TOKYO — Sony will post a 100 billion yen ($1.1 billion) operating loss this fiscal year through March, its first since 1995, media reports said Tuesday.

The electronics giant has seen sales of its liquid crystal display screens and other products fall, and its bottom line has been hurt by the strong yen, which cuts profits on goods sold abroad, the Nikkei business newspaper and broadcaster NHK reported.

The losses are coming from the company's core electronics division, which has long been a steady source of profits, the reports said. The Nikkei said Sony's operating loss could balloon to as much as 200 billion yen ($2.2 billion).

A company spokeswoman declined to comment on the reports.

In October, the company revised its operating profit forecast to 200 billion, 57 percent lower than its earlier target of 470 billion yen.

Last month, Sony said it would implement major cost-cutting to ride out the current economic downturn, including slashing 4 percent of its work force, lowering spending and shutting plants.

Sony is particularly vulnerable to the strong yen, as about 80 percent of its sales come from overseas. The company had been counting on strong holiday sales in U.S. and Europe, but consumers have been spending less as the worldwide economy falters.

Other major Japanese exporters, such as Toyota and TDK, have also announced job cuts and spending cutbacks.

Sony's shares were down 8 percent at 2,020 yen in early market trade Tuesday. The benchmark Nikkei stock index was down 4.4 percent.

If that's the case then exports and real estate are a good place to invest.

...and if we started putting some tariffs on their goods, like we should, they would be hurting more. I'm afraid this recession/depression is gonna be a big time reality check. And on the other side of it, Americans will have to wake up and realize that not everyone can be rich, but if our leaders could get off the corporate payrolls, we could have a world where everyone was working and had decent lives

I think the goal of most people is to live a fairly comfortable life, not necessarily to get rich.

There was a time when most of the people in this country did lead fairly comfortable lives, back in the good old days when there was a middle class.

Globalization is good because goods become cheaper, benefiting the customer.

That is all that matters.

Tariffs? On Japan? No way. You're forgetting that Japan is one of our closest allies, that they are dominating in spite of the yen's strength, that we send them our own share of iPods, Starbucks, Windows XP, etc., that there are much greater consequences in a global economy. If Japanese companies are winning because they're offering better products at prices we're willing to pay, we shouldn't penalize them for their success.

America's great success over the last half-century has been transforming the world into a giant, integrated economy. As a result, we must now face the consequences of increased and serious competition. Tariffs would not make our companies more competitive globally. There's your reality check.

Now China, on the other hand. . .

WHile SOny does build products outside of the U>S. a lot is built or assembled within the U.S. or in special economic zones and thus would avoid the tariffs.

I wonder how much of this is the fault of PS3. I know that they were amazingly arrogant when they launched it just assuming no matter the lack of games or insane price they'd stay number 1. Instead they found the system lagging behing X-Box and the Wii.

Sony signed an $85 million contract with Janet Jackson. Other musicians and actors starve while these companies try to force us to consume the works of a few artists so the companies can control distribution and profitability.
No sympathy.

It took them nine years to recover from the last recession, interest rate went to zero, like our fed rate. Right now the Yen and the Dollar are the safe currencies.

Okay, this is totally off topic, but I found it amusing.

I am watching the local news here and the weather lady, (a beautiful blonde, aren't they all?). Anyway she was in front of her green screen showing the weather and she turned around so you could see the back of her hair. The hair was messed up like she had just got done having her head banged against a headboard.

Next time she should give herself a little more time. Or find someone that is a little quicker.

heh

I read a story last week on Yahoo about PSP sales dropping ~40% and that Nintendo DS sales have been on the rise. The writer then criticized the PSP for lack of a touchscreen and non ITouch features. Gist of the article said that it probably wouldn't be around too much longer.

Apple Computer is one of the few profitable technology firms around this year. Sony spent a great deal fight.ing out the Blu-Ray battle for the Hi Def market. This doesn't surprise me at all and things can go down hill from here for Hi-Tech until consumer confidence is restored.

At last we will have a president sensitive to the economic needs of the average citizen.
