greatest Presidents.

Bravo, P.E. Obama....

This is, by the way, the bicentennial year of Lincoln's birth, in 1809, and along with the activities to celebrate this event, Obama will also be re-dedicating the Lincoln Memorial this year!

Obama's family visiting brought back a good memory. On my first visit to DC, my future husband showed me the Lincoln Memorial. It was a Friday evening, after all the government workers had gone home and not many tourists were around. I was really moved by the inscription, the way the statue was lit brightly and the wonderful quiet. The only other memorial that moved me like that was the Vietnam Memorial but that was a different feeling.

I have never felt so proud to be an American. I feel like I am a part of something great. I get chills everytime I see Obama; he represents such hope. I wish his mother and grandfather were here to see how great he has become. His grandmother got to see his greatness--God bless her and God bless Obama and his family.

Actually Michelle spoke for me that time the press and Republicans all piled on her. I used to say during the last 8 years that I was proud to be a citizen of Oregon, of the United States not so much, but it's starting to come back.

I have said that same thing many times. I love my state, not so proud of my country over the last 8 years. I absolutely love my liberal little corner of the state here in Portland. It's open, accepting, and eclectic. Our motto here is "Keep Portland Weird"

I hope the girls have good memories. What a life they're going to have now.

I've avoided getting all gushy about the Obama's but have to say, it's so refreshing to see a real family in D.C.
Hopefully, whatever ails politicos there doesn't change the Obama family for the worse.

If you're ever in western MA you should visit the home of Daniel Chester French, the sculptor of the Lincoln statue. It's a very interesting and informative look into the artist's life and work.
Obama chose a wise man to emulate.

As I look at the pictures and read that Mr. Obama will be sworn in on the same bible That President Lincoln used, I was moved to tears reflecting on the life and times of Abraham Lincoln and the life of our new President. Those who do not make the historic connection and those who will not extend their best wishes for this family are cold in a way that no human being should be.

It must be surreal for Obama to look at that statue and realize that one day he to will be a part of American history. I hope and pray he'll be remembered as one of the "great ones", however with what he's taking on you have to wonder.

Agreed. Although I would argue that he has already made history in so many different ways.
