TOKYO — Sony will post a 100 billion yen ($1.1 billion) operating loss this fiscal year through March, its first since 1995, media reports said Tuesday.

The electronics giant has seen sales of its liquid crystal display screens and other products fall, and its bottom line has been hurt by the strong yen, which cuts profits on goods sold abroad, the Nikkei business newspaper and broadcaster NHK reported.

The losses are coming from the company's core electronics division, which has long been a steady source of profits, the reports said. The Nikkei said Sony's operating loss could balloon to as much as 200 billion yen ($2.2 billion).

A company spokeswoman declined to comment on the reports.

In October, the company revised its operating profit forecast to 200 billion, 57 percent lower than its earlier target of 470 billion yen.

Last month, Sony said it would implement major cost-cutting to ride out the current economic downturn, including slashing 4 percent of its work force, lowering spending and shutting plants.

Sony is particularly vulnerable to the strong yen, as about 80 percent of its sales come from overseas. The company had been counting on strong holiday sales in U.S. and Europe, but consumers have been spending less as the worldwide economy falters.

Other major Japanese exporters, such as Toyota and TDK, have also announced job cuts and spending cutbacks.

Sony's shares were down 8 percent at 2,020 yen in early market trade Tuesday. The benchmark Nikkei stock index was down 4.4 percent.

Maybe they could generate some sales if they didn't price everything so sky high. No wonder Xbox Live is outselling the PS3 hands down. For all the market freaks, this is a good lesson for you. It doesn't matter how good something is, if they want too much for it, they ain't gonna buy it. Simple as that. The Big Three automakers, Soney and the mortgage industry all found that out the very hard way. And I love seeing them all in trouble. Serves them right.

You might change your mind when you see the topic. In the past it hasn't been the most soothing topic around here. (And did I ever understate that.)

Ummm Yummy.

I hope Sony can market the root kits they installed on millions of computers across the world. It was enough to make me stop buying anything made by Sony.

Kind of leaves me with a warm fuzzy feeling. What goes around, comes around.

Unlike American corporations with heavy management structures, abject arrogance and overall cluelessness, Japanese companies like Sony and Toyota will survive this downturn and thrive during the ensuing uptick.

It's the leadership stupid.

OK IF THIS GUY AGREES WE SHOULD BE VERY AFRAID........

LONDON — Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said Tuesday the stimulus package being crafted by President-elect Barack Obama and Congress could provide a "significant boost" to the sinking economy. But he warned that such a recovery won't last unless other steps are taken to stabilize the shaky financial system.

Bernanke is far smarter than you'll ever be, Burl, and he's a respected economist.

When even conservatives like Bernanke support Obama's economic rescue plan, it's good for the country.

Therein lies the Conservative problem.

What is currently "good for the country" is "bad for the GOP" in that they have absolute need to have the next four years look even more disastrous than the previous eight.

It's part of the whole "Country First" meme.

Dubya's 'news conference' was indeed nothing short of an exercise in delusion, laughable excuse-making, and illustrative of a simpleton who lives in some alternate reality. The really tragic element is that for eight excruciating years he has had the power to create chaos and tragedy at home and abroad in many, many areas.
It would have been appropriate to play the theme from the "Twilight Zone" from the beginning to the end of that pathetic charade.

These guys aren't interested in profits. They just care about the stock price, so they fire people and cut cut cut (pocketing it all) until the company can't run anymore. But at least he stock price went up before theytanked as a company.

Sony hasn't tanked.

It just posted a big loss.

There's an enormous difference between the two.

So I guess 101 Billion in losses is considered a great success by bloodsuckers like you. Adults know how to run a business for profits. Spoiled second generation retrobates live off of credit, cuts, gambling, and the stock market. Whaa!!!!!!!

I don't think it's a matter of Sony's quality dropping. I think it's more a case where their competitors have closed the gap. They still make an outstanding product, in my view.

True. However, they have always been the Cadillac of electronics, IMO. Nice to have if you can afford it, but usually I couldn't. If I the means, though, I always tried to buy Sony (or at least Aiwa, which I believe was made by Sony).

Oh yeah, and I for one dont think the cost of Blue Ray, and having to yet again buy everything I like on another format is worth it, and am holding out for the next big thing to see if its going to a much better leap in technology and more affordable.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 08:52 AM on 01/13/2009

Some in the industry are beginning to question the "wisdom" of switching to the Blu Ray format.

The fact is, if they can't sell 'X" units within a certain time frame, everybody will lose - the manufacturers, the DVD production houses, the film industry...everybody.

With the economy sinking, both here and abroad...Blu Ray may end up on the back burner.

It also doesn't help that Sony has been producing garbage products since about 1995.
