TOKYO — Sony will post a 100 billion yen ($1.1 billion) operating loss this fiscal year through March, its first since 1995, media reports said Tuesday.

The electronics giant has seen sales of its liquid crystal display screens and other products fall, and its bottom line has been hurt by the strong yen, which cuts profits on goods sold abroad, the Nikkei business newspaper and broadcaster NHK reported.

The losses are coming from the company's core electronics division, which has long been a steady source of profits, the reports said. The Nikkei said Sony's operating loss could balloon to as much as 200 billion yen ($2.2 billion).

A company spokeswoman declined to comment on the reports.

In October, the company revised its operating profit forecast to 200 billion, 57 percent lower than its earlier target of 470 billion yen.

Last month, Sony said it would implement major cost-cutting to ride out the current economic downturn, including slashing 4 percent of its work force, lowering spending and shutting plants.

Sony is particularly vulnerable to the strong yen, as about 80 percent of its sales come from overseas. The company had been counting on strong holiday sales in U.S. and Europe, but consumers have been spending less as the worldwide economy falters.

Other major Japanese exporters, such as Toyota and TDK, have also announced job cuts and spending cutbacks.

Sony's shares were down 8 percent at 2,020 yen in early market trade Tuesday. The benchmark Nikkei stock index was down 4.4 percent.

Yea, about 1993 I went through two Diskman units in one year; one failed just before the 90 day warranty ran out, and one just after, so the second one was not replaced. There units were NOT used much, either. I then bought a Toshiba one, it still works, and it has had way more use than the other units could ever have had.

I agree that about 15-20 years ago, around the time the original founder/chairman died, their manufacturing quality went to crap. Except for the CRT TVs, of which I think they cared a little bit about (their bread and butter). I know they had a lot of problems with reliability of flat screen TVs when they first started making them.

Sony just is too big, into too many things to be effective anymore. They need to spin off the entertainment part and just go with electronics. They, just like CBS before them, think its just so sexy to be an entertainment company. Look where that led them/us. I'd say entertainment quality has declined since the buyouts of the 1980s. Especially news media.

Most Sony products are presently made in China, no longer Japan. So if they cannot stay on top of things what is the answer? You just cant get any cheaper labor than China!!! Also the electronics giant cannot expect sales to maintain if the economy cant. How many laptops, tvs, ipods can each family purchase and how often? Sooner or later they must run out of consumers

It's the yen. Not terribly surprising that Sony would get hammered as well. Though unlike other Japanese industries, I wonder if this bodes for a long term trend at Sony even once the economic situation brightens.

Perhaps now they'll consider lowering their price points on much of their consumer electronics line-up. Sony set a high bar for mass produced consumer electronics that allowed them to price higher than their competitors. Now of course several other companies have caught or surpassed Sony in terms of quality and brand recognition. I think perhaps their brand name alone no longer warrants the premium pricing they've enjoyed for the past couple of decades. When you no longer own the market it's time to get more competitive.

they are selling on their names now as most sony products are made in china today!
just like the red wing shoe brand, no longer homegrown!! made in china. some are still assembled here and few are made here but VERY FEW!! they are selling on name recognition only.

This collapse is taking down otherwise sound businesses, to construe it as some sort of "free market" winnowing out of the poor business management is false.

The poor business management was the Wall Street investment bankers, which the American taxpayer is in the process of bailing out to the tune of TRILLIONS.

Knock $100 off the PS3 and I'll buy it. Until then, we'll just keep enjoying our affordable Wii.

My son's friends all love theirs too (much better than my son's XBox that just got the 3 Red Rings of D.eath). We loved our PS1 and PS2, but when they priced the PS3 so high, it was economically smarter for us as a family to get the Wii and spend the difference on more games.

I found cheaper deals. Got my kid one for Christmas. Dell was offering great coupons for the season, and sometimes you can find them brand new on e-bay cheaper (plus they were giving a coupon at Christmas), so no sales tax + coupon meant great deal.

He allowed me to sell off all his xbox360 stuff in exchange as well, which helped a lot. We had a very light year.

sony blows, all these lame companies need to tank... it's over for so many, better earth friendly technology is here if new world order mobs allow it to masses, but it can't be stopped. advertising is total waste on young aware people, nobody my age cares about all this crap let it all crumble. its for fat baby boomers.

Maybe if Sony would have lowered the priceof the PS3 they would have made a profit. People bought Wii's and XBoxes instead. This may not have been the only reason, but I am sure it helped contibute to their losses.

The PS3 isn't anywhere near as versatile as the other two.
They should have re-tooled it a long time ago.
