TOKYO — Sony will post a 100 billion yen ($1.1 billion) operating loss this fiscal year through March, its first since 1995, media reports said Tuesday.

The electronics giant has seen sales of its liquid crystal display screens and other products fall, and its bottom line has been hurt by the strong yen, which cuts profits on goods sold abroad, the Nikkei business newspaper and broadcaster NHK reported.

The losses are coming from the company's core electronics division, which has long been a steady source of profits, the reports said. The Nikkei said Sony's operating loss could balloon to as much as 200 billion yen ($2.2 billion).

A company spokeswoman declined to comment on the reports.

In October, the company revised its operating profit forecast to 200 billion, 57 percent lower than its earlier target of 470 billion yen.

Last month, Sony said it would implement major cost-cutting to ride out the current economic downturn, including slashing 4 percent of its work force, lowering spending and shutting plants.

Sony is particularly vulnerable to the strong yen, as about 80 percent of its sales come from overseas. The company had been counting on strong holiday sales in U.S. and Europe, but consumers have been spending less as the worldwide economy falters.

Other major Japanese exporters, such as Toyota and TDK, have also announced job cuts and spending cutbacks.

Sony's shares were down 8 percent at 2,020 yen in early market trade Tuesday. The benchmark Nikkei stock index was down 4.4 percent.

SAVE AMERICA
WE MUST CHANGE,
YES WE CAN!
We are the citizens of
“Main Street” and we must insist
To our President Obama,
Please keep us on his list.
America is in crisis with job losses so many
All those big box retailers that want every penny.
American made has gone astray,
And businesses seem to have lost their way.
We must change yes we can.
As we reach out together as a grassroots we move,
We must rely on each other for a successful improve.
Please manufacturers you’ve moved far away,
Return to your home and show us the American way.
Come Produce your goods and gainfully employ
Be true to your country as we pave a new way.
We must change yes we can.
With our strengths in great numbers as we unite,
Having goals of success we will be all right.
As we make every effort with a vision of change,
We will preserve this great nation for the long-range.
We pledge to this nation to be faithful and true,
And honor our country with the red white and blue.
We must change yes we can.
As we unite together and we reach out to all
From shore to shore we can never again fall.
With a great leader and a great team,
please lead us together unto the American dream.
We can do this yes we can,
This is America!

Wow reading these comments it is amazing so many people are still in denial about this being just a symptom of the whole economy going into the dumper, and trying to pretend it has to do with tech-geek design and pricing trivia.

THOMAS JEFFERSON SAID:
"If the American people ever allow private banks to control the issue of their currency, first by inflation
then by deflation [depression], the banks and the corporations will grow up around them, will deprive the people of all property until their children wake up homeless on the continent their fathers conquered. The issuing power should be taken from the banks and restored to the people, to whom it properly belongs."

Here there's much more Jefferson said to us....

Remember Jefferson also said: "Ours is not a system based upon trust, but one of suspicion..!"

Jefferson on economy and economics monetary policy...

He also said "The spirit of resistance to government is so valuable on certain occasions, that I wish it always to be kept alive".

Geez. . . . it's never a big story when a company makes a profit (unless, of course, it's an oil company). Why such a big deal when they lose a little money?

The overtone of this headline is supposed to play into the whole "The economy sucks" broken record (yeah I know, it does). But isn't Sony's loss caused by the PS3 costing a fortune to make and the fact that nobody wants to buy a Blu-ray player?

Is it any wonder? Sony's products have no price advantage (PS3 especially), no ease-of-use advantage, restrictive compatibility issues (Memory Stick, ATRAC, Bravia Home Link), 20th century content distribution, uneven design (often behind Apple or Samsung), and some products that are just cruddy (Cybershot).

I have some SONY equipment. The reason I won't stay with SONY anymore is because they keep changing their designs and there is no support for repair. Their stuff is way too highly overpriced too.

WAY too much.

SONY is not a good word here. Lack of support for repair is the "biggie" especially when you have only had the item just over 90 days.

Store won't take returns and getting ANY support from SONY might as well be non-existent.
