TOKYO — Sony will post a 100 billion yen ($1.1 billion) operating loss this fiscal year through March, its first since 1995, media reports said Tuesday.

The electronics giant has seen sales of its liquid crystal display screens and other products fall, and its bottom line has been hurt by the strong yen, which cuts profits on goods sold abroad, the Nikkei business newspaper and broadcaster NHK reported.

The losses are coming from the company's core electronics division, which has long been a steady source of profits, the reports said. The Nikkei said Sony's operating loss could balloon to as much as 200 billion yen ($2.2 billion).

A company spokeswoman declined to comment on the reports.

In October, the company revised its operating profit forecast to 200 billion, 57 percent lower than its earlier target of 470 billion yen.

Last month, Sony said it would implement major cost-cutting to ride out the current economic downturn, including slashing 4 percent of its work force, lowering spending and shutting plants.

Sony is particularly vulnerable to the strong yen, as about 80 percent of its sales come from overseas. The company had been counting on strong holiday sales in U.S. and Europe, but consumers have been spending less as the worldwide economy falters.

Other major Japanese exporters, such as Toyota and TDK, have also announced job cuts and spending cutbacks.

Sony's shares were down 8 percent at 2,020 yen in early market trade Tuesday. The benchmark Nikkei stock index was down 4.4 percent.

Wow, considering that I work for Sony, this is not the best way to wake up in the morning.
FYI, they are a very nice company. They treat their employees extremely well. It's the best work environment I've ever worked in. Great benefits, friendly people, relaxed. I would be very sorry to lose my job.

SONY had a great business model until they started following the American REACTIONARY party "ownership society" scam.

I liked SONY's. I had two Vaio's. One was stolen and my wife uses the other one still. They are great comps.

I now have an HP that I spent $800, less for and I am just as happy.

Yes, God forbid that people be able to "own" anything. That means a person would have to be "responsible" for it. We can't have that. The American public is too stupid to be able to handle responsibility. We need the government to control it all so we can all be equally miserable.

Nitwit.

I got some things to do. Will be back in a few hours. last posting for now:

O/T: CNN International is just poking fun at yesterday's last Bush Press-conference.

Boy: When was the last US-president officially ridiculed in the public like that?

Seeya!

Question is when will the next US pres be so roundly ridiculed in public, and the answer is about 1 year from now.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:50 AM on 01/13/2009

You must be like 12 or something, right? Maybe you should look at how the presidents (oh, say the last five or six) before this guy were treated. Ford got crap from SNL, Carter wasn't all that respected, but the current takes the cake, by far. And, the next guy (you know, the smart and responsible one?) we won't have to worry about this kind of ridicule.

I don't either. I remember when they included root kits on their music CD's. These root kits allowed Sony to spy on everyone that used a computer to play a Sony CD. In addition, these flawed root kits gave hackers entry to infected PC's. I often wonder what unknown monitoring software/methods may be embedded in Sony hardware. For this reason, I do not trust Sony and I will never buy anything made by Sony.

Australia offers 'best job in world' on paradise island

SYDNEY (AFP) – An Australian state is offering internationally what it calls "the best job in the world" -- earning a top salary for lazing around a beautiful tropical island for six months.

The job pays 150,000 Australian dollars (105,000 US dollars) and includes free airfares from the winner's home country to Hamilton Island on the Great Barrier Reef, Queensland's state government announced on Tuesday.

In return, the "island caretaker" will be expected to stroll the white sands, snorkel the reef, take care of "a few minor tasks" -- and report to a global audience via weekly blogs, photo diaries and video updates.

I know some people are wallowing in the decline of SONY and maybe the Japanese economy as well but we may be head for a lost decade of deflation just like Japan was in the '90s. But even then the Japanese had an advantage over the US because much of their debt was handled with domestic loans where we are outsourcing our debt to China.

Gee, wonder why.

Sucky U.S. economy + overpriced electronics + PS3 (which is a topic in of itself) + increased overall competition....

Hmmm....wonder if Sony can do the math. Probably not.

PS2 is still the best release ever compared to all gaming consoles... Tekken 5 is an awesome game!

Yo!

But why does it have to be the PS3, anyway?

The PS2 is still a hallmark in videogames. You can purchase a brand-new set for 50 Euros over the counter in Germany actually, while a huge number of some of the best video-games ever can be bought at 20 Euros each.

Hey! Saving money can be fun!

Yes, we have a PS2. The gameplayer in the house loves it. I just bought him a MMORPG for his computer and now he is ad.dicted to that.

I can't stomach paying the horri.ble prices for game consoles every few years.

My PS2, that I bought used years ago, just finally bit the dust. I ordered a new one from Amazon. You're right about the PS3. I would love to get one, mainly because of the hard drive, but it's just too expensive and I haven't been tempted by the games for it. Why didn't they just make it an affordable kick-@ss gaming machine and leave the Hi-def, Blu-Ray and the rest of the bells and whistles for a high-end model? I don't want or need any of that and would jump at it for around $200.00.
