quite ironic that this lottery was set up so that a portion of the winnings go to charity, in this case a charity that helps r a p e victims.

and the person who attacked him is probably just the type of person that likes a fight and/or thinks that it makes him a hero.

Here's a question: If the man had been convicted in 1993 for molesting 2 girls under the age of 13, ultimately serving 4 years in prison for his crime, why on earth would someone allow him to babysit his/her little daughter in 2000, enabling him to repeat the crime? Didn't they know that pedophiles cannot be "cured" by a simple sentence of incarceration? Perhaps that parent should be brought up on charges of child neglect -- or perhaps of stupidity, at the very least.

Good point but don't forget the perp is ultimately to blame not the victim.

I wonder if those who advocate vigilantly justice are the same ones who refuse to serve on juries?

Maybe.

Not fate.

Just a loser who thinks justice is his to mete out.

A Christian, I'm sure.

Why do you say the attacker was a Christian? There are liberal Christians and conservative Christians. There's no need for religious hate.

Fate was just putting things back in order.

what happened to this guy is kind of like what we did to iraq.

They paid their dues, complied with the UN etc. but since they are run by a very bad guy and they will probably do something bad in the future, let's preemptively attack them.

So do we also take away the winnings of anyone who has ever spanked a child or hit a dog?

Chance is what determines the winner, not the reactionary and subjective morality of people who did not win.

Sometimes good things happen to bad people and bad things happen to good people. This guy was donating about 28% of his winnings to Standing Together Against Rape. It sounds like he was still trying to atone for wrongs he had already served time for.

Sure, you can say "what else did this guy do that we don't know about". Well, the fact is you DON'T know. Punishment for things that *might* have been done? Heck, what's to prevent me from assuming that Joe Blow walking down the street is guilty for something and that I'm now justified in braining him (or her).

Hell, I killed a bird with a rock once. Does that disqualify me from ever winning anything?

who's taking away his winnings?

the victims might file a civil suit which they are totally entitled to, and if they win, then it's because they're lawfully entitled to it.

I don't condone violence like this, but I must comment on those who defend the sex offender. He did his time... he paid for his crime... forgive and forget....
First, most don't get the full sentence. There's so much negotiating beforehand that more often than not the crimes are reduced or tossed out.
Second, they don't rehabilitate. Most will reoffend if they have the chance.
Third, spending a little time in jail or paying a fine is a drop in the bucket compared to the trauma of the crime, the trauma of the investigation, the trauma of being grilled and humiliated in court and living with the emotional scars. I have yet to see a case where the offender even paid for all the medical bills and counseling of his victims, let alone any kind of restitution.

Do they deserve to be beaten like this, maybe not. But do they deserve our sympathy? Not in the least!

Remarking that someone is out of prison because he has done his time is NOT defending him and, regardless of what he has done, there is nothing good or moral about somebody else beating him with a pipe. Both guys are sickos.

I never said there was anything good or moral about beating him, or anyone else. And saying he's done his time doesn't necessarily reflect whether or not he's paid his debt to society or proven himself not to be a threat. Yeah, he's a sicko, and so's the guy who beat him up.

Then life in proson for jaywalkers Or capital punishment. The state decides your debt. You pay it. That should be that.

"First, most don't get the full sentence. There's so much negotiating beforehand that more often than not the crimes are reduced or tossed out."

Irrelevant. It's the job of the prosecutor to make such decisions and the offender has NO control over what the prosecutor offers. Want to change that, talk to your legislator.

"Second, they don't rehabilitate. Most will reoffend if they have the chance."

Most will. NOT all. Have a crystal ball, do you? Does it work so well that you can safely b e a t people who have done nothing up to that point but pay the debt the state said they owed? Yeah, if they'll reoffend it's ok to b e a t them? E n d them too, maybe?

"But do they deserve our sympathy? Not in the least!"

They certainly don't deserve sympathy for what they've done in the past but they do when they are b e a t e n with a pipe for no reason...which is exactly what happened.

Irrelevant? In our case, there were 11 children. 9 charges were dropped and the other two reduced. He spent 25 days in jail. Would you think justice was served and he paid his debt to humanity? He came out acting like he was the victim while the state turned its back on nearly a dozen children and their families. Sympathy?

And I'm not suggesting anyone be at them. That's not what I said.

See, people? You wouldn't read about something like this happening in Connecticut or Maryland (WOOSIES!!). When you play the game, don't complain when the other contestants take their turn.

What is it with the people defending this p.o.s.? He's served his time? Wooptie friggen do. These are just the girls he was caught molesting. You people are the sick ones to think he's the victim here. This is the problem we have in this country. The abuser goes on and the victim suffer their whole lives.

You have a reading comprehension problem. NOBODY is defending the SO.
YOU are defending the VIOLENT p.o.s. that hit somebody with a pipe.

Now is the time for the victims to sue him for his 500k not beat him to death. Let his time of having money be a short one. The courts and senseable way is always right.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:12 AM on 01/14/2009

Sue him for what? For Christ's sake, he already served his time and he won this lottery fairly. What right does anyone have to sue him?

Civil court. The court can freeze his winnings for an unlawfull act, past or present.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:49 PM on 01/14/2009

He was concicted in criminal court. Civil court awards damages to the victims.
There will be thousands upon thousands of dollars worth of therapy that each of these child victims or us the taxpayers will have to come up with.
I say that the perp should be the one to cover it, not the victims or us.

"Let his time of having money be a short one."

Do you live in some other country? Here in the USA, court cases do not move quickly at all. He could just spend it all. They should move on. He went to prison.

Ironic. He probably became a sex offender to act out violence he himself experienced while still a child. So, hit him with a pipe to remind him of the beating. Great. He'll probably become a Supervillan now.

You know if citizens of this sort put their collective energies as vigilantes into more productive uses, as resposible electorates, than we wouldn't have the real criminals running the streets: Government representatives.

But I guess these type of insecurities breed such thugs.
