NEW YORK — Jennifer Hudson is using pop culture's grandest stage _ the Super Bowl _ to make her return to the spotlight following the slayings of her mother, brother and 7-year-old nephew.

NFL spokesman Brian McCarthy confirmed Wednesday that Hudson will sing the national anthem at the Super Bowl in Tampa, Fla., on Feb. 1. E! News first reported Tuesday that Hudson would perform.

Hudson hasn't made a public appearance since her 57-year-old mother, Darnell Hudson Donerson; 29-year-old brother Jason Hudson; and 7-year-old nephew Julian King were slain in Chicago in October. Her estranged brother-in-law has been charged in the killings.

Hudson, who had released her self-titled debut album shortly before the killings, is also scheduled to sing at the Grammys' MusiCares event in Los Angeles a few days later. She is nominated for four awards at the Feb. 8 Grammy Awards.

The 27-year-old Hudson already has an Oscar to her credit, a best supporting actress win for her role in "Dreamgirls." The former "American Idol" contestant's career was continuing its skyrocketing rise, with featured roles in movies like "Sex and the City" and "The Secret Life of Bees," as well as her album release, when the slayings occurred.

The Super Bowl is the most viewed spectacle on television. Bruce Springsteen is scheduled to sing during halftime of the pro football championship game.

She's had a very tough year, so I hate to say this, but I don't see what is so great with JH. Her acting is terrible--in Dreamgirls she was a stereotype and in Sex and the City she was just awful. While she is a talented singer, her music is too generic. It sounds like a hundred other people who do the gospel/sould sound better. Maybe i'm just too biased against American Idol. This is obviously just a critique of her as a performer, as a person, well, i doubt that I would have been able to endure what she endured this yera.

She can sing. It's real and it's good.

If you have to preface your statement with 'I hate to say this, but' DON'T SAY IT! Loser.

Jealousy will get you nowhere in life.

You hate the say it, but did anyway. lol. Many people disagree with you regarding JH's acting and music. It's fine that you don't like her, I don't know why you felt the need to state it here though, in this thread... after the girl has gone through what she has.

No, this is not a critique of her. This is your own self-expressed shame of black people mixed in with a misunderstanding of the music industry's attempts to homogenize every singer today and make them sound more like "pop music" than real "R&B". The role in "Dreamgirls" while although stereotypical is very true and real. It came from a play written during a time when blacks weren't afraid to be themselves on stage like they are today. And Sex and the City was just paying the bills and getting her mainstream face time.
