TOKYO — Sony will post a 100 billion yen ($1.1 billion) operating loss this fiscal year through March, its first since 1995, media reports said Tuesday.

The electronics giant has seen sales of its liquid crystal display screens and other products fall, and its bottom line has been hurt by the strong yen, which cuts profits on goods sold abroad, the Nikkei business newspaper and broadcaster NHK reported.

The losses are coming from the company's core electronics division, which has long been a steady source of profits, the reports said. The Nikkei said Sony's operating loss could balloon to as much as 200 billion yen ($2.2 billion).

A company spokeswoman declined to comment on the reports.

In October, the company revised its operating profit forecast to 200 billion, 57 percent lower than its earlier target of 470 billion yen.

Last month, Sony said it would implement major cost-cutting to ride out the current economic downturn, including slashing 4 percent of its work force, lowering spending and shutting plants.

Sony is particularly vulnerable to the strong yen, as about 80 percent of its sales come from overseas. The company had been counting on strong holiday sales in U.S. and Europe, but consumers have been spending less as the worldwide economy falters.

Other major Japanese exporters, such as Toyota and TDK, have also announced job cuts and spending cutbacks.

Sony's shares were down 8 percent at 2,020 yen in early market trade Tuesday. The benchmark Nikkei stock index was down 4.4 percent.

Those prices are ner bottom for retail now, and are expected to stay fairly flat.

The best deals are at places like H H Gregg, BestBuy, and Sam'sClub.

Don't expect a big drop in price.

considering that up until about 10 years ago, if you bought sony you were buying the best, and they made a great , long lasting product that was backed with great service and warranty. Now, your rolling the dice when you buy a sony and they are no better than anyone else, if even that. They just cost more. I use to only buy sony, but after more than a couple really bad and expensive experiences with their products, I gave up. They went for the highest profit and the lower quality and service, and they lost. Now they are just another cheap brand on the shelves at wallmart.

We are, indeed, the biggest consumers. Good news for McDonalds.

This is a good indicator of just how much our consumer spending has waned - it has waned a lot.

Bernanke: More bank bailouts needed

NEW YORK,CNNMoney, 13 January 2009

"Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke said Tuesday that President-elect Barack Obama's proposed fiscal stimulus package could help the economy, but he added that additional bailouts of financial institutions may also be needed to bring about a sustained economic recovery...

"Bernanke suggested that more banks and financial firms are likely to need additional capital injections from the government, and that further guarantees of their debt could be necessary, in return for the federal government receiving further equity in the firms."

Economic downturn or not, Sony's loss all comes down to the failure of the PlayStation 3. The PlayStation was the company's cash cow, but their newest console has been hemorrhaging cash since the early stages of development (Sony's gaming division was $2 billion in the red in 2007, before the financial crisis). Technologically, the PS3 is the best gaming system on the market, but manufacturing costs are so high that Sony takes a big hit even selling it for $400, which is twice as much as the Wii and standard-definition Xbox 360 and $100 more than the basic HD-ready Xbox 360. The plan was to offset the deficit created by console sales with strong game sales, but that has failed to materialize; Sony does not have a particularly strong in-house development studio, while third-party developers have not been keen to release PS3-exclusive content (such as Rockstar's Grand Theft Auto IV, which was the first game in that series not to be initially released only on a PlayStation platform, and subsequently has had exclusive bonus content made available for the Xbox 360).

Sony also assumed a prolonged format war between Blu-Ray and HD DVD that would keep its own media players in high demand. But with the format war over and Blu-Ray players made by other companies retailing for under $150 this holiday season, buying a PS3 for its DVD qualities doesn't make much sense.

I agree with you on this. Also, Sony thought that the Nintendo Wii wouldn't win the current console battle. When it took off like wild fire they were left holding the bag. A very expensive bag.

It's amazing - when i was a kid, stores were open 5 or 6 days a week. Closed on Sundays and thy made plenty of profits. Today, all these companies are so greedy - nothing is enough.

Might the case be made that as a kid you were just less in tune with the news? I know that when I was a kid my parents did a pretty good job of making me think things were hunky dory when in fact interest rates were in the mid to high teens and companies were faltering all over the place. When my father was laid off...it was presented to us that he had decided to go into business for himself.

Think back to when you were a kid...was there a CNBC or a FBN to produce nothing but financial stories 24/7? Nope, I doubt it. Unless you are about 15 :-)

Is this another one of those business' that are "too big to fail"?

Maybe the United States Treasury should rescue them for Japan.

I'm quite sure that Sony will manage, and if they need a little help - Japan will take care of it. Just like Japan will take care of their auto-manufacturing base if needed.

True, when I bought my new HDTV last fall, I was deciding between a Sony and a Samsung. I ended up getting the Samsung because it had a better picture and it was less expensive.
